Monster Train 2 keeps the three floor vertical defence of the original and adds two card types that change how decks are built. You are defending a Pyre aboard a moving train against waves that climb toward it, and the sequel's Room and Equipment cards mean a run is now shaped as much by what you attach and install as by which units you play.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Bottom floor)
The first line of contact where cheap chaff units buy time. Anything that survives here climbs, so the goal is attrition rather than a full stop.
Level/Difficulty: Every battle Key Rewards: Tempo, damage absorption
What to Do in Bottom floor
- Learn Three floor vertical defence. Enemies enter at the bottom and climb. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Spell burst caster as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Decide where each enemy wave should die before you spend a single ember. Playing strong cards on the bottom floor feels safe and usually wastes them, because the fight is decided by what survives to the top.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Room cards or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Three floor vertical defence fundamentals
- Spell burst caster selected and functional
- Bottom floor main content cleared
- Ready for Middle floor
Phase 2: Early Game (Middle floor)
Where most runs place their real damage. It gets two chances to kill anything that leaks upward and is far enough from the Pyre to be safe.
Level/Difficulty: Every battle Key Rewards: Primary damage output
What to Do in Middle floor
- Work on Pyre health. The Pyre is your life total and sits at the top of the train. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Room cards if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Equipment is permanent on a unit and lost with it. Attach it to something with the defensive statistics to survive a full run, not to whichever unit happens to be strongest in the current fight.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Top floor.
- Consider whether Equipment stacker might suit your playstyle better than Spell burst caster.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Pyre health integrated into gameplay
- Room cards acquired
- Middle floor fully cleared
- Ready for Top floor
Phase 3: Mid Game (Top floor)
Last defence before the Pyre, and the natural home for an equipment stacked champion that must not die.
Level/Difficulty: Every battle Key Rewards: Final line, champion protection
What to Do in Top floor
- Master Dual clan deck building. You pick a main and an allied clan, and the pairing decides which card pool you draw from. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Equipment cards. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Room cards reward a formation you intend to keep. If your plan involves moving units between floors every battle, the room bonus is being spread across units that do not benefit consistently.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Equipment cards for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Dual clan deck building mastered
- Equipment cards acquired or in progress
- Top floor fully cleared
- Ready for Celestial Alcoves
Phase 4: Late Game (Celestial Alcoves)
Random events between battles that offer upgrades, cards or trades. Reading whether an offer suits your build matters more than raw value.
Level/Difficulty: Between battles Key Rewards: Upgrades, cards, gold
What to Do in Celestial Alcoves
- Finalize your build. You should be running Equipment stacker or Spell burst caster with optimized gear.
- Equipment cards should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- The Pyre is a combat participant, not only a health bar. Deliberately allowing one weak enemy through so the Pyre can finish it is efficient, but that plan collapses the moment two leak instead of one.
- Room cards optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Dimensional Challenges.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Equipment cards upgraded to max
- Celestial Alcoves fully cleared
- Ready for Dimensional Challenges
Phase 5: Endgame (Dimensional Challenges)
Runs with custom mutators layered on top, changing the rules enough that standard build advice stops applying.
Level/Difficulty: Post first clear Key Rewards: Variety, mastery practice
What to Do in Dimensional Challenges
- Dimensional Challenges tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Clan pairings matter more than clan strength. Learn which allied clan covers your main clan's weakness, because a strong main paired badly loses to Ascension ranks a weaker but coherent pairing handles.
- The endgame loop: run Dimensional Challenges, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Pyre tank for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Room cards mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Dimensional Challenges fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Stacking the bottom floor and leaving the top undefended when enemies leak
- Attaching expensive equipment to a fragile unit that dies in the next fight
- Taking every free card until the deck is too diluted to draw its win condition
- Installing room cards then constantly repositioning units away from them
- Hoarding gold through the final battles instead of converting it to power
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Decide where each enemy wave should die before you spend a single ember. Playing strong cards on the bottom floor feels safe and usually wastes them, because the fight is decided by what survives to the top.
- Equipment is permanent on a unit and lost with it. Attach it to something with the defensive statistics to survive a full run, not to whichever unit happens to be strongest in the current fight.
- Room cards reward a formation you intend to keep. If your plan involves moving units between floors every battle, the room bonus is being spread across units that do not benefit consistently.
- The Pyre is a combat participant, not only a health bar. Deliberately allowing one weak enemy through so the Pyre can finish it is efficient, but that plan collapses the moment two leak instead of one.
- Clan pairings matter more than clan strength. Learn which allied clan covers your main clan's weakness, because a strong main paired badly loses to Ascension ranks a weaker but coherent pairing handles.
