Core Keeper starts you in the dark beside a dormant Core with a pickaxe and nothing else. Mining outward reveals biomes, bosses and ore tiers that climb from copper through scarlet and octarine, and the whole game is a slow negotiation between how far you have dug and how well equipped you are to survive what is down there.
Combat in Core Keeper rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Mining and exploration
The map is fully destructible and starts unlit. Digging is both movement and resource gathering, and lighting your tunnels is what makes an area safely reusable.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Skill progression
Mining, melee, ranged, fishing, cooking, gardening and running all level through use. You do not pick a class, you gradually become whatever you have been doing.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Boss unlocks
Defeating Glurch, Ghorm and The Hive Mother powers the Core and opens access to later biomes. Progression is gated by these fights rather than by story.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Base automation
Conveyor belts, robotic arms and drills let production run without you. The transition from manual mining to automated supply is the game's main power curve.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Ore tier gating
Copper, tin, iron, scarlet, octarine and galaxite each require the previous tier's tools. Skipping ahead is impossible, so tool upgrades pace everything.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Mining and exploration + Skill progression
The map is fully destructible and starts unlit. When combined with Skill progression, mining, melee, ranged, fishing, cooking, gardening and running all level through use. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Boss unlocks + Base automation
Defeating Glurch, Ghorm and The Hive Mother powers the Core and opens access to later biomes. Paired with Base automation, conveyor belts, robotic arms and drills let production run without you. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Ore tier gating as a Multiplier
Copper, tin, iron, scarlet, octarine and galaxite each require the previous tier's tools. Skipping ahead is impossible, so tool upgrades pace everything. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Ore tier gating optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Mining and exploration for maximum damage windows
- Chain Skill progression and Boss unlocks for combo damage
- Use Base automation to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Place torches as you dig rather than in a later pass. Unlit tunnels spawn enemies and cost you the map knowledge you just paid for, and backtracking to light a corridor always takes longer than lighting it in passing.
- Position using Mining and exploration to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Skill progression: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in The Core but will get you killed in Azeos' Wilderness.
