Core Mechanics
Six research matrices
Research consumes cubes rather than raw science points, and each colour is its own production problem. Electromagnetic Matrix takes Magnetic Coils and Circuit Boards, Energy Matrix takes Energetic Graphite and Hydrogen, Structure Matrix takes Diamonds and Titanium Crystal, and it escalates to Universe Matrix, which needs one of every other cube plus Antimatter.
Interstellar logistics stations
Planetary Logistics Stations move goods around one planet using drones, while Interstellar Logistics Stations dispatch Logistics Vessels between planets and star systems. Setting a station to demand rather than supply is what turns a scattered set of factories into one network.
Proliferator spray on inputs
A Spray Coater applies Proliferator to items on a belt, and the receiving machine then produces either 25 percent extra products or runs faster, never both at once. Proliferator Mk.III carries 60 sprays per unit and raises the power draw of everything it touches.
Dyson Swarm sails and sphere shells
A Dyson Swarm is built by firing Solar Sails from EM-Rail Ejectors into orbit, which is cheap and available early. The full sphere needs Small Carrier Rockets from Vertical Launching Silos building shell frames, and Ray Receivers on the ground collect the output as power or Critical Photons.
Dark Fog raids and turret coverage
The Dark Fog grow bases and raid factories in proportion to how large and loud your production becomes. Gauss Turrets handle early ground waves on cheap ammo, Laser Turrets need no ammo at all but draw power, Implosion Cannons add splash and range, and Missile and Plasma Turrets are what reach space targets and hives.

Mining Machine: Covers a patch of ore veins and pulls from all of them at once, so placement over a dense vein cluster matters more than the number of miners you build.
Arc Smelter: The base smelting building for iron, copper, stone and silicon. The Plane Smelter that replaces it later needs Unipolar Magnets from a neutron star, so Arc Smelters carry most of the campaign.

Mediterranean planet: The standard starting world, carrying iron, copper, stone, coal and crude oil in comfortable quantities with a breathable surface and no extreme terrain.
Gobi planet: Dry, open and copper and silicon rich, with Fractal Silicon as its possible rare vein. Flat terrain makes it one of the easier worlds to lay out large blueprinted blocks on.
Lava planet: Hostile to look at and generous underneath, with high iron, copper and titanium concentrations. Titanium is the reason you go, since most starting systems have none.
Gas giant: Not a surface at all. Orbital Collectors skim Hydrogen and Deuterium, and some also yield Fire Ice, which feeds graphene and later the fusion chain.
Neutron star system: The only place besides a black hole where Unipolar Magnets spawn, and they spawn in small amounts. Those magnets are what make Particle Containers and Plane Smelters possible.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Leave a two or three tile gap between production rows from the very first factory. Retrofitting Assembling Machine Mk.III and Conveyor Belt Mk.III into a build with no spare tiles means demolishing the whole block instead of upgrading it in place.
- Blueprint anything you intend to build a second time. The blueprint tool copies belts, sorters, machines and settings together, and rebuilding a matrix block from a saved blueprint takes seconds against the twenty minutes the original cost.
- Give Hydrogen somewhere to go before you build oil refineries at scale. Refining produces it as a byproduct, and a full Hydrogen output backs up into the refinery and stops Energetic Graphite production entirely.
- Check star luminosity before choosing where to build the Dyson Swarm. A blue giant returns far more power per solar sail than a red dwarf, and the difference compounds across every Ray Receiver you ever place.
- Spray Proliferator on matrix inputs before anything else. Choosing extra products on research cubes returns 25 percent more of the single most expensive item chain in the game, which beats spraying raw ore by a wide margin.
- Set Interstellar Logistics Stations on the mining planet to supply and the ones at home to demand, then leave vessel counts low at first. Too many vessels on a short route burns warpers and power for throughput you are not consuming.
- Build Gauss Turrets with a Magnum ammo feed before the Dark Fog notice you, not after the first raid. Turret coverage is cheap early and very expensive to retrofit around an existing factory under attack.
- Use Laser Turrets on outposts you do not want to supply. They consume power instead of ammunition, so a remote mining base needs an energy connection rather than a logistics route for bullets.
- Upgrade belts before adding machines when a line runs at capacity. A saturated Mk.I belt caps everything downstream, and swapping to Mk.III often removes the bottleneck without a single new assembler.
- Plan the power curve one step ahead of the factory. Thermal plants carry the early game, solar and wind fill gaps, and Ray Receivers fed by the Swarm are what let you stop thinking about power at all, so start the Swarm earlier than feels necessary.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Building tightly packed rows with no spare tiles, then being unable to upgrade to Mk. III belts and assemblers without demolishing everything.
- Ignoring the Hydrogen byproduct from oil refining until the whole red cube line jams and the cause is not obvious.
- Settling a Dyson Swarm around a dim star because it was closest, and getting a fraction of the power per sail that a bright star would have given.
- Leaving the Dark Fog alone until a raid lands, then trying to build turret lines and ammunition supply while buildings are being destroyed.
- Hand-building matrix production instead of blueprinting the first working block, which turns every later expansion into the same hour of manual placement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dyson Sphere Program still in Early Access?
No. It entered Early Access on 21 January 2021 and released version 1.0 on 15 December 2023, alongside the free Rise of the Dark Fog update that introduced combat.
Can I turn the combat off?
Yes. Dark Fog settings are configured at galaxy creation, so you can disable them entirely for a pure building run, or raise their aggression if you want the raids to matter.
What should I automate first?
Electromagnetic Matrix. It only needs Magnetic Coils and Circuit Boards from iron and copper, and every later technology depends on a steady blue cube supply, so hand-crafting it wastes hours.
Do I need a full Dyson Sphere to finish the game?
You need the Dyson Swarm long before the shell. Solar Sails fired from EM-Rail Ejectors give usable power early, while the full sphere shell built by Vertical Launching Silos is a much later and far larger project.
Where do I find rare resources?
They are tied to planet types. Fractal Silicon appears on Gobi worlds, Organic Crystal on prairie worlds, Fire Ice around gas and ice giants, and Unipolar Magnets only in small amounts near neutron stars and black holes.
