Rec Room Inc. put Rec Room on Steam on 1 June 2016 as a free social platform, and it now cross plays across PC, SteamVR, Meta Quest, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS, Android and PICO headsets. The Rec Center is the hub, and its doors lead to first party games including Paintball, Laser Tag, Rec Royale, Dodgeball, Disc Golf, Soccer, Bowling and Paddleball. Everything beyond that is player built with the Maker Pen and Circuits V2, and creators who sell rooms and items can convert their earnings into real money.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

Maker Pen building

The Maker Pen arrived in October 2017 and replaced the older 3D Pen, adding more shapes, a wider colour set and a Clone tool. Creations could not be saved at first, which changed with the Saved Rooms Alpha update in December 2017. Every room has an ink budget, so the practical limit on a build is geometry count rather than imagination.

Circuits V2 visual scripting

Circuits V2 replaced the original wiring system in 2021 with grey rectangular chips and colour coded ports: orange for execution signals, blue for floating point values, green for integers and purple for text. The colour coding is the fastest way to debug a board, because a mismatched port simply will not connect. The original Circuits V1 from February 2018 ran events constantly and tracked players by ID.

Rec Room Studio and Unity

Announced in September 2022 as a partnership with Unity, Studio brings professional asset pipelines to Rec Room rooms. Access rolled out gradually from 2023 and eventually became free to every creator meeting the requirements, which include being level 20 or above, having published rooms and holding a clean moderation record.

Tokens and creator payouts

Tokens are the in-game currency, bought with real money, granted through the Rec Room Plus subscription or earned by playing Rec Room Originals. They buy cosmetics and items, and on the other side of the economy creators can exchange earnings from user generated content sales for real money.

Cross play between VR and screen

The same room holds VR players using tracked controllers and screen players on phones, consoles and desktop at once. VR players physically hold and aim items while screen players use conventional controls, which is why Paintball and Laser Tag are balanced around cover and movement rather than aim precision alone.

Equipment Guide

EquipmentWhy It MattersBest For
Splat ShotgunThe close range paint weapon that appears in Paintball and in Rec Royale loot.Paintball flanking routes and Rec Royale final circles
Splat SniperThe long range paint option in Paintball and Rec Royale, rewarding steady aim and punishing anyone who commits to an open lane.Holding open ground and opening Rec Royale engagements
BowA quest and Rec Royale weapon that requires a physical draw in VR and a charge on screen.Quest ranged play and quiet Rec Royale openings
Sword and ShieldThe signature quest pairing, giving you an active block alongside melee damage.Front lining co-op quests with one to four players
WandThe magic option in quests, projecting ranged damage without the arc management of the Bow.Screen players and mixed VR plus screen quest parties

Splat Shotgun: The close range paint weapon that appears in Paintball and in Rec Royale loot. It trades range for a wide spread that forgives imprecise aim, which is why screen players tend to score higher with it than with the Burst Rifle.

Splat Sniper: The long range paint option in Paintball and Rec Royale, rewarding steady aim and punishing anyone who commits to an open lane. In VR the physical shoulder mount makes a real difference to consistency.

Bow: A quest and Rec Royale weapon that requires a physical draw in VR and a charge on screen. Arrows arc, so it takes practice compared with the laser weapons, but it stays useful across the whole of Isle of Lost Skulls.

Sword and Shield: The signature quest pairing, giving you an active block alongside melee damage. It is the safest loadout for a player learning the enemy patterns in Quest for the Golden Trophy, which runs nine acts before its final boss.

Wand: The magic option in quests, projecting ranged damage without the arc management of the Bow. It is the most screen friendly quest weapon and pairs naturally with a melee player holding the front.

Location Progression

Rec CenterAvailable from account creationAccess to every Rec Room Original and the route into player made rooms
Rec RoyaleOpen to all players, PvPTokens from playing an Original, plus the fastest way to learn every weapon
Quest for the Golden Trophy1 to 4 players, co-opGolden Trophy cosmetic set items from the completion chest
Isle of Lost SkullsUp to 3 players, co-opTreasure chest drops and pirate themed cosmetics
Curse of the Crimson CauldronCo-op, hardest official questCrimson Cauldron cosmetics and the toughest quest completion in the game

Rec Center: The hub every account starts from, with doors sorted into categories including a Sports and PvP door that leads to Paintball, Rec Royale, Laser Tag, Bowling, Dodgeball, Disc Golf, Soccer and Paddleball. It is also where most players first meet the Maker Pen.

