Core Keeper starts you in the dark beside a dormant Core with a pickaxe and nothing else. Mining outward reveals biomes, bosses and ore tiers that climb from copper through scarlet and octarine, and the whole game is a slow negotiation between how far you have dug and how well equipped you are to survive what is down there.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper pickaxe | S | The opening hours, where mining speed limits absolutely everything. | The first upgrade that matters, roughly doubling how fast you open the map and reach tin and iron. |
| Iron sword | A | Glurch and Ghorm, and clearing the Clay Caves safely. | The first weapon that handles the early bosses without needing perfect play or heavy food buffs. |
| Scarlet armour | A | Pushing past the Forgotten Ruins into the mid game biomes. | Mid game defensive tier that makes Azeos' Wilderness survivable rather than a series of retreats. |
| Octarine gear | B | Late biomes and the harder optional bosses. | Late tier equipment for the Sunken Sea and beyond, where earlier gear simply cannot absorb the damage. |
| Bows and slingshots | B | Ghorm and any fight where standing still is the thing that kills you. | Ranged options that trivialise several bosses whose melee patterns are punishing. |

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear The Core
- Iron sword → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Scarlet armour → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Copper pickaxe → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Place torches as you dig rather than in a later pass. Unlit tunnels spawn enemies and cost you the map knowledge you just paid for, and backtracking to light a corridor always takes longer than lighting it in passing.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
