This Fallout: New Vegas tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.

Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Detailed Builds Analysis

Cowboy gunslinger (S-Tier)

Revolvers, lever-action rifles, dynamite and knives, all boosted 25 percent by the Cowboy perk from level 8. It is the highest damage per cap build in the base game and it fits the setting exactly.

Best with: Lucky, La Longue Carabine, Medicine Stick, NCR Ranger armour. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Agility and Luck first, then Perception, with Guns pushed to 100 early

Energy weapons specialist (A-Tier)

Lasers and plasma trade ammunition scarcity for extreme damage against armour. The Silver Rush in Freeside and the Van Graffs are the only reliable suppliers until Old World Blues opens up.

Best with: Q-35 Matter Modulator, YCS/186, Sonic Emitter, Elijah's Advanced LAER. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Energy Weapons to 100, Science high for Meltdown and Vigilant Recycler

Unarmed brawler (A-Tier)

Unarmed scales through a dedicated perk chain plus special moves taught by trainers around the Mojave. It costs no ammunition at all, which makes it the strongest Hardcore mode build by a wide margin.

Best with: Ballistic Fist, Two-Step Goodbye, Love and Hate, Pushy. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Strength 7 or higher, Endurance for implants, Unarmed and Melee to 100

Sneak sniper (A-Tier)

Sneak attack criticals multiply damage, and the Anti-Materiel Rifle plus a suppressed backup clears most encounters before they begin. Fragile in the open, so positioning matters more than gear.

Best with: Anti-Materiel Rifle, Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle, Ratslayer, Stealth Boys. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Agility and Perception, Luck for criticals, Sneak and Guns to 100

Speech and Barter diplomat (B-Tier)

New Vegas resolves more quests through dialogue than through combat, and a Speech of 100 opens paths no build can shoot its way into. Weak in a firefight, so it leans on a companion who is not.

Best with: Naughty Nightwear, Lucky Shades, Party Time Mentats, faction armour sets. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Charisma and Intelligence at creation, Speech and Barter to 100 before anything else

Equipment Analysis

That Gun: A .223 revolver sold by Cliff Briscoe in the Dino Bite gift shop in Novac, and one of the best early purchases in the game. It fires 5.56mm rounds at high damage with only a modest Guns requirement.

Anti-Materiel Rifle: A .50 MG bolt action that deletes almost anything in one aimed shot, Deathclaws included with the right ammunition. Rounds are heavy and expensive, which makes it a genuine logistics decision in Hardcore mode.

This Machine: A .308 semi-automatic rifle, an M1 Garand in all but name, handed over for the Dealing with Contreras quest at Camp McCarran. High damage per shot with a fast follow-up and no scope to fuss with.

Ratslayer: A unique varmint rifle in Broc Flower Cave that arrives with a night vision scope, a silencer and a much faster reload than the base weapon. It eats cheap 5.56mm ammunition.

Ballistic Fist: A shotgun bolted to a power fist and the top-end Unarmed weapon in the base game. Backed by Piercing Strike and the unarmed perk chain it kills most humanoids in one or two hits.

Meta Analysis

The current meta in Fallout: New Vegas centers on SPECIAL and skill points and Perks every two levels. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.

What's strong right now:

  • Cowboy gunslinger with That Gun is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
  • Faction reputation builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
  • Unarmed brawler remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.

What's underrated:

  • Energy weapons specialist is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
  • This Machine offers excellent performance for its investment level.

What's overhyped:

  • Pure Speech and Barter diplomat builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
