Tower of Babel: Survivors of Chaos is NANOO's hand drawn survivors-like with Diablo style loot attached. It spent a year in Early Access from 19 May 2025 before the 1.0 build arrived on 26 May 2026 with five heroes. Every run climbs a numbered floor of the tower, and everything you pick up drops into a stash rather than onto your character.

Combat in Tower of Babel: Survivors of Chaos rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Auto attacking wave survival

Your character attacks on its own while you handle movement and dodging. Enemies pour in from every edge of the screen and drop XP shards when they die.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Three upgrade picks per level

Each level up offers three random choices from new skills, stat boosts and buffs to skills you already run. There is no reroll, so build plans have to bend around whatever appears.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Loot banks to the stash

Gear cannot be equipped during a run. Everything you collect goes into the stash for the next attempt, which means a failed run still leaves you richer than you started.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Runes, gems and sockets

Gear carries sockets that accept runes, gems and jewels, with an Alchemist handling the crafting side. This is where a build stops being generic and starts being yours.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Floor gated item levels

Every floor and difficulty combination has its own item level band, and Floor 1 on Normal drops item level 1 to 3 gear. Farming the right floor matters far more than farming for longer.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Auto attacking wave survival + Three upgrade picks per level

Your character attacks on its own while you handle movement and dodging. When combined with Three upgrade picks per level, each level up offers three random choices from new skills, stat boosts and buffs to skills you already run. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Loot banks to the stash + Runes, gems and sockets

Gear cannot be equipped during a run. Paired with Runes, gems and sockets, gear carries sockets that accept runes, gems and jewels, with an alchemist handling the crafting side. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Floor gated item levels as a Multiplier

Every floor and difficulty combination has its own item level band, and Floor 1 on Normal drops item level 1 to 3 gear. Farming the right floor matters far more than farming for longer. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Floor gated item levels optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Auto attacking wave survival for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Three upgrade picks per level and Loot banks to the stash for combo damage
  4. Use Runes, gems and sockets to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Read the floor header before you drop in. It lists difficulty, item level range, timer and reward modifiers, which tells you straight away whether this is a progression push or a farming trip.
  3. Position using Auto attacking wave survival to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Three upgrade picks per level: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Floor 1 but will get you killed in The camp.
