This is the second entry in Square Enix's remake trilogy, not the 1997 original and not Remake, and it reached PC on 23 January 2025. It picks up as the party leaves Midgar and runs through open regions from the Grasslands to the Forgotten Capital, with nine playable characters across the story. Combat keeps the ATB and stagger system from Remake and adds per character Folio skill trees, paired team attacks and a card game deep enough to swallow entire evenings.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Cloud
Cloud is a top-performing option in FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.

| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |

| Key Mechanic | ATB gauges and staggering | Basic attacks and blocks charge ATB bars that pay for abilities, spells and items, and pressuring an enemy fills its stagger gauge. |
How to Play Cloud
Cloud focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Buster Sword does the damage and ATB gauges and staggering keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Barret
Barret is a strong option in FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Kaiser Knuckles | One of Tifa's knuckle options, and knuckles are the fastest weapon class in the party. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Folio skill trees and SP | Each character has a Folio, a board of skill cores bought with SP earned from levelling and from manuscripts found in the world. |
How to Play Barret
Barret focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Kaiser Knuckles with Folio skill trees and SP and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Tifa
Tifa is a strong option in FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |

| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Weapon abilities and proficiency | Every weapon carries an ability that is usable only while that weapon is equipped, and repeated use raises its proficiency. |

Why this build works: Weapon abilities and proficiency covers the gap Fafnir Rifle leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Aerith
Aerith is a specialized option in FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |

| Primary Equipment | Gambanteinn | Aerith's late staff, and staves scale her magic hard enough that the difference shows immediately inside an Arcane Ward. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Materia across five colours | Materia comes in five types: green Magic, blue Support, yellow Command, purple Complete and red Summon. |

Why this build works: This one leans on Materia across five colours rather than raw numbers, and Gambanteinn is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge

Build Progression Path

- Transition to Cloud once you understand core mechanics and have access to Buster Sword
- Keep a Tifa setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Red XIII for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Blocking charges ATB and running away does not. Against bosses that combo, holding guard through the sequence generates more resources than dodging out of range and waiting, which is the single biggest habit change from action games.
- Cycle weapons deliberately in early chapters. Weapon abilities become permanent once their proficiency maxes, so a character who rotated through four weapons in the Grasslands enters Junon with four abilities available from any loadout.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
