Owlcat Games released Wrath of the Righteous on 2 September 2021, built on the Pathfinder first edition tabletop rules and the adventure path of the same name. Character creation offers 25 classes, 12 races and more than a thousand spells, feats and abilities, and combat switches between turn based and real time with pause at any moment. Above all of that sit the Mythic Paths and a crusade layer where you command the Fifth Crusade against the Worldwound.

Combat in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - Enhanced Edition rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Mythic Paths

You gain mythic power at the end of Chapter 1 and commit to a path early in Chapter 2. Ten exist: Angel, Demon, Lich, Trickster, Aeon, Azata, Gold Dragon, Swarm That Walks, Devil and Legend, with the last few branching off later choices rather than appearing at the first fork.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Crusade army management

From Chapter 3 you run the Fifth Crusade out of Drezen, recruiting units, building forts and fighting army battles on a strategic map. The difficulty settings include an option that resolves those battles automatically if the layer does not appeal.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Turn based or real time with pause

Both modes are live and you can switch mid encounter. Turn based makes attacks of opportunity, initiative and buff durations readable, while real time clears easy fights in seconds.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Pathfinder first edition rules

Armour class, attack bonus, saving throws, spell resistance and roughly a thousand feats and spells all come straight from the tabletop system. The combat log prints every roll, so a fight you lost can be read back to find the exact number that failed.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Six chapters from Kenabres to the Worldwound

The campaign runs The Worldwound Incursion, Sword of Valor, Demon's Heresy, The Midnight Isles, Herald of the Ivory Labyrinth and City of Locusts. Drezen becomes your permanent base from Chapter 3 onward.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Mythic Paths + Crusade army management

You gain mythic power at the end of Chapter 1 and commit to a path early in Chapter 2. When combined with Crusade army management, from chapter 3 you run the fifth crusade out of drezen, recruiting units, building forts and fighting army battles on a strategic map. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Turn based or real time with pause + Pathfinder first edition rules

Both modes are live and you can switch mid encounter. Paired with Pathfinder first edition rules, armour class, attack bonus, saving throws, spell resistance and roughly a thousand feats and spells all come straight from the tabletop system. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Six chapters from Kenabres to the Worldwound as a Multiplier

The campaign runs The Worldwound Incursion, Sword of Valor, Demon's Heresy, The Midnight Isles, Herald of the Ivory Labyrinth and City of Locusts. Drezen becomes your permanent base from Chapter 3 onward. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Six chapters from Kenabres to the Worldwound optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Mythic Paths for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Crusade army management and Turn based or real time with pause for combo damage
  4. Use Pathfinder first edition rules to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Switch to turn based mode for any fight that killed you in real time. The same encounter becomes readable once you can see initiative, attacks of opportunity and buff durations, and you can switch back afterwards.
  3. Position using Mythic Paths to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Crusade army management: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Kenabres but will get you killed in Iz.
