Relic and Sega moved the series to the Mediterranean on 23 February 2023 with four armies: US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht and the Deutsches Afrikakorps. Single player splits two ways, a turn based Italian dynamic campaign map running from Palermo to Rome and an eight mission North African operation briefed by Rommel. Full Tactical Pause freezes any campaign mission or skirmish against the AI so you can issue orders with the clock stopped.
Starting Company of Heroes 3 can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
Company of Heroes 3 is a strategy game built around Italian dynamic campaign map and Full Tactical Pause. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Build
| Build | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| US Forces | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| British Forces | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Wehrmacht | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Deutsches Afrikakorps | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Battlegroups | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with British Forces. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Battlegroups as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Italian dynamic campaign map
The Italy campaign is a turn based layer running from Palermo to Rome where you move companies, capture ports and airfields to extend supply, and drop into real time battles when a stack meets resistance. Auto resolving a fight is quicker but usually costs more men than playing it, and those losses follow the company to the next province.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Italian dynamic campaign map works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Sicily
The Italian campaign opens on Sicily around Palermo, where the map is wide, the garrisons are thin and you are learning the company and supply systems. Early ports here decide how fast your fleet can support the mainland landings.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for MG 42 Machine Gun Team: it's the most accessible early upgrade. The Wehrmacht heavy machine gun sets up in a wide arc and suppresses anything inside it, dropping enemy infantry to a crawl. It is helpless once flanked, since the crew must repack and turn before firing again.
Step 4: Understand Full Tactical Pause
Tactical Pause stops the clock in campaign missions and single player skirmishes so you can queue orders and unpause with every squad already moving. It does not exist in multiplayer, so use it to read a fight rather than as a habit you will lose online.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to Salerno
The mainland landings put you on a narrow coastal strip with German armour above you. Naval bombardment reaches most of this area, which makes it the best place to learn how much a ship strike changes a defended position.
Essential Mechanics Explained
Italian dynamic campaign map
The Italy campaign is a turn based layer running from Palermo to Rome where you move companies, capture ports and airfields to extend supply, and drop into real time battles when a stack meets resistance. Auto resolving a fight is quicker but usually costs more men than playing it, and those losses follow the company to the next province.
Full Tactical Pause
Tactical Pause stops the clock in campaign missions and single player skirmishes so you can queue orders and unpause with every squad already moving. It does not exist in multiplayer, so use it to read a fight rather than as a habit you will lose online.
Breach on garrisoned buildings
Squads with the Breach ability walk up to an occupied building and clear it from inside instead of grinding the walls down with rifle fire. The approach and animation leave the squad exposed for several seconds, so suppress the garrison or drop smoke before you commit.
Battlegroup call-in trees
Each faction picks one Battlegroup per match and spends earned points down a branching tree of call-in units and abilities. The Wehrmacht choose between Mechanized, Breakthrough and Luftwaffe, the British between Indian Artillery, British Armored and Air and Sea, and the choice is locked for the rest of the game.
Directional vehicle armour
Tanks carry far heavier plate at the front than on the flanks and rear, so a Panzer IV that bounces a frontal shot dies to the same gun from behind. Reverse out of a losing engagement instead of turning, because a turn presents the thin side armour for two or three full seconds.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Turning a tank around to retreat instead of reversing, which hands the enemy gun a free shot at the rear plate
2. Fighting a garrisoned building with rifle fire for a full minute rather than breaching, burning or shelling it
3. Spreading Battlegroup points across two branches and unlocking nothing that changes a fight
4. Relying on Tactical Pause in single player and then being unable to keep up in a real time multiplayer match where it does not exist
5. Letting squads fight to the last model instead of retreating and reinforcing, which throws away veterancy and costs more manpower overall
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Italian dynamic campaign map and Full Tactical Pause
- Choose British Forces as starting build
- Clear Sicily main content
- Acquire MG 42 Machine Gun Team or equivalent upgrade
- Reach Salerno
- Play the North African operation before touching Italy. It is eight linear missions that teach Breach, flanking, vehicle armour facing and Battlegroup spending one at a time, whereas the Italian campaign drops a strategic layer and a real time layer on you at once.
- Reverse damaged vehicles out of contact rather than turning them around. A three point turn shows the thin side and rear plate for two or three seconds, and a Pak 40 or 6-pounder only needs one of those seconds to land a penetrating shot.
Tips for New Players
- Play the North African operation before touching Italy. It is eight linear missions that teach Breach, flanking, vehicle armour facing and Battlegroup spending one at a time, whereas the Italian campaign drops a strategic layer and a real time layer on you at once.
- Reverse damaged vehicles out of contact rather than turning them around. A three point turn shows the thin side and rear plate for two or three seconds, and a Pak 40 or 6-pounder only needs one of those seconds to land a penetrating shot.
- Garrisoned buildings are the strongest cover on any map, so never trade rifle fire with one. Either Breach it with a squad that has the ability, burn the occupants out with a flame unit, or drop mortar fire on the roof and take the building afterwards.
- Choose your Battlegroup in the first three minutes and commit. Points accumulate slowly and a split tree gives you two weak branches instead of one working one, which is how Wehrmacht players end up with neither the Luftwaffe supply drop nor the Breakthrough armour.
- Retreat squads at roughly half models rather than fighting to the last man. A retreated four man squad reinforces back to full for a fraction of the manpower a fresh squad costs, and squad veterancy is lost permanently when the last model dies.
- On the Italian campaign map, take ports and airfields before you take provinces that only give territory. Ports extend naval bombardment range and airfields unlock air support, and both of those turn a losing real time battle into a manageable one.
- Set up machine guns behind their intended firing arc rather than in it. The team needs several seconds to pack, move and redeploy, so an MG 42 or Vickers placed where it already covers the approach is worth two placed reactively.
- Use smoke before crossing open ground. Smoke blocks line of sight for machine guns and anti-tank guns entirely, and most factions have it on a mortar or a cheap ability, which is far cheaper than losing two squads to suppression.
- Fuel points decide the game more than victory points do in the first ten minutes. Whoever holds two fuel points fields their first real armour roughly ninety seconds earlier, and that window is usually enough to take the rest of the map.
- Auto resolve on the campaign map only when a company is at full strength against a weak garrison. The auto resolve model is pessimistic about your losses, and a company that limps out of three auto resolved fights will fail the next scripted battle it is committed to.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many factions does Company of Heroes 3 have?
Four: US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht and the Deutsches Afrikakorps. Each picks one Battlegroup per match from its own list, which acts as a specialisation on top of the base roster.
Is the Italian campaign turn based or real time?
Both. The Italy map is a turn based layer from Palermo to Rome where you move companies, capture ports and manage supply, and individual engagements drop into standard real time battles that you can also auto resolve.
Does Tactical Pause work in multiplayer?
No. Full Tactical Pause is limited to campaign missions and single player skirmishes against the AI. Multiplayer runs without it, which is why players who learn only with pause struggle in their first online games.
Which campaign should I play first?
The North African operation. It is eight linear missions following the Deutsches Afrikakorps up to the first battle of El Alamein, with Rommel briefing each one, and it teaches the systems in order instead of all at once.
How is this different from Company of Heroes 2?
Different theatre and different systems. Company of Heroes 2 covered the Eastern Front with five armies and doctrine loadouts; Company of Heroes 3 covers Italy and North Africa with four armies, Battlegroup trees, a Breach ability and a turn based campaign map.
