EA released FIFA 22 on 1 October 2021 with Kylian Mbappe on the cover, and it is the penultimate game to carry the FIFA name before FIFA 23 closed the series and EA Sports FC took over. The marketing headline was HyperMotion, machine learning trained on 11v11 motion capture, and PC did not get it: the Windows build shipped on the older engine that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One received. What PC did get was the rewritten goalkeeper system, Explosive Sprint, True Ball Physics and Composed Ball Control. Two things matter before you buy: EA pulled FIFA 22 from Steam in September 2023, and EA retired its online services on 4 November 2024, so Ultimate Team, Division Rivals and Pro Clubs no longer function.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

HyperMotion skipped the PC version

HyperMotion combined machine learning with 11v11 motion capture to generate animations in real time, and EA restricted it to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Stadia. The Windows version shipped with the same animation set as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which caused a well-documented backlash because PC hardware was obviously capable of running it. If you are reading comparisons written about console FIFA 22, the animation and physicality differences described there do not apply to the copy you are playing.

Goalkeeper rewrite

EA rebuilt the goalkeeper system from scratch for FIFA 22 and this change did ship on every platform including PC. Keepers make smarter decisions about when to come off the line, position better for shots from angles, and stop the low-driven shots that were near-automatic goals in FIFA 21. The practical effect is that finishing changed: near-post power shots stopped being reliable and finesse shots from the edge of the box became the higher percentage option.

Explosive Sprint

A new acceleration mechanic that separates the first few steps from top speed. Holding the sprint trigger no longer gives you everything immediately, so you can dribble at a defender at controlled pace and then release the burst at the moment you choose. It works both ways: defenders use the same burst to recover, which is why blindly holding sprint while defending leaves you turned inside out.

The pre-rebrand chemistry system

FIFA 22 uses the old Ultimate Team chemistry rules, not the reworked version EA introduced with FC 24. Individual player chemistry runs to 10 and team chemistry to 100, positional placement modifies it, links between players depend on shared club, league and nationality, loyalty adds 1 to a player who has played 10 matches for you or came from a pack you opened, and the manager contributes through league and nationality matches. Any chemistry guide written for FC 24 or FC 25 is describing a different system entirely.

Online services retired

EA retired FIFA 22 online services and features on 4 November 2024, and pulled the game from Steam in September 2023. That takes out Ultimate Team completely, along with Division Rivals, FUT Champions, Pro Clubs, Volta online and online seasons. What still works is everything offline: Manager Career including Create a Club, Player Career, Kick Off, Skill Games and the offline Volta content. Buy or install it with that in mind.

Equipment Guide

EquipmentWhy It MattersBest For
Skilled BridgeOne of the four skill moves added in FIFA 22 and available to any player with a four-star skill rating.Beating a defender who has already committed to a tackle in a one-on-one
Four-Touch TurnAlso new in FIFA 22 and also four-star.Turning out of pressure in midfield when a defender is tight behind you
Scoop Turn FakeThe third four-star addition.Punishing aggressive defenders who lunge at the first sign of a turn
First-Time SpinThe five-star skill move introduced in FIFA 22, so only players with the full skill rating can perform it.Receiving with your back to goal on a five-star skiller and turning immediately
Drag BackA two-star move available to almost the entire game, and the most reliable skill in FIFA 22 because it needs no special player.Escaping a tackle with any player, including centre backs and defensive midfielders

Skilled Bridge: One of the four skill moves added in FIFA 22 and available to any player with a four-star skill rating. It knocks the ball past a defender on one side while the player goes the other, which beats a committed slide tackle cleanly.

Four-Touch Turn: Also new in FIFA 22 and also four-star. Four quick touches turn the player through a tight arc without losing much ground, which is the tool for escaping pressure with your back to goal rather than for beating a man in space.

Scoop Turn Fake: The third four-star addition. It sells a scoop turn and then abandons it, which drags a defender's momentum one way while the ball goes the other. It works best against opponents who react to your first touch rather than waiting.

First-Time Spin: The five-star skill move introduced in FIFA 22, so only players with the full skill rating can perform it. It applies a spin on the first touch as the ball arrives, which lets you receive and turn in one motion instead of two.

Drag Back: A two-star move available to almost the entire game, and the most reliable skill in FIFA 22 because it needs no special player. It pulls the ball backward out of a tackle and buys the half second the rewritten defending AI does not give you for free.

Location Progression

LocationLevel RangeKey Rewards
Create a Club in Manager CareerFully playable offline, unaffected by the server shutdownCustom club, custom kits and crest, stadium and atmosphere editing
Player CareerFully playable offlinePlayer growth progression, match objectives, transfer storylines
FUT 22Offline since 4 November 2024None currently, the mode cannot be accessed
VOLTA FOOTBALLOffline content playable, online squads unavailableSignature Abilities, Skill Meter progression, offline Volta stories
Kick Off and Skill GamesFully playable offline including local multiplayerSkill Game medals, local multiplayer, practice against the new goalkeeper AI

Create a Club in Manager Career: FIFA 22's biggest offline addition. You name a club, choose the nickname the commentary team will use, pick an existing club to replace in the league of your choice, then edit crest, kits, stadium and crowd atmosphere. It is fully offline, so it still works exactly as it did at launch.

