FromSoftware released Nightreign on 30 May 2025 as a three player roguelike built on Elden Ring's combat. Every expedition drops a squad into Limveld for three in-game days, with the layout of camps, churches and forts reshuffled each run. Day three always ends against one of eight Nightlords, and losing wipes the entire loadout you spent the run assembling.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

Three day expedition loop

Days one and two each finish with a Night Boss, and the third night is the Nightlord fight the whole run has been building toward. Runes, weapons and passives all reset afterwards, so the run is judged on how strong you were at the final gate.

Night's Tide closing ring

Rain sweeps in twice per day and squeezes the squad into a shrinking circle, draining health if you linger outside it. Route planning is a real skill here because the ring decides which points of interest you can still bank before the boss.

Rune levelling at Sites of Grace

Any Site of Grace converts runes into levels, capped at 15, which needs 513,336 runes across the run. There is no stat allocation; each Nightfarer climbs a fixed curve, so level number alone tells you their power.

Relics and Relic Rites

Relics slot into colour coded sockets on a Nightfarer and are the only progression that survives between runs. Rune acquisition relics are the standard opening pick because two of them make level 15 realistic on a clean expedition.

Shifting Earth events

Four events rewrite chunks of Limveld: The Crater, The Mountaintop, Rotted Woods and Noklateo. Clearing one grants a lasting blessing, such as frostbite resistance from The Mountaintop or a weapon upgraded to Legendary from The Crater.

Equipment Guide

EquipmentWhy It MattersBest For
Rivers of BloodA katana carrying the Corpse Piler skill, which fires arcs of blood that stack bleed fast on large targets.Nightlords with large hitboxes where bleed procs land repeatedly, especially Gladius and Adel.
MoonveilA katana with Transient Moonlight, a sheathed slash that throws a magic wave for chip damage at range.Hybrid casters who want a melee option that still benefits from their intelligence scaling.
Bloodhound's FangA curved greatsword with a mobile leaping skill that covers ground and dodges in the same animation.Wylder and Raider players who want damage without giving up mobility.
Dark Moon GreatswordA greatsword whose charged attacks throw frost projectiles, letting you pressure a boss from mid range.Intelligence builds fighting bosses that punish melee uptime with sweeping attacks.
Black BowA light bow that fires from a crouched stance with faster draw speed than the heavier bows.Ironeye and anyone tagging Evergaol bosses or breaking distant weak points.

Rivers of Blood: A katana carrying the Corpse Piler skill, which fires arcs of blood that stack bleed fast on large targets. It drops from chests, small enemies, bosses and merchants, so it is a lucky find rather than a plan.

Moonveil: A katana with Transient Moonlight, a sheathed slash that throws a magic wave for chip damage at range. Magic scaling makes it the natural bridge weapon for Recluse and other intelligence users.

Bloodhound's Fang: A curved greatsword with a mobile leaping skill that covers ground and dodges in the same animation. It hits hard enough for day two bosses while keeping you out of counter windows.

Dark Moon Greatsword: A greatsword whose charged attacks throw frost projectiles, letting you pressure a boss from mid range. Frost buildup rewards squads that already have a frontline holding aggro.

Black Bow: A light bow that fires from a crouched stance with faster draw speed than the heavier bows. It is the ranged workhorse for chipping down field bosses before the squad commits to melee.

Location Progression

LocationLevel RangeKey Rewards
Roundtable HoldBetween runsRelic loadouts, Nightlord selection, Shifting Earth rotation
The CraterDay 1 to Day 3Legendary weapon upgrade, fire resistance gear
The MountaintopDay 1 to Day 3Frostbite resistance blessing
Rotted WoodsDay 1 to Day 3Health and rot resistance blessing
Noklateo, the Shrouded CityDay 2 to Day 3Weapon duplication, self revival power

Roundtable Hold: The hub between expeditions where you equip Relics, pick your Nightfarer and select which Nightlord to hunt. Sleeping in the bed here advances time and rotates out an active Shifting Earth event.

