Clicker Heroes is Playsaurus' idle game where you click a monster, hire heroes to do the clicking for you, and then wipe everything the moment resetting is faster than continuing. Progress is measured in zones, with a boss every fifth zone on a 30 second kill timer. The real game sits behind two reset buttons: Ancients bought with Hero Souls, and Outsiders bought with Ancient Souls.
Starting Clicker Heroes can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
Clicker Heroes is a simulation game built around Zones and boss timers and Ascension and Hero Souls. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Build
| Build | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Idle build | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Active click build | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Hybrid build | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Auto clicker idle build | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Transcendence pushing | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with Active click build. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Transcendence pushing as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Zones and boss timers
Ten monsters clear a normal zone and every fifth zone is a boss with a 30 second kill window. Failing that window sends you back to farm the earlier zones, and Chronos, Ancient of Time, is the standard fix once bosses start timing out.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Zones and boss timers works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Zone 100
The first Centurion boss, Omeet, sits here and always drops exactly one Hero Soul regardless of your bonuses. Primal bosses begin appearing past this point, which is when ascension income actually starts.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for Libertas, Ancient of Freedom: it's the most accessible early upgrade. The gold half of the idle pair, raising gold earned while idle so hero levels keep climbing without input. Paired with Mammon and Mimzee it forms the standard gold set.
Step 4: Understand Ascension and Hero Souls
Ascending wipes gold, heroes and levels and pays out Hero Souls, each worth a permanent 10 percent DPS increase. Primal bosses past zone 100 are what actually generate souls, at a 25 percent base chance that Atman, Ancient of Souls, pushes toward 100 percent.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to Zone 140
Boss health growth changes here. Up to zone 140 each boss needs roughly ten times the damage of the previous one, and after it roughly double, so the wall you hit around 140 is the last brutal one of the run.
Essential Mechanics Explained
Zones and boss timers
Ten monsters clear a normal zone and every fifth zone is a boss with a 30 second kill window. Failing that window sends you back to farm the earlier zones, and Chronos, Ancient of Time, is the standard fix once bosses start timing out.
Ascension and Hero Souls
Ascending wipes gold, heroes and levels and pays out Hero Souls, each worth a permanent 10 percent DPS increase. Primal bosses past zone 100 are what actually generate souls, at a 25 percent base chance that Atman, Ancient of Souls, pushes toward 100 percent.
Ancients
Hero Souls summon and level Ancients such as Siyalatas, Ancient of Abandon for idle damage and Fragsworth, Ancient of Wrath for click damage. Levelling cost grows quadratically, so one Ancient at level 100 costs far more than ten at level 10.
Transcendence and Outsiders
Transcendence is the second reset. It converts Hero Souls into Ancient Souls and clears your Ancients entirely, and Ancient Souls buy Outsiders like Chor'gorloth, who cuts Ancient costs, and Ponyboy, who multiplies Hero Soul gains.
Gilds
Gilds land on a random hero from zone 100 onward and multiply that hero's damage, with Argaiv, Ancient of Enhancement, raising what each gild is worth. Moving every gild onto your current best hero is the cheapest large damage gain available.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Ascending far too late and losing hours to a run that has already stalled
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
2. Splitting Hero Souls between idle and active Ancients so neither set performs
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
3. Ignoring Atman and then wondering why ascensions pay so few souls
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
4. Levelling skill duration Ancients while playing fully idle
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
5. Transcending before banking enough Hero Souls to make the Ancient Soul conversion worthwhile
This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Zones and boss timers and Ascension and Hero Souls
- Choose Active click build as starting build
- Clear Zone 100 main content
- Acquire Libertas, Ancient of Freedom or equivalent upgrade
- Reach Zone 140
- Keep Siyalatas and Libertas within one level of each other. The idle pair is designed to be levelled together and pushing one far ahead wastes souls that would return more on the other.
- Level Atman before pushing deeper zones. Primal chance starts at 25 percent, and every point toward 100 percent multiplies the souls a whole run produces rather than adding a flat amount.
Tips for New Players
- Keep Siyalatas and Libertas within one level of each other. The idle pair is designed to be levelled together and pushing one far ahead wastes souls that would return more on the other.
- Level Atman before pushing deeper zones. Primal chance starts at 25 percent, and every point toward 100 percent multiplies the souls a whole run produces rather than adding a flat amount.
- Ascend when your progress per hour visibly stalls, not on a fixed zone. A run that has slowed to one zone every ten minutes is already paying less than a fresh run with the souls you have banked.
- Move every gild onto whichever hero currently deals the most damage. Gilds are stuck on random heroes when earned, and consolidating them is free damage that costs only clicks in the menu.
- Buy Chor'gorloth first after your first transcendence. Cheaper Ancients compound into every other purchase, which makes it worth more than a direct damage Outsider at low Ancient Soul totals.
- Do not level skill duration Ancients such as Chawedo, Berserker, Sniperino, Energon, Kleptos and Hecatoncheir on an idle build. They only extend skills you are not using.
- Use Kumawakamaru once zone clears feel slow. The default is ten monsters per non boss zone, and cutting that number speeds up every zone between bosses rather than just the boss itself.
- Chronos is the answer to bosses timing out, not more damage. If you are killing bosses with a second to spare, extra seconds on the 30 second timer are cheaper than the damage needed to beat it outright.
- Solomon raises the souls each primal boss pays out, so it scales with how deep you push rather than how fast you clear. It is worth more on long runs than on quick ascension cycles.
- Auto clickers bought with rubies can be left unassigned to feed Nogardnit for idle damage instead of assigned to click. On an idle build the unassigned option is usually the stronger one.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should you first ascend?
Most players ascend for the first time somewhere between zone 140 and 200. Zone 140 is where boss health growth shifts, and pushing to 200 with Atman levelled usually banks noticeably more souls.
Which Ancient should you summon first?
Siyalatas if you plan to play idle, Fragsworth if you plan to click. Atman and Mammon follow immediately either way, because souls and gold gate everything else.
What is the difference between ascending and transcending?
Ascending resets heroes and gold for Hero Souls and keeps your Ancients. Transcending resets your Ancients too, converting Hero Souls into Ancient Souls that buy Outsiders.
Is idle better than active clicking?
Idle wins over a full day because it keeps working while you are away. Active wins per minute at the keyboard, which makes it useful for pushing through a specific boss wall.
What are primal bosses?
Bosses past zone 100 that pay Hero Souls when killed, at a 25 percent base chance. Atman raises that chance and Solomon raises the number of souls each one gives.
