PlayWithFurcifer put Backpack Battles into Early Access on 8 March 2024 and shipped version 1.0 on 13 June 2025, with IndieArk publishing. You buy items in a shop phase, arrange them inside a grid backpack where placement decides what triggers, and the fight then resolves on its own against another player's saved backpack. Seven classes each carry five subclasses, and more than 500 items exist across six rarities from Common up to Unique.
Boss fights are where Backpack Battles tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.
Boss Difficulty Overview
| Area | Difficulty | Recommended Build | Key Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Easy | Reaper | Vampiric Gloves |
| Gold | Moderate | Reaper | Vampiric Gloves |
| Diamond | Hard | Ranger | Falcon Blade |
| Grandmaster | Very Hard | Ranger | Falcon Blade |
| Grandma | Extreme | Ranger | Falcon Blade |
Bronze Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: First ranked runs, rounds 1 to 6 Recommended build: Reaper with Vampiric Gloves
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Every item occupies a specific shape inside your bag, and several items only apply their bonus to whatever sits directly next to them. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use Backpack grid placement to create safe windows.
- Vampiric Gloves is enough to handle everything here.
Gold Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Mid ladder, rounds 4 to 10 Recommended build: Reaper with Vampiric Gloves
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Crafting recipes from adjacent items. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Crafting recipes from adjacent items is critical for these fights.
- Farm Vampiric Gloves upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Reaper if your current setup isn't working.
Diamond Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Upper ladder, rounds 3 onward Recommended build: Ranger with Falcon Blade
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both Backpack grid placement and Class and subclass selection mastery.
- Falcon Blade makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
Grandmaster Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Top ladder, full length runs Recommended build: Ranger with Falcon Blade
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- Falcon Blade at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Grandma Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Endgame ladder Recommended build: Ranger with Falcon Blade
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Falcon Blade trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use Backpack grid placement: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
