FromSoftware released Nightreign on 30 May 2025 as a three player roguelike built on Elden Ring's combat. Every expedition drops a squad into Limveld for three in-game days, with the layout of camps, churches and forts reshuffled each run. Day three always ends against one of eight Nightlords, and losing wipes the entire loadout you spent the run assembling.
Combat in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Three day expedition loop
Days one and two each finish with a Night Boss, and the third night is the Nightlord fight the whole run has been building toward. Runes, weapons and passives all reset afterwards, so the run is judged on how strong you were at the final gate.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Night's Tide closing ring
Rain sweeps in twice per day and squeezes the squad into a shrinking circle, draining health if you linger outside it. Route planning is a real skill here because the ring decides which points of interest you can still bank before the boss.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Rune levelling at Sites of Grace
Any Site of Grace converts runes into levels, capped at 15, which needs 513,336 runes across the run. There is no stat allocation; each Nightfarer climbs a fixed curve, so level number alone tells you their power.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Relics and Relic Rites
Relics slot into colour coded sockets on a Nightfarer and are the only progression that survives between runs. Rune acquisition relics are the standard opening pick because two of them make level 15 realistic on a clean expedition.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Shifting Earth events
Four events rewrite chunks of Limveld: The Crater, The Mountaintop, Rotted Woods and Noklateo. Clearing one grants a lasting blessing, such as frostbite resistance from The Mountaintop or a weapon upgraded to Legendary from The Crater.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Three day expedition loop + Night's Tide closing ring
Days one and two each finish with a Night Boss, and the third night is the Nightlord fight the whole run has been building toward. When combined with Night's Tide closing ring, rain sweeps in twice per day and squeezes the squad into a shrinking circle, draining health if you linger outside it. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Rune levelling at Sites of Grace + Relics and Relic Rites
Any Site of Grace converts runes into levels, capped at 15, which needs 513,336 runes across the run. Paired with Relics and Relic Rites, relics slot into colour coded sockets on a nightfarer and are the only progression that survives between runs. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Shifting Earth events as a Multiplier
Four events rewrite chunks of Limveld: The Crater, The Mountaintop, Rotted Woods and Noklateo. Clearing one grants a lasting blessing, such as frostbite resistance from The Mountaintop or a weapon upgraded to Legendary from The Crater. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Shifting Earth events optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Three day expedition loop for maximum damage windows
- Chain Night's Tide closing ring and Rune levelling at Sites of Grace for combo damage
- Use Relics and Relic Rites to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Look up your target Nightlord's weakness before you queue. Gladius and Adel take extra damage from poison, Gnoster and Caligo from fire, Maris and Fulghor from lightning, Libra from madness and Heolstor from holy. Picking a matching weapon on the first church visit saves ten minutes of hunting.
- Position using Three day expedition loop to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Night's Tide closing ring: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Roundtable Hold but will get you killed in Noklateo, the Shrouded City.
