Obsidian built New Vegas in about eighteen months on Fallout 3's engine, and it is still the reference point for reactive RPG writing. You play a courier shot in the head over a package, then decide whether the Mojave belongs to the NCR, Caesar's Legion, Mr. House or nobody at all. Thirteen skills, a perk on every even level, and a cap of 50 once all four story DLCs are installed.
Fallout: New Vegas features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Goodsprings | Levels 1 to 4 | Varmint rifle, Sunny Smiles' hunting lesson, first faction reputation choice | Energy weapons specialist |
| 2 | Primm | Levels 3 to 7 | ED-E, Vance's 9mm SMG, the sheriff decision | Energy weapons specialist |
| 3 | Novac | Levels 6 to 12 | Boone as a companion, That Gun, the Come Fly With Me quest | Cowboy gunslinger |
| 4 | Freeside | Levels 8 to 16 | Arcade Gannon, Silver Rush energy weapons, Strip entry | Cowboy gunslinger |
| 5 | Hoover Dam | Level 20 and above | Faction ending, endgame equipment, the last point of no return | Cowboy gunslinger |
Goodsprings: Starting Area
Where Doc Mitchell digs you out of a shallow grave. The cemetery, the schoolhouse and the Ghost Town Gunfight quest teach the reputation system before you meet anyone who matters.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Levels 1 to 4 |
| Key Rewards | Varmint rifle, Sunny Smiles' hunting lesson, first faction reputation choice |
| Recommended Build | Energy weapons specialist |
| Key Equipment | Anti-Materiel Rifle |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of SPECIAL and skill points. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Primm.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Primm: Early Game
A raider-occupied town on the road east, built around the Vikki and Vance casino and an argument about who should be sheriff. The NCR Correctional Facility sits just north and ED-E is repaired here.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Levels 3 to 7 |
| Key Rewards | ED-E, Vance's 9mm SMG, the sheriff decision |
| Recommended Build | Energy weapons specialist |
| Key Equipment | Anti-Materiel Rifle |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Perks every two levels. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Anti-Materiel Rifle if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Novac.
Novac: Mid Game
A motel built around a dinosaur, with Boone standing in the dinosaur's mouth at night and Cliff Briscoe selling That Gun below. REPCONN is west and the Legion problem at Nelson is east.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Levels 6 to 12 |
| Key Rewards | Boone as a companion, That Gun, the Come Fly With Me quest |
| Recommended Build | Cowboy gunslinger |
| Key Equipment | Anti-Materiel Rifle |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- That Gun becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Faction reputation for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Freeside: Late Game
The lawless district outside the Strip, run by the Kings and the Van Graffs and policed by nobody. The Old Mormon Fort holds the Followers of the Apocalypse and the Silver Rush sells energy weapons found almost nowhere else.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Levels 8 to 16 |
| Key Rewards | Arcade Gannon, Silver Rush energy weapons, Strip entry |
| Recommended Build | Cowboy gunslinger |
| Key Equipment | That Gun |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- That Gun should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Hardcore mode mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Hoover Dam.
Hoover Dam: Endgame
The strategic prize the whole game argues about, garrisoned by the NCR and coveted by the Legion. Every faction decision you made resolves here in the final battle.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Level 20 and above |
| Key Rewards | Faction ending, endgame equipment, the last point of no return |
| Recommended Build | Cowboy gunslinger |
| Key Equipment | That Gun |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Speech and Barter diplomat for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Goodsprings → Primm → Novac → Freeside → Hoover Dam. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
