War Robots is a free to play 6v6 third person mech shooter from MY.GAMES, originally a Pixonic mobile title that arrived on Steam on 5 April 2018 and still shares matchmaking with the phone version. Matches run ten minutes and are decided by beacon control rather than kills, which means a light robot that runs and captures often does more for the score than a heavy that farms damage. The hangar carries more than fifty robots plus a separate Titan class, each with its own ability, and everything can be pushed through the MK2 and MK3 upgrade tiers using two different currencies and Upgrade Tokens. Steam reviews sit around 59 percent positive, and almost every negative one names the same thing: progression is slow unless you spend, and the newest robots are noticeably stronger than the ones you already own. Read the ability text before you commit resources, because in War Robots an ability decides a robot's role far more than its hardpoint count does.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Fenrir
Fenrir is a top-performing option in War Robots.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Nucleon | A heavy plasma weapon from the same family as the Atomizer and Quarker, built around sustained plasma output rather than a single burst. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Beacon control in Domination and Beacon Rush | Domination is the core 6v6 mode, with two ways to win inside the ten minute limit: hold more beacons than the enemy so their score bleeds away, or destroy every enemy robot. |
How to Play Fenrir
Fenrir focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Nucleon does the damage and Beacon control in Domination and Beacon Rush keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Skyros
Skyros is a strong option in War Robots.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Blaze | The pyro family flamethrower style weapon, punishing at short range and almost worthless past it. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Robot abilities and Aegis class shields | Every robot has one signature ability and it, not the hardpoint layout, defines how the machine plays. |
How to Play Skyros
Skyros focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair Blaze with Robot abilities and Aegis class shields and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Ravana
Ravana is a strong option in War Robots.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Scourge | An explosive family weapon alongside the Calamity, Cyclone and Cataclysm, throwing area damage that does not need pinpoint aim. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | MK2 and MK3 upgrade tiers | A robot or weapon climbs through normal levels first, then can be enhanced to MK2, which resets it to level 1 with roughly a two percent power increase and a fresh level ladder. |
How to Play Ravana
Ravana focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: MK2 and MK3 upgrade tiers covers the gap Scourge leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Nightingale
Nightingale is a specialized option in War Robots.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Redeemer | A close range heavy energy weapon effective out to about 350 metres, comparable to the Taran but with more than twice the punch in a single burst. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Titans and Platinum | Titans are a separate, much larger class of machine that you deploy once per match after filling a bar. |
How to Play Nightingale
Nightingale focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Titans and Platinum rather than raw numbers, and Redeemer is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Dagon
Dagon is a specialized option in War Robots.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Devastator | A heavy hardpoint weapon that trades range for raw output, and one of the guns that has an Ultimate Edition variant alongside Ultimate Blaze, Ultimate Redeemer and Ultimate Scourge. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Pilots, drones and modules | Pilots attach to a specific robot and grant passive skills that change how the ability behaves; drones sit alongside the loadout and provide their own passive and active effects; modules fill active and passive slots with things like extra durability, repair or defence. |
How to Play Dagon
Dagon focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Devastator and Pilots, drones and modules pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Skyros: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Fenrir once you understand core mechanics and have access to Nucleon
- Keep a Ravana setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Dagon for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Domination is decided by beacon score inside ten minutes, so capturing two beacons in the first twenty seconds is worth more than any duel you win later in the match.
- Aegis class shields on Fenrir, Skyros, Blitz, Bulwark, Cerberus, Jaeger, Typhon and Erebus block every weapon type except melee, so keep at least one melee option in the hangar or those robots will simply walk through you.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
