This X4: Foundations tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.

Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Equipment Analysis

Pulse Laser: The all round S and M weapon, cheap to buy, accurate and effective against both shields and hull without excelling at either. It is the correct default for a first fighter and for automated wings you will not be flying yourself.

Beam Emitter: A continuous beam with perfect tracking, which makes it the answer to fast targets that ordinary projectiles cannot lead. Damage per second is modest, so it is a support weapon rather than a main gun.

Plasma Cannon: Slow, heavy projectiles with punishing hull damage and terrible tracking against anything that moves quickly. Mounted on L class ships it is the main tool for stripping station modules.

Shard Battery: A Split weapon that fires a wide spread of projectiles for very high close range damage, at the cost of being nearly useless past short range. It rewards aggressive flying and punishes anyone who tries to snipe with it.

Torpedo Launcher: Heavy guided ordnance that ignores much of a target's turret defence and does enormous damage to stations and capital hulls. Torpedoes must be manufactured or bought, so a torpedo fleet needs a supply line behind it.

Meta Analysis

The current meta in X4: Foundations centers on Four ship size classes from S to XL and Station building with modules and plots. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.

What's strong right now:

  • S class scouts and fighters with Pulse Laser is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
  • Crew skill and pilot stars builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
  • M class miners and traders remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.

What's underrated:

  • M class corvettes and frigates is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
  • Plasma Cannon offers excellent performance for its investment level.

What's overhyped:

  • Pure XL class carriers and auxiliaries builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
