Monster Train 2 keeps the three floor vertical defence of the original and adds two card types that change how decks are built. You are defending a Pyre aboard a moving train against waves that climb toward it, and the sequel's Room and Equipment cards mean a run is now shaped as much by what you attach and install as by which units you play.

Monster Train 2 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Bottom floor: Starting Area

The first line of contact where cheap chaff units buy time. Anything that survives here climbs, so the goal is attrition rather than a full stop.

What to Do Here

Middle floor: Early Game

Where most runs place their real damage. It gets two chances to kill anything that leaks upward and is far enough from the Pyre to be safe.

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Pyre health. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Room cards if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Top floor.

Top floor: Mid Game

Last defence before the Pyre, and the natural home for an equipment stacked champion that must not die.

Celestial Alcoves: Late Game

Random events between battles that offer upgrades, cards or trades. Reading whether an offer suits your build matters more than raw value.

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Equipment cards should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Room cards mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Dimensional Challenges.

Dimensional Challenges: Endgame

Runs with custom mutators layered on top, changing the rules enough that standard build advice stops applying.

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Pyre tank for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Bottom floor → Middle floor → Top floor → Celestial Alcoves → Dimensional Challenges. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
