Youthcat Studio put Dyson Sphere Program into Early Access on 21 January 2021 and shipped version 1.0 on 15 December 2023 alongside Rise of the Dark Fog, the free update that added combat. You play Icarus, a mecha dropped on a Mediterranean starting planet with instructions to encase a star in solar sails and shell frames. The scale runs from hand-placing a single Mining Machine to routing Logistics Vessels between star systems light years apart.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Smelting lines
Smelting lines is a top-performing option in Dyson Sphere Program.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Mining Machine | Covers a patch of ore veins and pulls from all of them at once, so placement over a dense vein cluster matters more than the number of miners you build. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Six research matrices | Research consumes cubes rather than raw science points, and each colour is its own production problem. |
How to Play Smelting lines
Smelting lines focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Mining Machine does the damage and Six research matrices keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Chemical refining
Chemical refining is a strong option in Dyson Sphere Program.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Arc Smelter | The base smelting building for iron, copper, stone and silicon. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Interstellar logistics stations | Planetary Logistics Stations move goods around one planet using drones, while Interstellar Logistics Stations dispatch Logistics Vessels between planets and star systems. |
How to Play Chemical refining
Chemical refining focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Arc Smelter with Interstellar logistics stations and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Component assembly
Component assembly is a strong option in Dyson Sphere Program.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Assembling Machine Mk.III | The fastest ground assembler, worth retrofitting into existing blocks because a single Mk. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Proliferator spray on inputs | A Spray Coater applies Proliferator to items on a belt, and the receiving machine then produces either 25 percent extra products or runs faster, never both at once. |
How to Play Component assembly
Component assembly focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Proliferator spray on inputs covers the gap Assembling Machine Mk.III leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Matrix research
Matrix research is a specialized option in Dyson Sphere Program.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Conveyor Belt Mk.III | The highest throughput belt in the game and the one that removes most bottlenecks in older builds. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Dyson Swarm sails and sphere shells | A Dyson Swarm is built by firing Solar Sails from EM-Rail Ejectors into orbit, which is cheap and available early. |
How to Play Matrix research
Matrix research focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Dyson Swarm sails and sphere shells rather than raw numbers, and Conveyor Belt Mk.III is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Power generation
Power generation is a specialized option in Dyson Sphere Program.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Interstellar Logistics Station | Dispatches Logistics Vessels between planets and star systems, and it is the single building that changes the shape of the game. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Dark Fog raids and turret coverage | The Dark Fog grow bases and raid factories in proportion to how large and loud your production becomes. |
How to Play Power generation
Power generation focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Interstellar Logistics Station and Dark Fog raids and turret coverage pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Chemical refining: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Smelting lines once you understand core mechanics and have access to Mining Machine
- Keep a Component assembly setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Power generation for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Leave a two or three tile gap between production rows from the very first factory. Retrofitting Assembling Machine Mk.III and Conveyor Belt Mk.III into a build with no spare tiles means demolishing the whole block instead of upgrading it in place.
- Blueprint anything you intend to build a second time. The blueprint tool copies belts, sorters, machines and settings together, and rebuilding a matrix block from a saved blueprint takes seconds against the twenty minutes the original cost.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
