Core Keeper starts you in the dark beside a dormant Core with a pickaxe and nothing else. Mining outward reveals biomes, bosses and ore tiers that climb from copper through scarlet and octarine, and the whole game is a slow negotiation between how far you have dug and how well equipped you are to survive what is down there.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (The Core)

The starting chamber and permanent base site. Powering it with boss remains is the spine of the whole progression.

Level/Difficulty: Start onward Key Rewards: Progression gates, base hub

What to Do in The Core

  1. Learn Mining and exploration. The map is fully destructible and starts unlit. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Ranged skirmisher as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Place torches as you dig rather than in a later pass. Unlit tunnels spawn enemies and cost you the map knowledge you just paid for, and backtracking to light a corridor always takes longer than lighting it in passing.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Iron sword or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Mining and exploration fundamentals
  • Ranged skirmisher selected and functional
  • The Core main content cleared
  • Ready for Dirt Biome

Phase 2: Early Game (Dirt Biome)

The surrounding starter area holding copper, tin and Glurch. Safe enough to learn in and generous with early materials.

Level/Difficulty: Opening hours Key Rewards: Copper, tin, Glurch

What to Do in Dirt Biome

  1. Work on Skill progression. Mining, melee, ranged, fishing, cooking, gardening and running all level through use. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Iron sword if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Pickaxe tier gates the entire game. Whenever progress feels slow, the answer is almost always the next pickaxe rather than better armour or a bigger base.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Clay Caves.
  5. Consider whether Melee bruiser might suit your playstyle better than Ranged skirmisher.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Skill progression integrated into gameplay
  • Iron sword acquired
  • Dirt Biome fully cleared
  • Ready for Clay Caves

Phase 3: Mid Game (Clay Caves)

Orange stone region with iron and Ghorm circling on a fixed path. Noticeably more dangerous than the dirt.

Level/Difficulty: Early to mid Key Rewards: Iron, Ghorm, clay

What to Do in Clay Caves

  1. Master Boss unlocks. Defeating Glurch, Ghorm and The Hive Mother powers the Core and opens access to later biomes. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Copper pickaxe. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Cooked food gives real combat buffs while raw ingredients barely restore health. Setting up a cooking pot early turns marginal boss fights into comfortable ones.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Base automation for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Boss unlocks mastered
  • Copper pickaxe acquired or in progress
  • Clay Caves fully cleared
  • Ready for Forgotten Ruins

Phase 4: Late Game (Forgotten Ruins)

Ancient stone area holding The Hive Mother and scarlet ore, with enemies that punish underlevelled gear.

Level/Difficulty: Mid game Key Rewards: Scarlet ore, The Hive Mother

What to Do in Forgotten Ruins

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Melee bruiser or Ranged skirmisher with optimized gear.
  2. Copper pickaxe should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Ghorm circles on a fixed path and does not deviate. Fighting on foot into that charge is a losing proposition; ranged weapons from outside the track make the fight almost free.
  4. Ore tier gating optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Azeos' Wilderness.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Copper pickaxe upgraded to max
  • Forgotten Ruins fully cleared
  • Ready for Azeos' Wilderness

Phase 5: Endgame (Azeos' Wilderness)

Bright overgrown biome opened after powering the Core, home to Azeos the Sky Titan and a jump in difficulty.

Level/Difficulty: Mid to late Key Rewards: Octarine, Azeos, rare seeds

What to Do in Azeos' Wilderness

  1. Azeos' Wilderness tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Build your base directly around the Core rather than wherever you happen to be. Everything routes back there eventually, and a distant base means permanent travel overhead.
  3. The endgame loop: run Azeos' Wilderness, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Automation engineer for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Ore tier gating mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Azeos' Wilderness fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Digging long unlit tunnels that spawn enemies behind you
  • Exploring new biomes on an outdated pickaxe and gear tier
  • Eating raw ingredients instead of cooking for the combat buffs
  • Meleeing Ghorm head on inside its charge path
  • Building the main base far from the Core and paying travel time forever

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Place torches as you dig rather than in a later pass. Unlit tunnels spawn enemies and cost you the map knowledge you just paid for, and backtracking to light a corridor always takes longer than lighting it in passing.
  2. Pickaxe tier gates the entire game. Whenever progress feels slow, the answer is almost always the next pickaxe rather than better armour or a bigger base.
  3. Cooked food gives real combat buffs while raw ingredients barely restore health. Setting up a cooking pot early turns marginal boss fights into comfortable ones.
  4. Ghorm circles on a fixed path and does not deviate. Fighting on foot into that charge is a losing proposition; ranged weapons from outside the track make the fight almost free.
  5. Build your base directly around the Core rather than wherever you happen to be. Everything routes back there eventually, and a distant base means permanent travel overhead.
