Relic and Sega moved the series to the Mediterranean on 23 February 2023 with four armies: US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht and the Deutsches Afrikakorps. Single player splits two ways, a turn based Italian dynamic campaign map running from Palermo to Rome and an eight mission North African operation briefed by Rommel. Full Tactical Pause freezes any campaign mission or skirmish against the AI so you can issue orders with the clock stopped.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Play the North African operation before touching Italy

Play the North African operation before touching Italy. It is eight linear missions that teach Breach, flanking, vehicle armour facing and Battlegroup spending one at a time, whereas the Italian campaign drops a strategic layer and a real time layer on you at once.

2. Reverse damaged vehicles out of contact rather than turning them around

Reverse damaged vehicles out of contact rather than turning them around. A three point turn shows the thin side and rear plate for two or three seconds, and a Pak 40 or 6-pounder only needs one of those seconds to land a penetrating shot.

3. Garrisoned buildings are the strongest cover on any map, so never trade rifle fire with one

Garrisoned buildings are the strongest cover on any map, so never trade rifle fire with one. Either Breach it with a squad that has the ability, burn the occupants out with a flame unit, or drop mortar fire on the roof and take the building afterwards.

4. Choose your Battlegroup in the first three minutes and commit

Choose your Battlegroup in the first three minutes and commit. Points accumulate slowly and a split tree gives you two weak branches instead of one working one, which is how Wehrmacht players end up with neither the Luftwaffe supply drop nor the Breakthrough armour.

5. Retreat squads at roughly half models rather than fighting to the last man

Retreat squads at roughly half models rather than fighting to the last man. A retreated four man squad reinforces back to full for a fraction of the manpower a fresh squad costs, and squad veterancy is lost permanently when the last model dies.

6. On the Italian campaign map, take ports and airfields before you take provinces that only give territory

On the Italian campaign map, take ports and airfields before you take provinces that only give territory. Ports extend naval bombardment range and airfields unlock air support, and both of those turn a losing real time battle into a manageable one.

7. Set up machine guns behind their intended firing arc rather than in it

Set up machine guns behind their intended firing arc rather than in it. The team needs several seconds to pack, move and redeploy, so an MG 42 or Vickers placed where it already covers the approach is worth two placed reactively.

8. Use smoke before crossing open ground

Use smoke before crossing open ground. Smoke blocks line of sight for machine guns and anti-tank guns entirely, and most factions have it on a mortar or a cheap ability, which is far cheaper than losing two squads to suppression.

9. Fuel points decide the game more than victory points do in the first ten minutes

Fuel points decide the game more than victory points do in the first ten minutes. Whoever holds two fuel points fields their first real armour roughly ninety seconds earlier, and that window is usually enough to take the rest of the map.

10. Auto resolve on the campaign map only when a company is at full strength against a weak garrison

Auto resolve on the campaign map only when a company is at full strength against a weak garrison. The auto resolve model is pessimistic about your losses, and a company that limps out of three auto resolved fights will fail the next scripted battle it is committed to.

Advanced Strategies

Build Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For US Forces (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Italian dynamic campaign map combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: Riflemen Squad
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For British Forces (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: MG 42 Machine Gun Team
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Company of Heroes 3's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Italian dynamic campaign map + Full Tactical Pause: The Italy campaign is a turn based layer running from Palermo to Rome where you move companies, capture ports and airfields to extend supply, and drop into real time battles when a stack meets resistance. Combined with Full Tactical Pause, tactical pause stops the clock in campaign missions and single player skirmishes so you can queue orders and unpause with every squad already moving.

Breach on garrisoned buildings + Battlegroup call-in trees: Squads with the Breach ability walk up to an occupied building and clear it from inside instead of grinding the walls down with rifle fire. When paired with Battlegroup call-in trees, each faction picks one battlegroup per match and spends earned points down a branching tree of call-in units and abilities.

Directional vehicle armour scaling: Tanks carry far heavier plate at the front than on the flanks and rear, so a Panzer IV that bounces a frontal shot dies to the same gun from behind. Reverse out of a losing engagement instead of turning, because a turn presents the thin side armour for two or three full seconds.

Equipment Efficiency

EquipmentBest Use CaseWhy
Riflemen SquadContesting two or three points at once in the first five minutesThe US line infantry squad, cheap enough to field three or four early and able to build sandbags, throw grenades and pick up a Bazooka.
MG 42 Machine Gun TeamLocking a road or a bridge while Grenadiers work the flankThe Wehrmacht heavy machine gun sets up in a wide arc and suppresses anything inside it, dropping enemy infantry to a crawl.
M18 Hellcat Tank DestroyerHitting Panzer IVs and StuGs in the flank, then reversing outFast, lightly armoured and armed with a gun that opens German medium tanks, the Hellcat is a tool for ambushing rather than brawling.
Panzer IV Medium TankWehrmacht pushes between minutes twelve and twentyThe German workhorse medium tank, good against infantry and able to trade with Shermans head on.
6-pounder Anti-tank Gun TeamHolding a defensive line against Panzer III and Panzer IV pushesBritish towed anti-tank gun that hits hard from a static position and is nearly useless while being repositioned.

Location Efficiency

Sicily (Campaign turns 1 to 20): The Italian campaign opens on Sicily around Palermo, where the map is wide, the garrisons are thin and you are learning the company and supply systems. Early ports here decide how fast your fleet can support the mainland landings.

Salerno (Campaign turns 20 to 45): The mainland landings put you on a narrow coastal strip with German armour above you. Naval bombardment reaches most of this area, which makes it the best place to learn how much a ship strike changes a defended position.

Monte Cassino (Campaign turns 45 to 75): The mountain line is where the campaign stops being a march. Elevation, fortified positions and narrow approaches mean frontal attacks fail, and the answer is usually air support plus a flanking company rather than more tanks.

Rome (Campaign turns 75 and later): The end of the Italian dynamic campaign map. By this point your companies are levelled and the enemy is throwing its best armour at you, so the fights are shorter and far less forgiving of an understrength stack.

North Africa (Missions 1 to 8): A separate eight mission linear operation played as the Deutsches Afrikakorps, briefed by Rommel and running up to the first battle of El Alamein. It is the better teaching campaign because each mission introduces one idea and then tests it.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Turning a tank around to retreat instead of reversing, which hands the enemy gun a free shot at the rear plate.
  2. Fighting a garrisoned building with rifle fire for a full minute rather than breaching, burning or shelling it.
  3. Spreading Battlegroup points across two branches and unlocking nothing that changes a fight.
  4. Relying on Tactical Pause in single player and then being unable to keep up in a real time multiplayer match where it does not exist.
  5. Letting squads fight to the last model instead of retreating and reinforcing, which throws away veterancy and costs more manpower overall.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Play the North African operation before touching Italy. It is eight linear missions that teach Breach, flanking, vehicle armour facing and Battlegroup spending one at a time, whereas the Italian campaign drops a strategic layer and a real time layer on you at once.
  • Reverse damaged vehicles out of contact rather than turning them around. A three point turn shows the thin side and rear plate for two or three seconds, and a Pak 40 or 6-pounder only needs one of those seconds to land a penetrating shot.
  • Garrisoned buildings are the strongest cover on any map, so never trade rifle fire with one. Either Breach it with a squad that has the ability, burn the occupants out with a flame unit, or drop mortar fire on the roof and take the building afterwards.
  • Start with British Forces, switch to US Forces when ready
  • Invest in Riflemen Squad above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Sicily → Salerno → Monte Cassino → Rome → North Africa. See our maps guide
  • Italian dynamic campaign map + Full Tactical Pause together are stronger than either alone
