Youthcat Studio put Dyson Sphere Program into Early Access on 21 January 2021 and shipped version 1.0 on 15 December 2023 alongside Rise of the Dark Fog, the free update that added combat. You play Icarus, a mecha dropped on a Mediterranean starting planet with instructions to encase a star in solar sails and shell frames. The scale runs from hand-placing a single Mining Machine to routing Logistics Vessels between star systems light years apart.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Mediterranean planet)
The standard starting world, carrying iron, copper, stone, coal and crude oil in comfortable quantities with a breathable surface and no extreme terrain.

What to Do in Mediterranean planet
- Learn Six research matrices. Research consumes cubes rather than raw science points, and each colour is its own production problem. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Chemical refining as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Leave a two or three tile gap between production rows from the very first factory. Retrofitting Assembling Machine Mk.III and Conveyor Belt Mk.III into a build with no spare tiles means demolishing the whole block instead of upgrading it in place.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Arc Smelter or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 2: Early Game (Gobi planet)
Dry, open and copper and silicon rich, with Fractal Silicon as its possible rare vein. Flat terrain makes it one of the easier worlds to lay out large blueprinted blocks on.

What to Do in Gobi planet
- Work on Interstellar logistics stations. Planetary Logistics Stations move goods around one planet using drones, while Interstellar Logistics Stations dispatch Logistics Vessels between planets and star systems. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Arc Smelter if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Blueprint anything you intend to build a second time. The blueprint tool copies belts, sorters, machines and settings together, and rebuilding a matrix block from a saved blueprint takes seconds against the twenty minutes the original cost.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Lava planet.
- Consider whether Smelting lines might suit your playstyle better than Chemical refining.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Interstellar logistics stations integrated into gameplay
- Arc Smelter acquired
- Gobi planet fully cleared
- Ready for Lava planet
Phase 3: Mid Game (Lava planet)
Hostile to look at and generous underneath, with high iron, copper and titanium concentrations. Titanium is the reason you go, since most starting systems have none.
Level/Difficulty: Mid game, around Structure Matrix Key Rewards: Titanium ore, high density iron and copper veins
What to Do in Lava planet
- Master Proliferator spray on inputs. A Spray Coater applies Proliferator to items on a belt, and the receiving machine then produces either 25 percent extra products or runs faster, never both at once. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Mining Machine. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Give Hydrogen somewhere to go before you build oil refineries at scale. Refining produces it as a byproduct, and a full Hydrogen output backs up into the refinery and stops Energetic Graphite production entirely.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Dyson Swarm sails and sphere shells for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Proliferator spray on inputs mastered
- Mining Machine acquired or in progress
- Lava planet fully cleared
- Ready for Gas giant
Phase 4: Late Game (Gas giant)
Not a surface at all. Orbital Collectors skim Hydrogen and Deuterium, and some also yield Fire Ice, which feeds graphene and later the fusion chain.
Level/Difficulty: Mid to late game Key Rewards: Hydrogen, Deuterium, Fire Ice from Orbital Collectors
What to Do in Gas giant
- Finalize your build. You should be running Smelting lines or Chemical refining with optimized gear.
- Mining Machine should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Check star luminosity before choosing where to build the Dyson Swarm. A blue giant returns far more power per solar sail than a red dwarf, and the difference compounds across every Ray Receiver you ever place.
- Dark Fog raids and turret coverage optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Neutron star system.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Mining Machine upgraded to max
- Gas giant fully cleared
- Ready for Neutron star system
Phase 5: Endgame (Neutron star system)
The only place besides a black hole where Unipolar Magnets spawn, and they spawn in small amounts. Those magnets are what make Particle Containers and Plane Smelters possible.
Level/Difficulty: Late game, after interstellar logistics Key Rewards: Unipolar Magnets, extreme luminosity for Ray Receivers
What to Do in Neutron star system
- Neutron star system tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Spray Proliferator on matrix inputs before anything else. Choosing extra products on research cubes returns 25 percent more of the single most expensive item chain in the game, which beats spraying raw ore by a wide margin.
- The endgame loop: run Neutron star system, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Power generation for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.

Common Progression Mistakes
- Building tightly packed rows with no spare tiles, then being unable to upgrade to Mk.III belts and assemblers without demolishing everything.
- Ignoring the Hydrogen byproduct from oil refining until the whole red cube line jams and the cause is not obvious.
- Settling a Dyson Swarm around a dim star because it was closest, and getting a fraction of the power per sail that a bright star would have given.
- Leaving the Dark Fog alone until a raid lands, then trying to build turret lines and ammunition supply while buildings are being destroyed.
- Hand-building matrix production instead of blueprinting the first working block, which turns every later expansion into the same hour of manual placement.
