Relic and Sega moved the series to the Mediterranean on 23 February 2023 with four armies: US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht and the Deutsches Afrikakorps. Single player splits two ways, a turn based Italian dynamic campaign map running from Palermo to Rome and an eight mission North African operation briefed by Rommel. Full Tactical Pause freezes any campaign mission or skirmish against the AI so you can issue orders with the clock stopped.

Combat in Company of Heroes 3 rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Italian dynamic campaign map

The Italy campaign is a turn based layer running from Palermo to Rome where you move companies, capture ports and airfields to extend supply, and drop into real time battles when a stack meets resistance. Auto resolving a fight is quicker but usually costs more men than playing it, and those losses follow the company to the next province.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Full Tactical Pause

Tactical Pause stops the clock in campaign missions and single player skirmishes so you can queue orders and unpause with every squad already moving. It does not exist in multiplayer, so use it to read a fight rather than as a habit you will lose online.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Breach on garrisoned buildings

Squads with the Breach ability walk up to an occupied building and clear it from inside instead of grinding the walls down with rifle fire. The approach and animation leave the squad exposed for several seconds, so suppress the garrison or drop smoke before you commit.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Battlegroup call-in trees

Each faction picks one Battlegroup per match and spends earned points down a branching tree of call-in units and abilities. The Wehrmacht choose between Mechanized, Breakthrough and Luftwaffe, the British between Indian Artillery, British Armored and Air and Sea, and the choice is locked for the rest of the game.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Directional vehicle armour

Tanks carry far heavier plate at the front than on the flanks and rear, so a Panzer IV that bounces a frontal shot dies to the same gun from behind. Reverse out of a losing engagement instead of turning, because a turn presents the thin side armour for two or three full seconds.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Italian dynamic campaign map + Full Tactical Pause

The Italy campaign is a turn based layer running from Palermo to Rome where you move companies, capture ports and airfields to extend supply, and drop into real time battles when a stack meets resistance. When combined with Full Tactical Pause, tactical pause stops the clock in campaign missions and single player skirmishes so you can queue orders and unpause with every squad already moving. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Breach on garrisoned buildings + Battlegroup call-in trees

Squads with the Breach ability walk up to an occupied building and clear it from inside instead of grinding the walls down with rifle fire. Paired with Battlegroup call-in trees, each faction picks one battlegroup per match and spends earned points down a branching tree of call-in units and abilities. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Directional vehicle armour as a Multiplier

Tanks carry far heavier plate at the front than on the flanks and rear, so a Panzer IV that bounces a frontal shot dies to the same gun from behind. Reverse out of a losing engagement instead of turning, because a turn presents the thin side armour for two or three full seconds. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Directional vehicle armour optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Italian dynamic campaign map for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Full Tactical Pause and Breach on garrisoned buildings for combo damage
  4. Use Battlegroup call-in trees to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Play the North African operation before touching Italy. It is eight linear missions that teach Breach, flanking, vehicle armour facing and Battlegroup spending one at a time, whereas the Italian campaign drops a strategic layer and a real time layer on you at once.
  3. Position using Italian dynamic campaign map to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Full Tactical Pause: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Sicily but will get you killed in North Africa.
