Battlefield V arrived in November 2018 with eight maps, among them Narvik, Rotterdam and Fjell 652, and DICE closed content development in June 2020 after six Tides of War chapters. It is the only Battlefield where every soldier carries a hammer and can raise sandbags, tank traps and repaired walls at marked build points. Ammunition is deliberately thin under the attrition system, so a squad without a Support runs dry long before it runs out of targets.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Build the sandbag line on a flag before the first contact rather than after it collapses

Build the sandbag line on a flag before the first contact rather than after it collapses. Support raises fortifications noticeably faster than other kits, and a finished wall changes how that objective is fought over for the rest of the round.

2. Attrition deploys you with partial reserve ammunition, so walk over every corpse on your route to collect the small drops they leave

Attrition deploys you with partial reserve ammunition, so walk over every corpse on your route to collect the small drops they leave. Standing beside a Support ammo crate for a few seconds is the only way to fill completely.

3. Any class can revive a squadmate, but the animation is long enough to get both of you killed in the open

Any class can revive a squadmate, but the animation is long enough to get both of you killed in the open. Approach the body from the side that has cover, and use a Medic smoke grenade rifle if the body sits on the objective itself.

4. Squad points are pooled, not personal

Squad points are pooled, not personal. If the leader icon is free, take it, because an idle leader means nobody in the squad ever sees a supply canister, a Churchill Crocodile or the V-1 rocket.

5. Bipods are a real mechanic, not decoration

Bipods are a real mechanic, not decoration. Deploying a Bren Gun or an MG42 on a windowsill collapses vertical recoil, and the medium machine guns are close to unusable while standing.

6. Weapon specializations are permanent per gun and cost proficiency levels to reach

Weapon specializations are permanent per gun and cost proficiency levels to reach. On automatics take the recoil branch before the range branch, because a controllable gun out performs a hard hitting one you cannot hold on target.

7. Health regenerates only up to the top of the segment you are currently in

Health regenerates only up to the top of the segment you are currently in. Bandage from your own kit or a Medic pouch before pushing, otherwise you start the next fight capped well under full.

8. Vehicles are chosen in the deploy screen before you spawn, not found on the map

Vehicles are chosen in the deploy screen before you spawn, not found on the map. If you want the heavy tank or a plane, pick it while the round is loading, because the slot is taken within seconds.

9. Spotting with the ping puts an enemy on the minimap for the whole squad, and a Recon spotting scope extends that marker to the entire team

Spotting with the ping puts an enemy on the minimap for the whole squad, and a Recon spotting scope extends that marker to the entire team. Ping first and shoot second in a squad that is coordinating.

10. Smoke is the strongest utility in the game

Smoke is the strongest utility in the game. A Medic smoke grenade rifle blanks an entire capture point long enough for four players to cross open ground on Hamada or Panzerstorm without being picked apart.

Advanced Strategies

Role Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Assault (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Fortification building combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: StG 44
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Medic (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: MP40
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Battlefield V's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Fortification building + Attrition ammo economy: Every kit carries a hammer and can build sandbags, barbed wire, tank traps and rebuilt walls at the marked construction points around objectives. Combined with Attrition ammo economy, you deploy with a fraction of your maximum reserve and top up from the small ammo drops corpses leave behind.

Squad reinforcements + Squad revive: Objective play banks squad points that the squad leader spends from the deploy screen on a supply canister, a smoke barrage, a Churchill Crocodile or Sturmtiger, and at the top of the list the V-1 or JB-2 rocket. When paired with Squad revive, any class can pick up a downed squadmate, but the animation runs far longer than a medic syringe.

Weapon specialization trees scaling: Each gun earns proficiency levels that unlock a branching upgrade tree covering recoil, hip fire, muzzle velocity, magazine size and aim speed. You commit to one side of each branch per weapon, so two players carrying the same Sten can have very different guns.

Weapons Efficiency

WeaponBest Use CaseWhy
StG 44Assault players holding open flags on Arras, Twisted Steel and Panzerstorm. The Assault class assault rifle, 30 rounds, moderate rate of fire and enough accuracy at 40 to 60 metres to beat SMGs that push you.
MP40Close quarters revive work in Rotterdam's streets and the tunnels of Operation Underground.Medic submachine gun unlocked at Medic rank 6, with the flattest recoil in the class and forgiving handling at the ranges medics actually fight.
Bren GunLocking a single lane or bridge approach for a squad that is holding rather than pushing.Support light machine gun with a 30 round top mounted magazine.
Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk INew Recon players and any map where you need a follow up round before the target reaches cover. The Recon starter bolt action, ten rounds and the fastest cycling bolt gun available, which forgives a missed first shot.
M1928A1 ThompsonPacific bunker fighting on Iwo Jima and Wake Island where engagements open under 15 metres.Medic submachine gun from Chapter 5 with a drum magazine and hard hitting close range damage, at the cost of heavier recoil than the MP40.

Location Efficiency

Narvik (Conquest 64 players): Snowbound Norwegian ore town from the launch lineup, split between a wooded ridge, a cable car line and a dense town centre. The snow hides prone bodies far better than most players expect.

Rotterdam (Conquest and Breakthrough): A Dutch city map built around a canal and a raised bridge, with shop interiors on both banks. Most fights are decided inside buildings rather than on the streets between them.

Twisted Steel (Conquest 64 players): French farmland dominated by a huge damaged steel bridge that runs the length of the map. The bridge deck is a killing field and the marshy ground under it is the safer route.

Operation Underground (Conquest and Breakthrough): Released in November 2019 as a rebuilt Operation Metro, with a bombed street above and subway platforms below. The longest sightline in the map is a train platform, which punishes bolt actions.

Iwo Jima (Conquest and Breakthrough): Pacific map added in February 2020, running from a black sand beach landing up to Mount Suribachi. Attackers cross open sand under fire, defenders fight from tunnels and bunker mouths.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Playing Assault as a plain rifleman and never firing the Panzerfaust, which leaves an unopposed tank parked on a flag for minutes at a time.
  2. Ignoring the hammer entirely. The construction points near objectives exist because the map is designed around cover that players make rather than cover that already stands.
  3. Bringing a bolt action Recon into Operation Underground, where the longest sightline is a subway platform and any submachine gun wins that trade.
  4. Reviving in the open on the objective instead of pulling the body one step behind cover, which turns one death into two or three.
  5. Skipping the Support ammo crate because it feels passive. Under attrition the crate is what keeps the squad shooting through the second half of a fight.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Build the sandbag line on a flag before the first contact rather than after it collapses. Support raises fortifications noticeably faster than other kits, and a finished wall changes how that objective is fought over for the rest of the round.
  • Attrition deploys you with partial reserve ammunition, so walk over every corpse on your route to collect the small drops they leave. Standing beside a Support ammo crate for a few seconds is the only way to fill completely.
  • Any class can revive a squadmate, but the animation is long enough to get both of you killed in the open. Approach the body from the side that has cover, and use a Medic smoke grenade rifle if the body sits on the objective itself.
  • Start with Medic, switch to Assault when ready
  • Invest in StG 44 above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Narvik → Rotterdam → Twisted Steel → Operation Underground → Iwo Jima. See our maps guide
  • Fortification building + Attrition ammo economy together are stronger than either alone
