Targem Games and Gaijin launched Crossout as a free-to-play title on 26 July 2017, and it is still on a seasonal schedule nine years later, with the Dark Awakening season running from 4 June to 2 September 2026 and adding the Eclipse faction. You bolt a vehicle together part by part from a cabin, movement parts, weapons and modules, then take it into 8v8 missions, raids and clan battles where every component you attached can be shot off individually. Parts run through seven rarity steps from Starter up to Relic, and relics need uranium plus Engineers reputation 20 to craft.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Brawler
Brawler is a top-performing option in Crossout.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Punisher | A relic machine gun crafted at the Engineers workbench at reputation 20. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Part by part vehicle building | Every vehicle starts as a cabin, which sets whether the build is light, medium or heavy, then gains a frame, movement parts, weapons and modules. |
How to Play Brawler
Brawler focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Punisher does the damage and Part by part vehicle building keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Sniper
Sniper is a strong option in Crossout.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | AC72 Whirlwind | An epic autocannon sitting between the special AC50 Storm and the legendary AC80 Stillwind. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Modular damage and part loss | There is no vehicle health bar. |
How to Play Sniper
Sniper focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair AC72 Whirlwind with Modular damage and part loss and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Melee dog
Melee dog is a strong option in Crossout.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Scorpion | A relic coilgun whose shot passes through multiple parts along its path instead of stopping at the first plate it meets. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Power Score matchmaking | Power Score is the summed rating of every part bolted to the vehicle and it decides which bracket you queue into. |
How to Play Melee dog
Melee dog focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Power Score matchmaking covers the gap Scorpion leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Hover platform
Hover platform is a specialized option in Crossout.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Mandrake | A legendary mortar that fires in an arc over terrain onto a targeted area, which makes it the main indirect-fire option in the game. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Faction reputation and crafting | Each faction runs its own reputation track and workbench with its own parts. |
How to Play Hover platform
Hover platform focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Faction reputation and crafting rather than raw numbers, and Mandrake is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Mechanical legs
Mechanical legs is a specialized option in Crossout.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Harvester | A legendary Lunatics melee weapon, a set of powered saw blades that chew through parts on contact. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | The in-game market | Most parts crafted at faction workbenches can be listed on the shared market for coins, so the usual route to an expensive weapon is to craft cheap parts, sell them, and buy the one you want. |
How to Play Mechanical legs
Mechanical legs focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Harvester and The in-game market pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Sniper: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Brawler once you understand core mechanics and have access to Punisher
- Keep a Melee dog setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Mechanical legs for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Bury the cabin. There is no vehicle health pool, so a match ends when someone destroys the cabin specifically. A build with average armour that hides the cabin behind a weapon, a generator and a wall of frame parts survives far longer than a heavily armoured build with the cabin exposed at the back.
- Watch your Power Score every time you add a part. It is the sum of every component on the vehicle and it sets your matchmaking bracket, so stapling extra armour onto a working build pushes you into lobbies against better weapons rather than making you tougher.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
