Pathea Games left Early Access with My Time at Sandrock on 2 November 2023, moving the Portia formula into a desert town where water is rationed and the last workshop just closed. You collect a Builder License from Matilda at City Hall, then take commissions from Yan at the Commerce Guild while Mi-an competes for the same board. Progress runs through machines rather than through farming: a Recycler breaks down scrap, a Furnace smelts bars and glass, a Grinder makes gears and rivets and a Processor cuts planks, all feeding an Assembly Station that rebuilds the town.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Why this build works: Pickhammer does the damage and Commission board and workshop ranking keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Salvage and ruin diver
Salvage and ruin diver is a strong option in My Time at Sandrock.
Core Setup

| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Machine chain from scrap to parts | The Recycler turns salvaged scrap into usable materials, the Furnace smelts ore into bars, bricks and glass, the Grinder produces pipes, wires, gears and rivets, the Processor cuts planks, plates and boards, and the Blender mixes medicine, sandfishing bait, cooking ingredients and fertiliser. |
How to Play Salvage and ruin diver
Salvage and ruin diver focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Bronze Sword and Shield with Machine chain from scrap to parts and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:

- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Machine automation engineer
Focuses Data Discs on machine upgrades rather than on weapons or furniture, so that each machine runs longer per load and produces more per material. The Ore Refinery at 10 Data Discs and the Dew Collector at 8 are the first two targets.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Motivational Hammer | A common find that hits slowly and heavily, which makes it the best weapon in the game for dropping an enemy's Break Bar. |
| Core Gear | Ore Refinery, Dew Collector, upgraded Furnace and Grinder tiers | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Research points first, then power and water supply, then machine count | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Data Discs and the Research Center | Data Discs pulled out of ruins are spent at the Research Center to unlock blueprints and machine upgrades. |
How to Play Machine automation engineer
Spend every Data Disc as it arrives, and expand the yard footprint before expanding the house.
Focuses Data Discs on machine upgrades rather than on weapons or furniture, so that each machine runs longer per load and produces more per material. The Ore Refinery at 10 Data Discs and the Dew Collector at 8 are the first two targets.
Why this build works: Data Discs and the Research Center covers the gap Motivational Hammer leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. Core gear like Ore Refinery, Dew Collector, upgraded Furnace and Grinder tiers pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Clear stat priority (Research points first, then power and water supply, then machine count) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Farm and ranch supplier
Farm and ranch supplier is a specialized option in My Time at Sandrock.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|

| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Stamina, water and sandstorms | Sandrock rations water, which is why Burgess and Water World exist as a plot point rather than a background detail. |
How to Play Farm and ranch supplier
Farm and ranch supplier focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Stamina, water and sandstorms rather than raw numbers, and Bee-wing Blade is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Museum and relationship completionist
Museum and relationship completionist is a specialized option in My Time at Sandrock.

| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |

Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Salvage and ruin diver: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Commission specialist once you understand core mechanics and have access to Pickhammer
- Keep a Machine automation engineer setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Museum and relationship completionist for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Spend Data Discs before hoarding them. The Ore Refinery at 10 Data Discs turns ordinary ore into rarer materials and crystals, and the Dew Collector at 8 produces one Dew every eight hours, which compounds across a whole save.
- Machines run while you are away from the yard, so the correct last action of every morning is loading all of them. A day spent salvaging with an idle Furnace throws away half the day's output.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
