Egosoft released X4 on 30 November 2018 as the first X game where you can fly every ship, walk around stations and build stations of your own module by module. Ships come in four sizes, with S and M built and sold at Wharves while L and XL come from Shipyards, which decides where a damaged fleet can actually be repaired. Expansions have widened the map considerably since launch, adding the Split, the Terrans, the pirate space around Avarice and the Boron kingdom.

X4: Foundations features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Argon Prime: Starting Area

The Argon Federation core sector and the usual first stop for new players. It holds shipyard and wharf facilities, plenty of trade traffic and faction representatives who will buy the sector data you gather on your first exploration loop.

What to Do Here

Grand Exchange: Early Game

The Teladi commercial hub, thick with trade stations and the widest variety of wares in one place. Prices here are usually the reference point you compare every other sector against when planning routes.

What to Do Here

Hatikvah's Choice: Mid Game

Home space of the Hatikvah Free League, a small faction that sits between larger powers and hands out plot missions early. It is a useful reputation target because its licences are cheap relative to the major factions.

Trinity Sanctum: Late Game

Paranid territory under the Holy Order of the Pontifex, and a good example of how faction politics gate your options. Reputation earned with one Paranid power tends to cost you standing with its rival.

AttributeDetail
Difficulty20 to 60 hours
Key RewardsParanid ships and weapons, Paranid blueprints
Recommended BuildS class scouts and fighters
Key EquipmentPulse Laser

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Pulse Laser should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Faction reputation gating mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Mars.

Mars: Endgame

Terran Protectorate space added by the Cradle of Humanity expansion, with its own technology tree that does not interoperate with Commonwealth equipment. The Terran Cadet start begins here and starts you with strong Terran reputation and poor standing with everyone else.

AttributeDetail
DifficultyTerran Cadet start onwards
Key RewardsTerran hulls, Terran weapons, Sol system access
Recommended BuildS class scouts and fighters
Key EquipmentPulse Laser

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with XL class carriers and auxiliaries for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Argon Prime → Grand Exchange → Hatikvah's Choice → Trinity Sanctum → Mars. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
