Monster Train 2 keeps the three floor vertical defence of the original and adds two card types that change how decks are built. You are defending a Pyre aboard a moving train against waves that climb toward it, and the sequel's Room and Equipment cards mean a run is now shaped as much by what you attach and install as by which units you play.
Combat in Monster Train 2 rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Three floor vertical defence
Enemies enter at the bottom and climb. Anything that survives a floor moves up, so floor assignment is the core tactical decision every combat.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Pyre health
The Pyre is your life total and sits at the top of the train. It also fights, so leaning on it to finish leaked enemies is a real strategy with a real cost.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Dual clan deck building
You pick a main and an allied clan, and the pairing decides which card pool you draw from. Five clans means the pairings, not the individual clans, are what you are really learning.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Equipment cards
Equipment attaches to a specific unit and stays there permanently, turning one champion into a scaling threat. Losing that unit loses the equipment with it.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Room cards
Rooms install on a floor and apply an ongoing effect to whatever occupies it. They reward committing to a floor plan early rather than reshuffling units every fight.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Three floor vertical defence + Pyre health
Enemies enter at the bottom and climb. When combined with Pyre health, the pyre is your life total and sits at the top of the train. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Dual clan deck building + Equipment cards
You pick a main and an allied clan, and the pairing decides which card pool you draw from. Paired with Equipment cards, equipment attaches to a specific unit and stays there permanently, turning one champion into a scaling threat. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Room cards as a Multiplier
Rooms install on a floor and apply an ongoing effect to whatever occupies it. They reward committing to a floor plan early rather than reshuffling units every fight. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Room cards optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Three floor vertical defence for maximum damage windows
- Chain Pyre health and Dual clan deck building for combo damage
- Use Equipment cards to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Decide where each enemy wave should die before you spend a single ember. Playing strong cards on the bottom floor feels safe and usually wastes them, because the fight is decided by what survives to the top.
- Position using Three floor vertical defence to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Pyre health: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Bottom floor but will get you killed in Dimensional Challenges.
