Konami turned Pro Evolution Soccer into eFootball, a free download that updates in place rather than shipping a new release every autumn. Dream Team is the centre of it: you sign current players and legends with GP or eFootball Coins, then climb the divisions of the eFootball League. Weekly Live Updates rewrite ratings from real world results, so form on the pitch feeds straight into your squad.
Combat in eFootball rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Playing Styles per position
Each player carries one Playing Style that drives his off ball movement, such as Goal Poacher sitting on the last defender's shoulder or Anchor Man refusing to leave the space in front of the back four. Styles are locked to compatible positions, so a Cross Specialist only functions on a wide man.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Team Playstyles in Game Plan
Five Team Playstyles sit under Game Plan and Tactics: Possession Game, Quick Counter, Long Ball Counter, Out Wide and Long Ball. Each one rewrites squad behaviour across attack, defence and both transitions.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Player Skills
More than forty skills split across Shooting, Passing, Dribbling, Defending, Goalkeeping and Other. Captaincy cuts squad fatigue, Super-Sub raises a player's ability once he comes on in the second half, and Fighting Spirit protects kicking and heading accuracy under pressure.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Dream Team squad building
You start from a base club or national side, then sign players and managers with GP earned in game or with purchased eFootball Coins. The manager you pick determines the formation and the tactical instructions the squad can actually run.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Live Update ratings
Real world results and transfers feed into player ratings every week. A striker in scoring form arrives with a boost that can outweigh a higher base rated card sitting on your bench.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Playing Styles per position + Team Playstyles in Game Plan
Each player carries one Playing Style that drives his off ball movement, such as Goal Poacher sitting on the last defender's shoulder or Anchor Man refusing to leave the space in front of the back four. When combined with Team Playstyles in Game Plan, five team playstyles sit under game plan and tactics: possession game, quick counter, long ball counter, out wide and long ball. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Player Skills + Dream Team squad building
More than forty skills split across Shooting, Passing, Dribbling, Defending, Goalkeeping and Other. Paired with Dream Team squad building, you start from a base club or national side, then sign players and managers with gp earned in game or with purchased efootball coins. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Live Update ratings as a Multiplier
Real world results and transfers feed into player ratings every week. A striker in scoring form arrives with a boost that can outweigh a higher base rated card sitting on your bench. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Live Update ratings optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your role's stat priorities
- Exploit Playing Styles per position for maximum damage windows
- Chain Team Playstyles in Game Plan and Player Skills for combo damage
- Use Dream Team squad building to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Choose your manager before you spend GP on players. The manager sets the formation and the instructions your squad can run, and a set of expensive signings in the wrong shape performs worse than cheaper players in the right one.
- Position using Playing Styles per position to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Team Playstyles in Game Plan: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Dream Team but will get you killed in Friend Match.
