This is the second entry in Square Enix's remake trilogy, not the 1997 original and not Remake, and it reached PC on 23 January 2025. It picks up as the party leaves Midgar and runs through open regions from the Grasslands to the Forgotten Capital, with nine playable characters across the story. Combat keeps the ATB and stagger system from Remake and adds per character Folio skill trees, paired team attacks and a card game deep enough to swallow entire evenings.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Blocking charges ATB and running away does not
Blocking charges ATB and running away does not. Against bosses that combo, holding guard through the sequence generates more resources than dodging out of range and waiting, which is the single biggest habit change from action games.
2. Cycle weapons deliberately in early chapters
Cycle weapons deliberately in early chapters. Weapon abilities become permanent once their proficiency maxes, so a character who rotated through four weapons in the Grasslands enters Junon with four abilities available from any loadout.
3. Spend SP as soon as you earn it instead of hoarding for a late Folio node
Spend SP as soon as you earn it instead of hoarding for a late Folio node. Manuscripts found in the world keep topping the pool up, and an unspent point does nothing for the fight in front of you.
4. Push stagger before you spend your big abilities
Push stagger before you spend your big abilities. Hitting a staggered enemy with Tifa's upgraded chain first raises the damage multiplier, so the same limit break lands for considerably more afterwards.
5. Complete all three summon shrines in a region before attempting that region's Combat Simulator summon fight
Complete all three summon shrines in a region before attempting that region's Combat Simulator summon fight. Each shrine strengthens the summon and lowers the fight's intensity, and the last upgrade grants extra abilities.
6. Link Magnify to a healing materia on Aerith rather than to an attack spell
Link Magnify to a healing materia on Aerith rather than to an attack spell. Party wide healing at reduced potency solves far more encounters than a slightly wider fire spell.
7. Aerith's Arcane Ward doubles spells cast from inside it, so the whole party plan should be about keeping her in it
Aerith's Arcane Ward doubles spells cast from inside it, so the whole party plan should be about keeping her in it. Use Barret to take aggro rather than moving her every time something looks threatening.
8. Play Queen's Blood as you travel rather than saving it
Play Queen's Blood as you travel rather than saving it. There are 145 cards in total, some opponents disappear once the story moves on, and the rewards feed directly back into combat power.
9. Use Yuffie to identify weaknesses when you have no information about an enemy
Use Yuffie to identify weaknesses when you have no information about an enemy. Her Ninjutsu switches element on demand, which is faster than rebuilding another character's materia to test one at a time.
10. Hard mode disables items entirely and stops MP recovering at benches, so it is a materia and Folio test rather than a reflex test
Hard mode disables items entirely and stops MP recovering at benches, so it is a materia and Folio test rather than a reflex test. Do not start it until your Folios are close to complete and your healing runs on Prayer style abilities rather than potions.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Cloud (A-Tier):
- Focus on ATB gauges and staggering combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Buster Sword
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Barret (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Kaiser Knuckles
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
ATB gauges and staggering + Folio skill trees and SP: Basic attacks and blocks charge ATB bars that pay for abilities, spells and items, and pressuring an enemy fills its stagger gauge. Combined with Folio skill trees and SP, each character has a folio, a board of skill cores bought with sp earned from levelling and from manuscripts found in the world.
Weapon abilities and proficiency + Materia across five colours: Every weapon carries an ability that is usable only while that weapon is equipped, and repeated use raises its proficiency. When paired with Materia across five colours, materia comes in five types: green magic, blue support, yellow command, purple complete and red summon.
World Intel and summon shrines scaling: Chadley's checklist covers Remnawave towers, Lifesprings, Fiend Intel, protorelics, Moogle houses and Divine Intel. Each region holds three summon shrines that strengthen that region's summon and make its Combat Simulator fight less punishing, and upgrading every summon is what unlocks Gilgamesh as the last red materia.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Buster Sword | Cloud players in the first regions, and anyone farming weapon ability proficiency cheaply | Cloud's starting broadsword and a balanced option that never becomes useless because its ability is worth mastering early. |
| Kaiser Knuckles | Tifa builds focused on pressure and stagger bonus rather than direct damage | One of Tifa's knuckle options, and knuckles are the fastest weapon class in the party. |
| Fafnir Rifle | Barret tanking builds that still need to contribute damage between guard phases | A Barret gun arm that keeps his ranged damage relevant against flying and distant enemies the melee characters cannot touch. |
| Gambanteinn | Aerith caster builds running doubled spells from a ward | Aerith's late staff, and staves scale her magic hard enough that the difference shows immediately inside an Arcane Ward. |
| Fuma Shuriken | Yuffie builds cycling elements to find and exploit weaknesses quickly | Yuffie's late throwing star. |
Location Efficiency
Grasslands (Chapter 2 onward): The first open region after Midgar, centred on Kalm and the chocobo ranch. It teaches the World Intel loop: activate Remnawave towers, follow the revealed markers to Lifesprings and Fiend Intel, and use the region chocobo to reach what walking cannot.
Junon Region (Chapters 3 to 5): Coastal cliffs and beaches around Junon itself, with a mountain chocobo that climbs surfaces the standard bird cannot. The vertical terrain hides more intel markers than the Grasslands does, so towers matter more here.
Corel Region (Chapters 6 to 8): Desert and coastline stretching from Costa del Sol toward the Gold Saucer, and the widest open space in the game. Long travel distances make the chocobo and the fast travel points genuinely necessary rather than optional.
Gongaga Region (Chapter 9): Dense jungle built around mushroom platforms that launch you between elevations, which is the least readable map in the game on a first pass. Following the intel markers in order saves considerable backtracking.
Cosmo Canyon Region (Chapter 10): Canyon country and open plateaus around the observatory, with wide vertical drops that reward a gliding traversal route. Red XIII's story runs through here, and the region's combat challenges scale up sharply.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Playing it like an action game, dodging constantly and never generating enough ATB to use abilities.
- Sticking with one weapon per character and reaching the late chapters with almost no permanently learned weapon abilities.
- Dumping limit breaks the moment an enemy staggers instead of raising the stagger multiplier first.
- Skipping the summon shrines and then losing the Combat Simulator fights the shrines were meant to soften.
- Treating Queen's Blood as optional and missing card rewards from opponents who leave with the story.
Pro Quick Tips
- Blocking charges ATB and running away does not. Against bosses that combo, holding guard through the sequence generates more resources than dodging out of range and waiting, which is the single biggest habit change from action games.
- Cycle weapons deliberately in early chapters. Weapon abilities become permanent once their proficiency maxes, so a character who rotated through four weapons in the Grasslands enters Junon with four abilities available from any loadout.
- Spend SP as soon as you earn it instead of hoarding for a late Folio node. Manuscripts found in the world keep topping the pool up, and an unspent point does nothing for the fight in front of you.
- Start with Barret, switch to Cloud when ready
- Invest in Buster Sword above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Grasslands → Junon Region → Corel Region → Gongaga Region → Cosmo Canyon Region. See our maps guide
- ATB gauges and staggering + Folio skill trees and SP together are stronger than either alone
