Titanfall 2 is Respawn Entertainment's 2016 shooter, published by Electronic Arts and added to Steam on 18 June 2020 after years as an Origin exclusive. It runs on two layers at once: a Pilot who wall runs, slides and double jumps through the level, and a Titan, a forty foot mech that drops from orbit when your meter fills. The nine mission campaign puts rifleman Jack Cooper with a Vanguard class Titan called BT-7274 and runs roughly six to seven hours, including Effect and Cause, a mission that hands you a device for switching between two time periods mid firefight. Multiplayer is six versus six across modes such as Attrition, Bounty Hunt and Amped Hardpoint.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (The Pilot's Gauntlet)

The campaign's training course and a timed obstacle run with a global leaderboard attached. It is the best place in the game to learn wall running, sliding and double jumping, because failure costs nothing and the clock tells you exactly how much you improved.

Level/Difficulty: Campaign mission 1 Key Rewards: Movement fundamentals, leaderboard times, first Pilot loadout

What to Do in The Pilot's Gauntlet

  1. Learn Wall running and slide hopping. A Pilot can run along any wall for a few seconds, double jump, and slide downhill to gain speed that carries into the next jump. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Scorch as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Speed in Titanfall 2 is preserved rather than granted, so chain a wall run into a slide into a jump and never come to a stop on flat ground.
  4. Acquire your first weapons upgrade: Volt SMG or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Wall running and slide hopping fundamentals
  • Scorch selected and functional
  • The Pilot's Gauntlet main content cleared
  • Ready for Effect and Cause

Phase 2: Early Game (Effect and Cause)

The fifth campaign mission and the one people remember, built around a wrist device that snaps you between the facility's ruined present and its working past. Enemies, walls and floors all change with the switch, so a blocked route in one era is open in the other.

Level/Difficulty: Campaign mission 5 Key Rewards: Time shift device, Ion Titan loadout, a Pilot helmet collectible

What to Do in Effect and Cause

  1. Work on Titan meter and the orbital drop. Your Titan builds on a timer that damage, kills and objective work all accelerate, then drops from orbit onto a spot you mark. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Volt SMG if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Call your Titan behind cover or on a rooftop rather than in an open street, because the drop itself is announced and enemy Titans will be aiming at it.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to The Beacon.
  5. Consider whether Ion might suit your playstyle better than Scorch.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Titan meter and the orbital drop integrated into gameplay
  • Volt SMG acquired
  • Effect and Cause fully cleared
  • Ready for The Beacon

Phase 3: Mid Game (The Beacon)

The sixth mission, set around an IMC interstellar communications beacon and its support facilities. It is the most vertical stretch of the campaign and where the Ronin Titan loadout is found.

Level/Difficulty: Campaign mission 6 Key Rewards: Ronin Titan loadout, Pilot helmets, large scale Titan combat

What to Do in The Beacon

  1. Master Titan cores and dash meters. Each Titan has a core ability that charges through combat and changes the fight when it fires: Ion has Laser Core, Scorch has Flame Core, Northstar has Flight Core, Ronin has Sword Core, Tone has Salvo Core and Legion has Smart Core. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward R-201 Carbine. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Rodeo an enemy Titan for its battery, then hand that battery to a friendly Titan for a health chunk and a temporary shield rather than keeping it.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Rodeo and battery swapping for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Titan cores and dash meters mastered
  • R-201 Carbine acquired or in progress
  • The Beacon fully cleared
  • Ready for Angel City

Phase 4: Late Game (Angel City)

A multiplayer map rebuilt from the first Titanfall and released free after launch. Its mix of narrow streets, interior rooms and rooftop routes makes it the map most often used to teach new players how the two layers of combat interact.

Level/Difficulty: Multiplayer, all levels Key Rewards: Balanced Pilot and Titan lanes, strong rooftop wall running routes

What to Do in Angel City

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Ion or Scorch with optimized gear.
  2. R-201 Carbine should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. The Grapple is not only a movement tool, it also pulls light targets toward you and can redirect your fall mid air to break a sniper's lead.
  4. Pilot tacticals and kits optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Boomtown.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • R-201 Carbine upgraded to max
  • Angel City fully cleared
  • Ready for Boomtown

Phase 5: Endgame (Boomtown)

An industrial multiplayer map with tight interiors and long exterior lanes running between them. Scorch and Ronin thrive inside the buildings while Northstar and Tone own the open ground, which makes it a good map for learning Titan matchups.

Level/Difficulty: Multiplayer, all levels Key Rewards: Enclosed Titan duels, indoor Pilot routes, clear sniping lanes

What to Do in Boomtown

  1. Boomtown tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Ion draws its shield, its Laser Shot and its Tripwire from one shared energy bar, so firing the Splitter Rifle carelessly leaves you without a Vortex Shield.
  3. The endgame loop: run Boomtown, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Tone for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Pilot tacticals and kits mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Boomtown fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Playing the multiplayer like a standard shooter by walking and holding angles, which throws away the movement advantage the entire game is built on.
  • Dropping a Titan in the open the moment the meter fills, then losing it to two enemy Titans before it has fired a shot.
  • Rodeoing an enemy Titan and keeping the battery, when handing it to a teammate is worth far more than the small boost you get from it.
  • Picking Scorch on open maps like Exoplanet, where the fire abilities never reach and the chassis has no ranged answer.
  • Skipping the campaign because the game is known for multiplayer, which misses Effect and Cause and a six to seven hour run widely rated among the best shooter campaigns of its decade.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Speed in Titanfall 2 is preserved rather than granted, so chain a wall run into a slide into a jump and never come to a stop on flat ground.
  2. Call your Titan behind cover or on a rooftop rather than in an open street, because the drop itself is announced and enemy Titans will be aiming at it.
  3. Rodeo an enemy Titan for its battery, then hand that battery to a friendly Titan for a health chunk and a temporary shield rather than keeping it.
  4. The Grapple is not only a movement tool, it also pulls light targets toward you and can redirect your fall mid air to break a sniper's lead.
  5. Ion draws its shield, its Laser Shot and its Tripwire from one shared energy bar, so firing the Splitter Rifle carelessly leaves you without a Vortex Shield.
