Stardew Valley Crafting Guide — Resources, Recipes & Priorities

Stardew Valley crafting guide covering resource gathering, upgrade priorities, crafting recipes, and efficiency tips.

Stardew Valley is ConcernedApe's farming simulation RPG where you inherit your grandfather's farm and build a life in a small rural town. Behind its cozy pixel art exterior lies an incredibly deep game with farming optimization, mine diving, fishing, relationships with 12 romanceable characters, and multiple endgame goals. The 1.6 update added a new farm type, festivals, and extensive new content. With over 30 million copies sold, it's the definitive modern farming sim.

Resource management and crafting determine how quickly your power scales. This guide covers what to prioritize, where to farm, and how to avoid wasting resources on the wrong upgrades.

Upgrade Path

Early Game (Pelican Town — The Mines)

  1. Upgrade your starting equipment to functional level
  2. Craft basic defensive gear
  3. Save specialty materials — you'll need them later
  4. Focus on Infinity Blade once accessible

Mid Game (Skull Cavern)

  1. Push Infinity Blade to mid-level upgrades
  2. Start collecting materials for Galaxy Sword
  3. Craft situational consumables for boss fights
  4. Upgrade build-specific gear pieces

Late Game (Ginger Island — Calico Desert)

  1. Max out Galaxy Sword — this is your top priority
  2. Complete your build's core gear set
  3. Craft endgame consumables
  4. Optional: upgrade secondary equipment for variety

Crafting Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Spreading upgrades across multiple equipment — Focus one weapon to max before diversifying.
  2. Hoarding materials — Use them. The game provides enough if you farm efficiently.
  3. Upgrading the wrong gear — Check our builds guide before investing.
  4. Ignoring Skull Cavern farming — This area has the best resource-to-time ratio in mid-game.
  5. Crafting consumables too early — Save specialty materials for late-game recipes.

Resource Efficiency Tips

  • Plant Parsnips on Day 1 Spring for fast money and Farming XP. Then buy Strawberry Seeds at the Egg Festival (Day 13) and plant them for Spring profit.
  • Farm Skull Cavern during mid-game for the best return on time
  • Check the walkthrough to know when each resource becomes available
  • Match your farming route to your build — some classes farm faster in certain areas
