Sons of the Forest is Endnight Games' survival horror sequel set on a remote island where your helicopter crashes during a rescue mission. With your AI companion Kelvin and the potential ally Virginia, you must build shelter, find food, and survive against cannibals and mutants while uncovering the island's mysteries. The game features a fully simulated season system, advanced building mechanics, and 3D printer technology scattered across the island.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.
Quick Progression Summary
| Phase | Area | Focus | Build | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Start | Beach Camp | companion AI basics | Virginia Companion | 1-2 hours |
| 2. Early | Mountain Lake | 3D printer crafting mastery | Virginia Companion | 3-5 hours |
| 3. Mid | Cannibal Village | cave exploration + gear | Kelvin Commands or Virginia Companion | 5-10 hours |
| 4. Late | Underground Caves | Build optimization | Kelvin Commands | 5-10 hours |
| 5. Endgame | Snowy Mountains | Min-max | Kelvin Commands or Cave Explorer | Ongoing |
Phase 1: Getting Started — Beach Camp
The coastal area near your crash site. Provides easy access to water, fish, and basic materials. Good starting base location but lacks logs (few trees near beaches). Cannibals patrol less frequently along the coast.
Level/Difficulty: Day 1-5 Key Rewards: Fish, turtles (shells for water collectors), basic resources
What to Do in Beach Camp
- Learn companion AI. Kelvin is a deaf AI companion who follows orders via a notepad interface. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Virginia Companion as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
- Kelvin can chop trees and fish for you endlessly. Set him to tasks before exploring — you'll return to a pile of logs and fish.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Pistol or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand companion AI fundamentals
- Virginia Companion selected and functional
- Beach Camp main content cleared
- Ready for Mountain Lake
Phase 2: Early Game — Mountain Lake
An inland freshwater lake surrounded by forest. Ideal base location with access to fresh water, abundant trees, deer, and berries. Central location for reaching caves in any direction. The most popular base location.
Level/Difficulty: Day 3-15 Key Rewards: Fresh water, deer, berries, abundant logs, central location
What to Do in Mountain Lake
- Work on 3D printer crafting. 3D printers found in bunkers and caves print advanced items using Printer Resin. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Pistol if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Build near a stream for infinite water. Streams provide drinking water and are plentiful across the island.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Cannibal Village.
- Consider whether Kelvin Commands might suit your playstyle better than Virginia Companion.
Phase 2 Checklist
- 3D printer crafting integrated into gameplay
- Pistol acquired
- Mountain Lake fully cleared
- Ready for Cannibal Village
Phase 3: Mid Game — Cannibal Village
Hostile settlements found throughout the island. Contain loot like clothes, food, meds, and sometimes weapons. Raiding villages provides quick gear but triggers increased cannibal aggression in the area.
Level/Difficulty: Day 5+ Key Rewards: Clothing, food, meds, crafting materials, enemy skulls for effigies
What to Do in Cannibal Village
- Master cave exploration. Caves contain key story items, the best weapons, and connect to the bunker network. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Shotgun. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- 3D printers give arrows, flasks, and tech gear. Prioritize the grappling hook and arrows early. Printer Resin is limited, so plan your prints.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in seasons for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- cave exploration mastered
- Shotgun acquired or in progress
- Cannibal Village fully cleared
- Ready for Underground Caves
Phase 4: Late Game — Underground Caves
The cave system contains all key progression items (Rebreather, Rope Gun, Shovel, Katana). Each cave has unique enemies, from basic mutants to massive baby-shaped horrors. Multiple entries with different difficulty levels.
Level/Difficulty: Day 5+ (with preparation) Key Rewards: Rebreather, Rope Gun, Shovel, Katana, Crossbow, story progression
What to Do in Underground Caves
- Finalize your build. You should be running Kelvin Commands or Virginia Companion with optimized gear.
- Shotgun should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Virginia becomes a companion if you don't scare her. When she approaches your camp, don't look at her aggressively or aim weapons. After 3-4 visits, she'll stay permanently.
- shelter building optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Snowy Mountains.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Shotgun upgraded to max
- Underground Caves fully cleared
- Ready for Snowy Mountains
Phase 5: Endgame — Snowy Mountains
The northern mountainous region with cold temperature danger and stronger cannibal variants. Contains endgame cave entrances and story content. Requires warm clothing or constant fire management to survive.
Level/Difficulty: Day 20+ (endgame) Key Rewards: Endgame story bunkers, unique enemy encounters, final story content
What to Do in Snowy Mountains
- Snowy Mountains tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Log sleds carry multiple logs at once — build one immediately to speed up base construction. Kelvin can also fill log holders.
- The endgame loop: run Snowy Mountains, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Cave Explorer for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where shelter building mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Snowy Mountains fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Threatening Virginia when she first appears — pointing a weapon at her or acting aggressive causes her to flee permanently. Let her approach on her own terms.
- Not building a shelter before the first night — cannibals are more aggressive at night. Even a basic tarp shelter gives you a save point and rest.
- Entering caves without proper preparation — no flashlight, low health, no food or water. Caves are long, dark, and filled with enemies. Prepare fully before entering.
- Ignoring Kelvin's usefulness — many players let him follow aimlessly. Assign him tasks constantly: gather sticks, chop trees, catch fish, build walls.
- Building a base in the open without defensive walls — cannibal raids will destroy an undefended base quickly. Log walls and spike traps are essential.
