Game River released Mechabellum out of Early Access on 26 September 2024 with Dreamhaven publishing. It is an auto-battler played entirely between rounds: you spend supply on units, place them on a grid, buy tech upgrades and draft reinforcement cards, then watch the battle resolve without touching anything. Around 29 units exist, and almost every one of them is the answer to some other one, so reading your opponent's board matters more than any single strong unit.
Mechabellum features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1v1 Ranked | Full matches, typically eight to twelve rounds | Ladder rating and the fastest exposure to real counter play | Anti-air |
| 2 | 2v2 Team Battle | Full matches with a partner | Coverage splits that are impossible in a solo game | Anti-air |
| 3 | Free For All | Multiplayer lobbies | Practice at building boards that answer several different threats at once | Chaff swarm |
| 4 | Solo Survival | Escalating waves in a single run | Safe experimentation with unit tech and card drafts | Chaff swarm |
| 5 | Rift Mode | Rotating rule sets | Forced variety that exposes the gaps in your default build | Chaff swarm |
1v1 Ranked: Starting Area
The main competitive mode and where the counter-reading loop matters most. Practising against the Insane bot first is genuinely more useful than low-rating ladder games, because weak opponents punish none of your mistakes.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Full matches, typically eight to twelve rounds |
| Key Rewards | Ladder rating and the fastest exposure to real counter play |
| Recommended Build | Anti-air |
| Key Equipment | Fang |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Round-based deployment on a grid. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to 2v2 Team Battle.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
2v2 Team Battle: Early Game
Two players share a front against another pair, which changes what units are worth buying. Coordinating so one player covers air while the other covers chaff beats both players building the same board.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Full matches with a partner |
| Key Rewards | Coverage splits that are impossible in a solo game |
| Recommended Build | Anti-air |
| Key Equipment | Fang |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Unit tech upgrades. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Fang if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Free For All.
Free For All: Mid Game
Multiple players competing at once, where committing everything into one opponent leaves you exposed to the rest. Board efficiency matters more here than any single strong matchup.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Multiplayer lobbies |
| Key Rewards | Practice at building boards that answer several different threats at once |
| Recommended Build | Chaff swarm |
| Key Equipment | Fang |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Crawler becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Reinforcement card drafts for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Solo Survival: Late Game
A single-player run against escalating waves, and the best place to learn what each unit and tech upgrade actually does without a human opponent punishing the experiment. A co-op version also exists.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Escalating waves in a single run |
| Key Rewards | Safe experimentation with unit tech and card drafts |
| Recommended Build | Chaff swarm |
| Key Equipment | Crawler |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Crawler should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Counter reading between rounds mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Rift Mode.
Rift Mode: Endgame
A mode with rotating rule sets, which shakes up what is strong from one rotation to the next. Good for breaking habits, because a build that always works in ranked frequently falls apart under a different rule set.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Rotating rule sets |
| Key Rewards | Forced variety that exposes the gaps in your default build |
| Recommended Build | Chaff swarm |
| Key Equipment | Crawler |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Air for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: 1v1 Ranked → 2v2 Team Battle → Free For All → Solo Survival → Rift Mode. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