Rec Royale: The battle royale original, where the full weapon list appears as ground loot rather than as a chosen loadout. Solo and squad variants both run, and it mixes the paint weapons with the laser weapons in the same pool.

Quest for the Golden Trophy: The original co-op quest, running one to four players through nine acts of fantasy enemies to a final boss. Finishing all nine acts and the boss awards each player a chest containing an item from the Golden Trophy cosmetic sets.

Isle of Lost Skulls: A pirate themed co-op quest for up to three players, built around fighting through enemy filled levels and smashing breakable loot containers. Beating the final boss awards a treasure chest.

Curse of the Crimson Cauldron: The hardest and longest of the official quests, adding dynamic encounters with less predictable enemy behaviour alongside puzzle solving and environmental hazards. Bring a coordinated party rather than a random group.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Circuits V2 ports are colour coded for a reason: orange carries execution signals, blue carries floating point values, green carries integers and purple carries text. Matching colours is the quickest debugging pass on a board that will not fire.
  2. Every room has an ink budget for Maker Pen geometry. Build the game loop first and decorate afterwards, because a room that runs out of ink halfway through the decoration pass has to be rebuilt rather than trimmed.
  3. Tokens come from three places: real money, the Rec Room Plus subscription, and playing Rec Room Originals. Players who only enter user made rooms miss the free earning route entirely.
  4. Rec Room Studio requires an account at level 20 or above, published rooms and a clean moderation history. Those three gates are easier to clear with several small finished rooms than with one ambitious unfinished one.
  5. VR and screen players are in the same lobbies, and they are good at different things. Screen players generally do better with the Splat Shotgun and the Wand, while VR players get more out of the Bow and the Splat Sniper.
  6. Quest for the Golden Trophy runs nine acts before its final boss, so plan for a full session rather than a quick match. The completion chest only pays out after the boss falls.
  7. In Isle of Lost Skulls the breakable loot containers are worth the detour. Skipping them to rush the boss leaves the party under equipped for the final fight.
  8. Curse of the Crimson Cauldron mixes puzzle solving and environmental hazards into the combat, which is why it is the longest official quest. Voice chat coordination changes the outcome more than weapon choice does.
  9. Circuits V1 from February 2018 and Circuits V2 from 2021 are different systems. Tutorials written before 2021 describe wiring behaviour that no longer matches what you see in the Maker Pen menu.
  10. Creator earnings from selling rooms and items can be exchanged for real money, which makes the ink budget and Circuits skill ceiling a practical concern rather than a hobby one. Treat published room quality as the product it actually is.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Following Maker Pen tutorials from before December 2017. Saved Rooms did not exist until that update, so older guides describe a build workflow where nothing persisted.
  • Wiring Circuits V2 by trial and error instead of reading the port colours. A blue float output will not connect to a green integer input, and that refusal is the system telling you where the bug is.
  • Buying Tokens before playing any Rec Room Originals. Originals grant Tokens for playing them, and a few sessions of Paintball or Rec Royale cover a lot of cosmetics.
  • Taking the Bow into a quest as a screen player. The arc and draw mechanics are built around VR hand tracking, and the Wand covers the same ranged role far more comfortably on a controller.
  • Attempting Curse of the Crimson Cauldron with a random party on a first run. It is the longest and hardest official quest, with hazards and puzzles that punish a group that cannot communicate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rec Room free?

Yes. The game is free across PC, SteamVR, Meta Quest, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS, Android and PICO, with cross play between all of them. Tokens and the Rec Room Plus subscription are the paid layer.

Do I need a VR headset?

No. Screen players on phones, consoles and desktop share lobbies with VR players. Some weapons favour VR, such as the Bow and the Splat Sniper, while the Splat Shotgun and the Wand suit screen controls better.

What are the official Rec Room quests?

Quest for the Golden Trophy for one to four players across nine acts, Isle of Lost Skulls for up to three players, and Curse of the Crimson Cauldron, the longest and hardest of them with puzzles and environmental hazards.

How do I unlock Rec Room Studio?

Studio became free to creators who reach level 20 or above, have published rooms and hold a clean moderation history. It was announced in September 2022 as a Unity partnership and rolled out gradually from 2023.

Can creators make money from rooms?

Yes. Earnings from selling user generated content can be exchanged for real money, which is separate from the Tokens players spend on cosmetics and items.