Player Career: Reworked in FIFA 22 around match objectives and a player growth system, with cutscenes covering transfers and manager conversations. Like Manager Career it runs entirely offline, so it is one of the two modes worth installing the game for today.

FUT 22: The card collecting mode, built on the pre-rebrand chemistry rules with player chemistry to 10 and team chemistry to 100. FUT Heroes were the new card type, and Division Rivals ran from Division 10 up to the Elite Division. None of it is reachable now: EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024 and the entire mode requires a server connection.

VOLTA FOOTBALL: The small-sided street mode, updated in FIFA 22 with a Skill Meter and Signature Abilities. Volta's online components went down with the rest of the online services, but the single player content still loads, which makes it the most complete non-career mode still standing.

Kick Off and Skill Games: The unglamorous pair that outlived everything else. Kick Off gives you every licensed team in the game for local matches, and Skill Games remain the fastest way to actually learn the four new skill moves and the changed shooting model against the rewritten keepers.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Check what you are buying before you install. EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024 and delisted the game from Steam in September 2023, so Ultimate Team, Division Rivals, FUT Champions, Pro Clubs and online seasons are all gone.
  2. Ignore console gameplay comparisons. HyperMotion shipped only on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and Stadia. The PC build uses the older animation system, so the physicality and animation differences reviewers described do not exist in your copy.
  3. Change how you shoot. The goalkeeper rewrite landed on every platform including PC, and near-post power shots that worked in FIFA 21 are saved routinely. Finesse shots from the edge of the box are the higher percentage option now.
  4. Hold Explosive Sprint back rather than spending it early. The mechanic separates initial acceleration from top speed, so approaching a full back at controlled pace and then bursting past him beats sprinting at him from thirty yards out.
  5. Do not hold sprint while defending. Defenders get the same acceleration burst, but holding it removes your ability to change direction, and any attacker with a Drag Back will turn you.
  6. Learn Drag Back before the flashy moves. It is a two-star skill available to nearly every player in the game, including centre backs, and it escapes more tackles than the five-star First-Time Spin ever will.
  7. The four new skill moves are Skilled Bridge, Four-Touch Turn and Scoop Turn Fake at four stars, and First-Time Spin at five. Check your player's skill rating before practising a move he cannot perform.
  8. Use Skill Games as a practice range. They cost nothing, they load quickly, and they are the only place to drill finishing against the new keeper AI without losing a match to it.
  9. Create a Club is the strongest reason to install FIFA 22 in 2026. It lets you replace an existing club in any league and edit the crest, kits, stadium and atmosphere, and it is entirely offline.
  10. If you want the chemistry system you have read about in newer guides, this is the wrong game. FIFA 22 uses the pre-rebrand rules with 10 player chemistry, 100 team chemistry, club and league and nationality links and a loyalty bonus, none of which survived into FC 24.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying FIFA 22 for Ultimate Team. FUT is entirely server-dependent and EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024, so the mode cannot be opened at all regardless of your connection.
  • Expecting HyperMotion on PC. It was never in the Windows build. The PC version shipped on the same engine as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and no patch ever changed that.
  • Shooting like it is FIFA 21. The rewritten goalkeepers position better and stop low driven shots that used to be near-automatic, so power shooting from range is now a low percentage decision.
  • Holding sprint permanently. Explosive Sprint gives the initial burst to defenders as well as attackers, but a sprinting defender cannot change direction, which is exactly what a Drag Back or Four-Touch Turn exploits.
  • Applying FC 24 or FC 25 chemistry advice. Those games use the reworked chemistry system introduced after the rebrand, while FIFA 22 still runs positional links, club and league and nationality connections, loyalty and manager bonuses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you still play FIFA 22 in 2026?

Offline, yes. EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024, which took out Ultimate Team, Division Rivals, FUT Champions, Pro Clubs, online seasons and Volta's online squads. Manager Career including Create a Club, Player Career, Kick Off, Skill Games and offline Volta all still work. The game was also delisted from Steam in September 2023, so copies already in a library are the practical route to it.

Does the PC version have HyperMotion?

No. HyperMotion, which used machine learning trained on 11v11 motion capture to generate animations in real time, was limited to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and Stadia. PC shipped with the same animation system as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The goalkeeper rewrite, Explosive Sprint, True Ball Physics and Composed Ball Control did all land on PC.

What are the four new skill moves?

Skilled Bridge, Four-Touch Turn and Scoop Turn Fake all need a four-star skill rating, and First-Time Spin needs the full five stars. Skilled Bridge knocks the ball past a committed defender, Four-Touch Turn escapes pressure in a tight arc, Scoop Turn Fake sells a turn it never completes, and First-Time Spin turns you as the ball arrives rather than after.

Is FIFA 22 the last FIFA game?

No, FIFA 23 followed in 2022 and was the last title to carry the FIFA name before EA Sports FC 24 arrived in September 2023. FIFA 22 is the penultimate one. It is still a meaningful marker because it is the last FIFA released while the next-generation console split was at its widest, with HyperMotion on new consoles only and PC left on the older build.

How does chemistry work in FIFA 22?

On the pre-rebrand rules. Individual player chemistry runs to 10 and team chemistry to 100. Playing a card out of position reduces it, links between players are built on shared club, league and nationality, loyalty adds 1 once a player has ten appearances for you or came from a pack you opened yourself, and the manager contributes through matching league and nationality. FC 24 replaced all of that, so newer guides do not apply here.
