LEVEL-5 released FANTASY LIFE i: The Girl Who Steals Time on May 21, 2025 after two delays from its original 2023 announcement. You move between a wrecked present day island and the same island as it stood a thousand years earlier, carrying materials and knowledge across the gap to rebuild it. Fourteen Lives split into four combat, four gathering and six crafting jobs, and one character can hold all of them at once.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Light the tower in a new region before doing anything else in it

Light the tower in a new region before doing anything else in it. Each of the 15 Ginormosia towers reveals a large slice of the local map and then works as a fast travel anchor, which turns a region from a maze into a checklist.

2. Life ranks move on Life Challenges, not on time spent

Life ranks move on Life Challenges, not on time spent. Open the challenge list for your active Life before you head out, pick a route that clears several at once, and report back to that Life's Master to bank the rank points.

3. Rank at least one gathering Life ahead of the crafting Life it feeds

Rank at least one gathering Life ahead of the crafting Life it feeds. A Blacksmith stalls without Miner ore and a Cook stalls without Angler and Farmer output, so the crafting wall is almost always a gathering problem.

4. Switching Lives costs you nothing, so use the right one for the job in front of you rather than picking a favourite

Switching Lives costs you nothing, so use the right one for the job in front of you rather than picking a favourite. Progress on all fourteen is stored separately and none of it decays while you play something else.

5. Shrines are short mini dungeons rather than long expeditions, and there are 20 of them

Shrines are short mini dungeons rather than long expeditions, and there are 20 of them. Clearing one when you pass it is far cheaper than routing back later for a completion sweep.

6. The 75 Leafes hide in genuinely obscure spots and the 16 Legendary Recipe pedestals sit in hard to reach corners of their regions

The 75 Leafes hide in genuinely obscure spots and the 16 Legendary Recipe pedestals sit in hard to reach corners of their regions. Treat both as a second pass after a region's tower has revealed the terrain.

7. Your island build accepts terrain edits, not just furniture

Your island build accepts terrain edits, not just furniture. Reshaping the ground and drawing rivers and roads before you place buildings saves you from tearing the settlement apart later.

8. Carry the past era's abundance into the present

Carry the past era's abundance into the present. The island a thousand years back still has intact resources, so gather there when the present day version cannot supply what a recipe needs.

9. Bring a Cook's meals to any field boss

Bring a Cook's meals to any field boss. The buffs are long lasting and cost only the ingredients your gathering Lives already collect, which makes them the cheapest power increase in the game.

10. Play with company if you can

Play with company if you can. Online supports up to four players and there is a two player local mode where a partner joins as your travelling companion, which lets one person gather while the other fights.

Advanced Strategies

Build Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Paladin (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Fourteen swappable Lives combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: Swords
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Mercenary (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: Greatswords
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how FANTASY LIFE i: The Girl Who Steals Time's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Fourteen swappable Lives + Life ranks and Life Challenges: Four combat Lives, four gathering Lives and six crafting Lives all sit on one character, and you switch between them at any moment. Combined with Life ranks and Life Challenges, every life licence has ten ranks starting at novice and moving through fledgling and apprentice.

Two era time travel + Island rebuilding and terrain shaping: The island you find in the present is ruined, while the version a thousand years earlier is intact and populated. When paired with Island rebuilding and terrain shaping, you place houses and objects across your settlement, then reshape the ground itself and draw rivers and roads through it.

Ginormosia towers and shrines scaling: Ginormosia holds 15 regions, each with a tower that reveals the local map and doubles as a fast travel point. Scattered across them are 20 shrines that work as mini dungeons, 75 hidden Leafes and 16 Legendary Recipe pedestals.

Equipment Efficiency

EquipmentBest Use CaseWhy
SwordsNew players and any expedition into a region ahead of your story chapter. The Paladin weapon family, always paired with a shield.
GreatswordsPlayers who read attack patterns and want boss fights over quickly. The Mercenary weapon family, swung two handed with long wind up and recovery.
BowsPicking off aerial targets and softening a boss before your party engages. The Hunter weapon family, built for precision at range.
StavesClearing packs of monsters while gathering, and exploiting a boss's elemental weakness. The Magician weapon family, throwing elemental magic from distance.
SticksThe opening chapter on Mysteria Island before a Life Licence is issued. The starting weapon you carry before choosing a combat Life, and the only weapon family that is not tied to one of the four combat jobs.

Location Efficiency

Mysteria Island (Chapter 1): Where the game opens, both in its ruined present state and as the thriving island of a thousand years earlier with the Capital of Mysteria at its centre. You leave it at the end of Chapter 1 aboard the Bone Dragon.

Ginormosia (Post Chapter 1 onward): The large continent that opens after Chapter 1, made up of 15 regions each carrying its own tower. It holds the bulk of the 20 shrines, 75 Leafes and 16 Legendary Recipes.

East Dryridge Desert (Early to mid Ginormosia): One of the two Dryridge desert regions and home to the settlement of Haniwa Hamlet. Desert regions run hot and open, which makes the tower climb the first job on arrival.

Shroomhaven (Mid Ginormosia): A fungal region built around Simian Settlement, with terrain and gathering nodes that differ sharply from the desert and plains regions either side of it.

Fangshore Isles (Mid to late Ginormosia): The coastal island chain holding Tortortoise Town, and the natural home for Angler work once your rod has been ranked up through a few Life ranks.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Locking into a single combat Life and hitting a material wall because no gathering Life was ranked.
  2. Grinding monsters for Life rank instead of clearing and reporting Life Challenges.
  3. Running past a region's tower, then exploring the whole area with the map still blacked out.
  4. Placing island buildings before shaping the terrain, which forces a rebuild later.
  5. Selling rare gathered materials for money when a crafting Life needs them for a Legendary Recipe.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Light the tower in a new region before doing anything else in it. Each of the 15 Ginormosia towers reveals a large slice of the local map and then works as a fast travel anchor, which turns a region from a maze into a checklist.
  • Life ranks move on Life Challenges, not on time spent. Open the challenge list for your active Life before you head out, pick a route that clears several at once, and report back to that Life's Master to bank the rank points.
  • Rank at least one gathering Life ahead of the crafting Life it feeds. A Blacksmith stalls without Miner ore and a Cook stalls without Angler and Farmer output, so the crafting wall is almost always a gathering problem.
  • Start with Mercenary, switch to Paladin when ready
  • Invest in Swords above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Mysteria Island → Ginormosia → East Dryridge Desert → Shroomhaven → Fangshore Isles. See our maps guide
  • Fourteen swappable Lives + Life ranks and Life Challenges together are stronger than either alone
