SCUM is a hardcore survival sim set on a prison island where contestants fight for a broadcast audience. Its standout feature is a metabolism system that tracks your vitamins, hydration and body composition in unusual depth.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (A0 and B0 coastal zones)
A0 and B0 coastal zones is the starting area where you learn fundamentals.
Level/Difficulty: Beginner Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades
What to Do in A0 and B0 coastal zones
- Learn Deep metabolism system. The game models calories, hydration, vitamins and weight, so your diet directly changes stamina, healing and carry capacity. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Combat raider as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Track your hydration and calories constantly, since a starving character loses stamina and heals slowly.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: AK family rifles or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Deep metabolism system fundamentals
- Combat raider selected and functional
- A0 and B0 coastal zones main content cleared
- Ready for Airfields
Phase 2: Early Game (Airfields)
High tier military zones with strong weapons, armor and heavy mech patrols.
Level/Difficulty: Geared players Key Rewards: Top weapons, armor, military ammo
What to Do in Airfields
- Work on Skill and attribute leveling. Strength, Constitution, Dexterity and Intelligence govern skills that improve through use, shaping crafting, combat and movement. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for AK family rifles if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Loot military zones in short crouched trips so you never get cornered by puppets and sentries.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Military bunkers.
- Consider whether Stealth scavenger might suit your playstyle better than Combat raider.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Skill and attribute leveling integrated into gameplay
- AK family rifles acquired
- Airfields fully cleared
- Ready for Military bunkers
Phase 3: Mid Game (Military bunkers)
Military bunkers is the mid-game skill check.
Level/Difficulty: Intermediate Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades
What to Do in Military bunkers
- Master Mech and puppet threats. Robotic sentries and infected puppets patrol the island, forcing stealth and careful routing around loot hot spots. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward M82 sniper. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Train skills through repeated use early, since attributes gate the crafting and movement you rely on later.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Looting and base building for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Mech and puppet threats mastered
- M82 sniper acquired or in progress
- Military bunkers fully cleared
- Ready for Towns and gas stations
Phase 4: Late Game (Towns and gas stations)
Towns and gas stations is the late-game area with advanced content.
Level/Difficulty: Advanced Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades
What to Do in Towns and gas stations
- Finalize your build. You should be running Stealth scavenger or Combat raider with optimized gear.
- M82 sniper should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Bury a backup stash away from your main base so a raid never wipes all your gear at once.
- Vehicle recovery and repair optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Forest hunting grounds.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- M82 sniper upgraded to max
- Towns and gas stations fully cleared
- Ready for Forest hunting grounds
Phase 5: Endgame (Forest hunting grounds)
Forest hunting grounds is the endgame zone with the hardest challenges.
Level/Difficulty: Expert Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades
What to Do in Forest hunting grounds
- Forest hunting grounds tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Cook and eat fresh meat quickly, because spoiled food causes sickness that drains your vitamins.
- The endgame loop: run Forest hunting grounds, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Vehicle nomad for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Vehicle recovery and repair mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Forest hunting grounds fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Ignoring the metabolism panel until starvation tanks stamina at the worst moment.
- Sprinting loudly through military zones and pulling every puppet at once.
- Keeping all loot in one base with no buried backup before a raid.
- Eating spoiled meat and triggering illness that wipes out vitamin levels.
- Leaving a repaired vehicle in the open where it advertises your position to raiders.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Track your hydration and calories constantly, since a starving character loses stamina and heals slowly.
- Loot military zones in short crouched trips so you never get cornered by puppets and sentries.
- Train skills through repeated use early, since attributes gate the crafting and movement you rely on later.
- Bury a backup stash away from your main base so a raid never wipes all your gear at once.
- Cook and eat fresh meat quickly, because spoiled food causes sickness that drains your vitamins.
