Detailed Builds Analysis

Kelvin Commands (S-Tier)

Maximize Kelvin's usefulness by ordering him to gather resources constantly. He can chop trees, collect sticks, catch fish, and fill log holders. Setting him to gather while you explore or build doubles your productivity. Keep him away from combat — he can die permanently.

Best with: Notepad (always equipped), clear gathering orders Stat focus: Keep Kelvin alive > efficient task assignment > base location with resources

Virginia Companion (A-Tier)

Virginia approaches your camp if you don't aim weapons at her. Over multiple visits, she gains trust and eventually equips weapons you leave on the ground near her. She's a powerful combat ally with the Shotgun or Pistol. GPS tracker lets you find her on the map.

Best with: Shotgun or Pistol for Virginia, GPS Tracker Stat focus: Patience (don't scare her) > weapon for her > GPS tracker

Solo Survival (B-Tier)

Playing without companions (or after they die) is the true survival horror experience. Resource management becomes critical. Build defensively with spike traps and walls. Focus on the Shotgun and Crossbow for combat efficiency. Night becomes terrifying.

Best with: Shotgun, Crossbow, full defensive base with traps Stat focus: Food/water security > base defense > weapons > exploration

Defensive Builder (A-Tier)

Focus on building an impenetrable base with log walls, spike traps, and elevated platforms. Defensive builders can survive any cannibal raid. Combine with Kelvin's log gathering for efficient construction. The tree house design is nearly unraidable by AI.

Best with: Log walls, stick traps, bone traps, elevated structures Stat focus: Log supply > defensive structure design > trap placement

Cave Explorer (A-Tier)

Prioritize cave exploration for story progression and best equipment. The Rebreather, Rope Gun, Shovel, and Katana are all found in caves. Cave runs require preparation — bring flashlight, meds, and food. Caves contain the game's most intense horror moments.

Best with: Flashlight, Rebreather, Rope Gun, full health supplies Stat focus: Equipment from caves > combat readiness > supplies for long expeditions

Equipment Analysis

Shotgun: Found in a grave on the western beach (dig with Shovel). Devastating at close range against cannibals and mutants. Limited ammo — found in crates and on bodies. The best weapon for cave encounters where enemies are close.

Pistol: Found in a life raft near the coast. Reliable mid-range weapon with good ammo availability. The silenced variant (Pistol Rail attachment) reduces cannibal alert. Give the extra to Virginia for a ranged combat ally.

Chainsaw: Found in a cave — primarily a resource gathering tool that cuts trees instantly. Also usable as a devastating melee weapon. Requires fuel. The fastest tree-cutting tool, making base building dramatically faster.

Katana: Found deep in a cave that requires the Rebreather and Rope Gun to access. The best melee weapon with fast attack speed and high damage. Lightweight and durable. The reward for successful cave exploration.

Crossbow: Found in a cave or crafted from materials. Silent ranged weapon with retrievable bolts. Perfect for stealth gameplay and picking off cannibals without alerting the camp. Lower DPS than the shotgun but infinite ammo if you retrieve bolts.

Meta Analysis

The current meta in Sons of the Forest centers on companion AI and 3D printer crafting. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one.

What's strong right now:

  • Kelvin Commands with Shotgun is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
  • cave exploration builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
  • Solo Survival remains essential for learning hard content.

What's underrated:

  • Virginia Companion is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
  • Chainsaw offers excellent performance for its investment level.

What's overhyped:

  • Pure Cave Explorer builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
