PlayWithFurcifer put Backpack Battles into Early Access on 8 March 2024 and shipped version 1.0 on 13 June 2025, with IndieArk publishing. You buy items in a shop phase, arrange them inside a grid backpack where placement decides what triggers, and the fight then resolves on its own against another player's saved backpack. Seven classes each carry five subclasses, and more than 500 items exist across six rarities from Common up to Unique.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Falcon Blade | Legendary sword crafted from a Hero Sword and two Gloves of Haste. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Backpack grid placement | Every item occupies a specific shape inside your bag, and several items only apply their bonus to whatever sits directly next to them. |
How to Play Ranger
Ranger focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Falcon Blade does the damage and Backpack grid placement keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Reaper
Reaper is a strong option in Backpack Battles.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Vampiric Gloves | Godly gloves crafted from a Blood Amulet and Gloves of Haste. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Crafting recipes from adjacent items | Placing the right components touching each other offers a craft prompt, so Wooden Sword plus two Whetstones becomes a Hero Sword, and that Hero Sword plus two Gloves of Haste becomes the Legendary Falcon Blade. |
How to Play Reaper
Reaper focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Vampiric Gloves with Crafting recipes from adjacent items and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Berserker
Berserker is a strong option in Backpack Battles.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Manathirst | Legendary weapon crafted from a Hungry Blade and a Mana Orb, aimed at bags that generate and spend mana rather than raw attack speed. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Class and subclass selection | You start as Ranger, Reaper, Berserker, Pyromancer, Mage, Adventurer or Engineer, and each has five subclasses locked behind a specific item. |
How to Play Berserker
Berserker focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Class and subclass selection covers the gap Manathirst leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Pyromancer
Pyromancer is a specialized option in Backpack Battles.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Bloodthorne | Crafted from a Hungry Blade and a Thorn Whip, sitting between straight melee damage and the vampiric damage type. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Shop rounds and gold economy | Each shop phase gives you gold to spend, and every item on offer has a 10 percent chance of appearing on sale at half its cost rounded up. |
How to Play Pyromancer
Pyromancer focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Shop rounds and gold economy rather than raw numbers, and Bloodthorne is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Engineer
Engineer is a specialized option in Backpack Battles.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Critwood Staff | Ranger craft from a Magic Staff and an Acorn Collar, turning the nature item line into a crit engine. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Auto-resolved matches against saved backpacks | You never fight a live opponent in real time. |
How to Play Engineer
Engineer focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Critwood Staff and Auto-resolved matches against saved backpacks pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Reaper: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Ranger once you understand core mechanics and have access to Falcon Blade
- Keep a Berserker setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Engineer for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Learn the four or five craft chains you actually want before you buy anything. Wooden Sword plus two Whetstones makes a Hero Sword, and that plus two Gloves of Haste makes a Falcon Blade, so a Whetstone in round one is a plan rather than filler.
- Every shop item has a 10 percent chance of showing at half price rounded up, and everything sells back at half price. Buying a discounted item you do not need and reselling it later costs you nothing, so grab sale components you might craft with.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
