Stranded Deep puts you in the aftermath of a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean, stranded with nothing but a life raft and a survival knife. You must island-hop across a procedurally generated archipelago, gathering resources, crafting tools, and building shelters while managing hunger, thirst, and health. The game features three massive boss creatures guarding the parts needed to build an escape vehicle. With realistic survival mechanics including sunstroke, poison, and bleeding, Stranded Deep offers a tense castaway experience that rewards careful planning and resource management.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Starting Island
Your crash site with the life raft containing a compass, watch, and survival knife. The starting island has basic palm trees, rocks, and usually a few crates with starting supplies. Establish a Water Still immediately and a basic shelter before exploring. The life raft itself provides emergency shelter.
Level/Difficulty: Day 1-3 Key Rewards: Compass, Watch, Survival Knife from life raft, basic starter resources
What to Do in Starting Island
- Learn raft building. Rafts are your primary transportation between islands. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Base Builder as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
- Craft a Water Still immediately — dehydration kills faster than hunger. A Water Still uses Palm Fronds and Lashing to produce fresh water from fibrous leaves. One still isn't enough long-term; build two.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Crude Bow or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand raft building fundamentals
- Base Builder selected and functional
- Starting Island main content cleared
- Ready for Deep Sea
Phase 2: Early Game — Deep Sea
The open ocean between islands contains sharks (including Tiger Sharks and Great Whites), whales, and underwater resources. Shipwrecks on the ocean floor hold crucial salvage items (motors, electrical parts, gyrocopter components). Diving shipwrecks is dangerous due to shark aggression near wrecks.
Level/Difficulty: Day 3+ (with diving gear) Key Rewards: Shipwreck salvage (motors, electrical parts, Speargun), shark leather
What to Do in Deep Sea
- Work on island resources. Each island has finite resources — trees don't regrow (except palm saplings), rocks don't respawn, and most crafting materials are one-time harvests. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Crude Bow if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Palm Fronds regrow but coconuts don't — don't waste coconuts on eating when you need them for crafting. Use coconut halves as water containers after drinking the water inside.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Aircraft Carrier.
- Consider whether Island Hopper might suit your playstyle better than Base Builder.
Phase 2 Checklist
- island resources integrated into gameplay
- Crude Bow acquired
- Deep Sea fully cleared
- Ready for Aircraft Carrier
Phase 3: Mid Game — Aircraft Carrier
A static landmark featuring a massive wrecked aircraft carrier. It contains unique loot including ship parts, crates, and components not found on regular islands. The interior has multiple levels to explore. One of the few guaranteed locations in every generated world.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-game (with raft and supplies) Key Rewards: Unique salvage components, rare crates, high-tier building materials
What to Do in Aircraft Carrier
- Master boss creatures. Three unique boss creatures must be defeated to craft the gyrocopter escape vehicle: the Megalodon (giant shark), the Moray Eel (giant eel in a cave), and the Great Abaia (giant squid). This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Refined Spear. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- The Compass and Watch are in the life raft you start on. Many players miss these items. The compass helps navigate between islands, and the watch tracks time for sun exposure management.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in crafting progression for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- boss creatures mastered
- Refined Spear acquired or in progress
- Aircraft Carrier fully cleared
- Ready for Boss Islands
Phase 4: Late Game — Boss Islands
Three specific islands each host a boss creature. The Megalodon circles its island in deep water, the Moray Eel hides in an underwater cave system, and the Great Abaia lurks in deep trenches. Each boss drops a trophy required for the gyrocopter. Prepare extensively before engaging.
Level/Difficulty: Late-game (refined weapons, max health, full supplies) Key Rewards: Boss trophies (required for escape), unique crafting materials
What to Do in Boss Islands
- Finalize your build. You should be running Island Hopper or Base Builder with optimized gear.
- Refined Spear should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Save before fighting bosses — they can one-shot you with full health. The Megalodon fight requires fighting from your raft, the Moray Eel fight is underwater, and the Great Abaia fight is in deep water. Each requires different preparation.
- health management optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Buoy Balls.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Refined Spear upgraded to max
- Boss Islands fully cleared
- Ready for Buoy Balls
Phase 5: Endgame — Buoy Balls
Floating orange buoy balls scattered across the ocean serve as the best raft buoyancy modules — better than tires or barrels. Collecting 4-6 buoy balls creates an extremely stable raft base. They're visible from distance on the water surface, making them easy to spot during sailing.
Level/Difficulty: Early-game (while exploring) Key Rewards: Buoyancy modules for stable rafts
What to Do in Buoy Balls
- Buoy Balls tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- The Smoker preserves meat indefinitely — cook raw meat in the Smoker instead of a Campfire. Smoked meat never spoils, giving you permanent food supplies for long sailing trips.
- The endgame loop: run Buoy Balls, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Speedrunner for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where health management mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Buoy Balls fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Cutting down all trees on the starting island — trees (except palm saplings) don't regrow, and you'll need wood for fires, tools, and building throughout the game. Spread your harvesting across multiple islands.
- Drinking coconut water repeatedly — two coconuts in a row cause diarrhea, which accelerates dehydration and hunger. Space out coconut consumption or build a Water Still for safe drinking water.
- Swimming near islands without checking for sharks — sharks patrol island shores and attack without warning. Always approach new islands by raft and scan the water before diving.
- Not saving before boss fights — the three boss creatures can kill experienced players. Without a save, death means restarting from your last shelter sleep save, potentially losing hours of preparation.
- Eating raw meat instead of cooking it — raw meat has a chance to cause food poisoning, which drains health and hunger simultaneously. Always cook or smoke meat before eating.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Craft a Water Still immediately — dehydration kills faster than hunger. A Water Still uses Palm Fronds and Lashing to produce fresh water from fibrous leaves. One still isn't enough long-term; build two.
- Palm Fronds regrow but coconuts don't — don't waste coconuts on eating when you need them for crafting. Use coconut halves as water containers after drinking the water inside.
- The Compass and Watch are in the life raft you start on. Many players miss these items. The compass helps navigate between islands, and the watch tracks time for sun exposure management.
- Save before fighting bosses — they can one-shot you with full health. The Megalodon fight requires fighting from your raft, the Moray Eel fight is underwater, and the Great Abaia fight is in deep water. Each requires different preparation.
- The Smoker preserves meat indefinitely — cook raw meat in the Smoker instead of a Campfire. Smoked meat never spoils, giving you permanent food supplies for long sailing trips.