The Crater: A volcanic gash that overwrites the northern half of Limveld and packs the area with fire enemies. Clearing it lets you promote a weapon all the way to Legendary rarity.

The Mountaintop: A frozen peak that replaces terrain with frostbite hazards and cold weather enemies. The blessing you earn from clearing it makes frostbite far less punishing on later Nightlords.

Rotted Woods: A Scarlet Rot forest that takes over the bottom right corner of the map. Working through it grants a blessing that raises health, improves recovery and blunts rot buildup.

Noklateo, the Shrouded City: A dense enemy filled city that is the last Shifting Earth event to unlock. Its rewards let you duplicate a weapon and gain a power that revives you after a fatal hit.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Look up your target Nightlord's weakness before you queue. Gladius and Adel take extra damage from poison, Gnoster and Caligo from fire, Maris and Fulghor from lightning, Libra from madness and Heolstor from holy. Picking a matching weapon on the first church visit saves ten minutes of hunting.
  2. Two rune acquisition relics is the community standard opener because level 15 needs 513,336 runes and a squad without rune bonuses rarely clears level 12. Damage relics only matter if you actually reach the levels that make them worth slotting.
  3. Reviving a downed ally means hitting them with your weapon, and heavier weapons fill the revive bar faster per swing. Do not stand around waiting; two people swinging revives roughly twice as fast as one.
  4. Churches upgrade your Flask of Crimson Tears charges, and those upgrades compound across the run. A squad that skips churches on day one shows up to the Nightlord with half the healing of a squad that did not.
  5. The Night's Tide ring gives enough warning to reach one more point of interest if you commit immediately. Hesitating for five seconds usually means you arrive with rain damage already ticking and no time to loot.
  6. Field bosses and Evergaols hand out passive buffs and weapons well above their difficulty, but they cost time. Take them only when the squad is together, because a solo attempt that fails costs the run more than the buff was worth.
  7. Weapons in Nightreign have no stat requirements, so every Nightfarer can equip anything. What limits you is the level gate on higher rarity gear, which is another reason rune income drives everything else.
  8. Split up for the first two minutes of day one to bank three separate camps, then regroup. Solo clearing early trash is safe and triples early rune income compared to a squad moving as one blob.
  9. Sorcerer's Rises reward map knowledge rather than combat and often carry a Legendary weapon. If one is inside the first ring, it is almost always worth a detour before enemies scale up.
  10. Clearing a Shifting Earth event permanently changes what your squad can survive later. Rotted Woods in particular pays for itself against Nightlords that apply status, because the health and recovery blessing carries through the fight.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring the Nightlord's elemental weakness and brute forcing the fight with whatever dropped first.
  • Chasing Evergaol bosses on day one and arriving at the Night Boss underlevelled.
  • Skipping churches, then running dry on flask charges during the third night.
  • Staying together for every fight instead of splitting to farm runes faster on day one.
  • Hoarding an Ultimate Art for a perfect moment that never comes instead of using it on cooldown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you play Nightreign solo?

Yes, and FromSoftware added a solo balance pass after launch that reduces boss health for one player runs. Two player matchmaking was also added, though the game is tuned around a squad of three.

What is the max level in an expedition?

Level 15, which requires 513,336 total runes. Levels reset at the end of every expedition, so the number only matters within a single run.

How many Nightlords are there?

Eight in the base game: Gladius, Adel, Gnoster, Maris, Libra, Fulghor, Caligo and Heolstor. They correspond to the Tricephalos, Gaping Jaw, Sentient Pest, Augur, Equilibrious Beast, Darkdrift Knight, Fissure in the Fog and Night Aspect expeditions.

Do I need to play Elden Ring first?

No. Nightreign reuses Elden Ring's combat feel and some enemies but tells a separate story in Limveld. Prior experience helps with dodge timing rather than with plot.

What carries over between runs?

Relics, unlocked Nightfarers, cleared Shifting Earth blessings and your Nightlord unlock progress. Runes, levels, weapons and in-run passives are all wiped.
