The Spell Brigade drops one to four wizards into a survivors-like arena where spells fire on their own and friendly fire stays switched on. Bolt Blaster Games shipped Early Access on 16 September 2024 and the 1.0 build on 29 April 2026, with seven elements and ten dual element pairings. Three finished realms plus a work in progress fourth carry every run.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Reginald
Reginald is a top-performing option in The Spell Brigade.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Magic Missile | The plain starter projectile that tracks the nearest target and scales cleanly with cooldown reduction. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Friendly fire between wizards | Every spell your squad casts hurts teammates as well as demons, so a fully augmented Falling Stars build can wipe your own party. |
How to Play Reginald
Reginald focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Magic Missile does the damage and Friendly fire between wizards keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Sun Mage
Sun Mage is a strong option in The Spell Brigade.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Astral Orbs | Reginald's signature spell, orbs that circle the caster with plus 25 percent spell size and 12 percent lower cooldown. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Elemental infusions on every spell | Each spell can carry Lightning, Fire, Acid, Wildfire, Ice, Dark or Plasma. |
How to Play Sun Mage
Sun Mage focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Astral Orbs with Elemental infusions on every spell and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Star Mage
Star Mage is a strong option in The Spell Brigade.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Falling Stars | Star Mage's opener, dropping stars across a wide zone with a 12 percent cooldown bonus attached. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Ten dual element pairings | Stacking two elements produces a named result: Acid plus Fire gives Brimstone splash explosions, Ice plus Fire gives Frostbite knockback, and doubling Dark gives Void corruption that spreads exponentially. |
How to Play Star Mage
Star Mage focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Ten dual element pairings covers the gap Falling Stars leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Ludwig
Ludwig is a specialized option in The Spell Brigade.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Arcane Broadsword | Ludwig's melee arc, 25 percent larger and 8 percent faster to recharge than the baseline. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Revive Cores for downed allies | A downed wizard leaves a Revive Core that a teammate detonates to bring them back, and the blast also damages the pack standing on it. |
How to Play Ludwig
Ludwig focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Revive Cores for downed allies rather than raw numbers, and Arcane Broadsword is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Hatti
Hatti is a specialized option in The Spell Brigade.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Solar Pulse | Sun Mage's expanding burst, carrying a 33 percent spell size bonus straight out of the gate. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Gold funded Enchantments in the lobby | Gold earned per match buys permanent Enchantments across five tiers, each strengthened up to five times, with a mastery bonus once a line finishes level 5. |
How to Play Hatti
Hatti focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Solar Pulse and Gold funded Enchantments in the lobby pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Sun Mage: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Reginald once you understand core mechanics and have access to Magic Missile
- Keep a Star Mage setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Hatti for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Lightning is rated the strongest element in the 1.0 tier lists because it pierces a line of enemies and adds a Thunder strike on the first hit. If you are unsure what to infuse, take Lightning twice and let the doubled version carry.
- Friendly fire applies to every spell in the game, so in four player games agree who holds the middle. Falling Stars and Solar Pulse builds are the ones most likely to delete a teammate by accident.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
