PlayWithFurcifer put Backpack Battles into Early Access on 8 March 2024 and shipped version 1.0 on 13 June 2025, with IndieArk publishing. You buy items in a shop phase, arrange them inside a grid backpack where placement decides what triggers, and the fight then resolves on its own against another player's saved backpack. Seven classes each carry five subclasses, and more than 500 items exist across six rarities from Common up to Unique.
Backpack Battles features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bronze | First ranked runs, rounds 1 to 6 | Rating gains from simply completing crafts other players are missing | Reaper |
| 2 | Gold | Mid ladder, rounds 4 to 10 | The point where item placement starts mattering more than item quality | Reaper |
| 3 | Diamond | Upper ladder, rounds 3 onward | Consistent matchups against fully realised builds, which is the fastest way to learn counters | Ranger |
| 4 | Grandmaster | Top ladder, full length runs | Matchups against the current meta bags rather than experiments | Ranger |
| 5 | Grandma | Endgame ladder | The ceiling rank, reached only with builds that survive bad shop rolls | Ranger |
Bronze: Starting Area
The entry rank, where most opponents are running whatever the shop handed them with no crafting plan. Straight stat items and a single crafted weapon are usually enough to climb out.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | First ranked runs, rounds 1 to 6 |
| Key Rewards | Rating gains from simply completing crafts other players are missing |
| Recommended Build | Reaper |
| Key Equipment | Vampiric Gloves |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Backpack grid placement. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Gold.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Gold: Early Game
Opponents now commit to a subclass and finish one real craft chain. Losing here usually means your bag had good items in bad positions rather than bad items.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid ladder, rounds 4 to 10 |
| Key Rewards | The point where item placement starts mattering more than item quality |
| Recommended Build | Reaper |
| Key Equipment | Vampiric Gloves |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Crafting recipes from adjacent items. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Vampiric Gloves if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Diamond.
Diamond: Mid Game
Bags are optimised by round five and nobody wastes a shop phase. You are punished for buying items that do not feed a craft, and for leaving unused cells in the bag.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Upper ladder, rounds 3 onward |
| Key Rewards | Consistent matchups against fully realised builds, which is the fastest way to learn counters |
| Recommended Build | Ranger |
| Key Equipment | Vampiric Gloves |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Falcon Blade becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Class and subclass selection for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Grandmaster: Late Game
Near the top of the ladder, where opponents have Godly and Unique items assembled and every adjacency is deliberate. Winning here means reading the sale rolls correctly and pivoting mid-run.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Top ladder, full length runs |
| Key Rewards | Matchups against the current meta bags rather than experiments |
| Recommended Build | Ranger |
| Key Equipment | Falcon Blade |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Falcon Blade should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Auto-resolved matches against saved backpacks mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Grandma.
Grandma: Endgame
The highest rank in the game and the joke at the top of the eight-tier ladder that runs Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, Grandma. Reaching it takes a build you can execute regardless of what the shop offers.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Endgame ladder |
| Key Rewards | The ceiling rank, reached only with builds that survive bad shop rolls |
| Recommended Build | Ranger |
| Key Equipment | Falcon Blade |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Engineer for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Bronze → Gold → Diamond → Grandmaster → Grandma. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
