EA released FIFA 22 on 1 October 2021 with Kylian Mbappe on the cover, and it is the penultimate game to carry the FIFA name before FIFA 23 closed the series and EA Sports FC took over. The marketing headline was HyperMotion, machine learning trained on 11v11 motion capture, and PC did not get it: the Windows build shipped on the older engine that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One received. What PC did get was the rewritten goalkeeper system, Explosive Sprint, True Ball Physics and Composed Ball Control. Two things matter before you buy: EA pulled FIFA 22 from Steam in September 2023, and EA retired its online services on 4 November 2024, so Ultimate Team, Division Rivals and Pro Clubs no longer function.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Create a Club in Manager Career)

FIFA 22's biggest offline addition. You name a club, choose the nickname the commentary team will use, pick an existing club to replace in the league of your choice, then edit crest, kits, stadium and crowd atmosphere. It is fully offline, so it still works exactly as it did at launch.

Level/Difficulty: Fully playable offline, unaffected by the server shutdown Key Rewards: Custom club, custom kits and crest, stadium and atmosphere editing

What to Do in Create a Club in Manager Career

  1. Learn HyperMotion skipped the PC version. HyperMotion combined machine learning with 11v11 motion capture to generate animations in real time, and EA restricted it to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Stadia. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Stay Back defensive midfielder as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Check what you are buying before you install. EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024 and delisted the game from Steam in September 2023, so Ultimate Team, Division Rivals, FUT Champions, Pro Clubs and online seasons are all gone.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Four-Touch Turn or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand HyperMotion skipped the PC version fundamentals
  • Stay Back defensive midfielder selected and functional
  • Create a Club in Manager Career main content cleared
  • Ready for Player Career

Phase 2: Early Game (Player Career)

Reworked in FIFA 22 around match objectives and a player growth system, with cutscenes covering transfers and manager conversations. Like Manager Career it runs entirely offline, so it is one of the two modes worth installing the game for today.

Level/Difficulty: Fully playable offline Key Rewards: Player growth progression, match objectives, transfer storylines

What to Do in Player Career

  1. Work on Goalkeeper rewrite. EA rebuilt the goalkeeper system from scratch for FIFA 22 and this change did ship on every platform including PC. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Four-Touch Turn if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Ignore console gameplay comparisons. HyperMotion shipped only on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and Stadia. The PC build uses the older animation system, so the physicality and animation differences reviewers described do not exist in your copy.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to FUT 22.
  5. Consider whether Cut Inside winger might suit your playstyle better than Stay Back defensive midfielder.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Goalkeeper rewrite integrated into gameplay
  • Four-Touch Turn acquired
  • Player Career fully cleared
  • Ready for FUT 22

Phase 3: Mid Game (FUT 22)

The card collecting mode, built on the pre-rebrand chemistry rules with player chemistry to 10 and team chemistry to 100. FUT Heroes were the new card type, and Division Rivals ran from Division 10 up to the Elite Division. None of it is reachable now: EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024 and the entire mode requires a server connection.

Level/Difficulty: Offline since 4 November 2024 Key Rewards: None currently, the mode cannot be accessed

What to Do in FUT 22

  1. Master Explosive Sprint. A new acceleration mechanic that separates the first few steps from top speed. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Skilled Bridge. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Change how you shoot. The goalkeeper rewrite landed on every platform including PC, and near-post power shots that worked in FIFA 21 are saved routinely. Finesse shots from the edge of the box are the higher percentage option now.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in The pre-rebrand chemistry system for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Explosive Sprint mastered
  • Skilled Bridge acquired or in progress
  • FUT 22 fully cleared
  • Ready for VOLTA FOOTBALL

Phase 4: Late Game (VOLTA FOOTBALL)

The small-sided street mode, updated in FIFA 22 with a Skill Meter and Signature Abilities. Volta's online components went down with the rest of the online services, but the single player content still loads, which makes it the most complete non-career mode still standing.

Level/Difficulty: Offline content playable, online squads unavailable Key Rewards: Signature Abilities, Skill Meter progression, offline Volta stories

What to Do in VOLTA FOOTBALL

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Cut Inside winger or Stay Back defensive midfielder with optimized gear.
  2. Skilled Bridge should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Hold Explosive Sprint back rather than spending it early. The mechanic separates initial acceleration from top speed, so approaching a full back at controlled pace and then bursting past him beats sprinting at him from thirty yards out.
  4. Online services retired optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Kick Off and Skill Games.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Skilled Bridge upgraded to max
  • VOLTA FOOTBALL fully cleared
  • Ready for Kick Off and Skill Games

Phase 5: Endgame (Kick Off and Skill Games)

The unglamorous pair that outlived everything else. Kick Off gives you every licensed team in the game for local matches, and Skill Games remain the fastest way to actually learn the four new skill moves and the changed shooting model against the rewritten keepers.

Level/Difficulty: Fully playable offline including local multiplayer Key Rewards: Skill Game medals, local multiplayer, practice against the new goalkeeper AI

What to Do in Kick Off and Skill Games

  1. Kick Off and Skill Games tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Do not hold sprint while defending. Defenders get the same acceleration burst, but holding it removes your ability to change direction, and any attacker with a Drag Back will turn you.
  3. The endgame loop: run Kick Off and Skill Games, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Overlap full back for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Online services retired mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Kick Off and Skill Games fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Buying FIFA 22 for Ultimate Team. FUT is entirely server-dependent and EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024, so the mode cannot be opened at all regardless of your connection.
  • Expecting HyperMotion on PC. It was never in the Windows build. The PC version shipped on the same engine as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and no patch ever changed that.
  • Shooting like it is FIFA 21. The rewritten goalkeepers position better and stop low driven shots that used to be near-automatic, so power shooting from range is now a low percentage decision.
  • Holding sprint permanently. Explosive Sprint gives the initial burst to defenders as well as attackers, but a sprinting defender cannot change direction, which is exactly what a Drag Back or Four-Touch Turn exploits.
  • Applying FC 24 or FC 25 chemistry advice. Those games use the reworked chemistry system introduced after the rebrand, while FIFA 22 still runs positional links, club and league and nationality connections, loyalty and manager bonuses.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Check what you are buying before you install. EA retired FIFA 22 online services on 4 November 2024 and delisted the game from Steam in September 2023, so Ultimate Team, Division Rivals, FUT Champions, Pro Clubs and online seasons are all gone.
  2. Ignore console gameplay comparisons. HyperMotion shipped only on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and Stadia. The PC build uses the older animation system, so the physicality and animation differences reviewers described do not exist in your copy.
  3. Change how you shoot. The goalkeeper rewrite landed on every platform including PC, and near-post power shots that worked in FIFA 21 are saved routinely. Finesse shots from the edge of the box are the higher percentage option now.
  4. Hold Explosive Sprint back rather than spending it early. The mechanic separates initial acceleration from top speed, so approaching a full back at controlled pace and then bursting past him beats sprinting at him from thirty yards out.
  5. Do not hold sprint while defending. Defenders get the same acceleration burst, but holding it removes your ability to change direction, and any attacker with a Drag Back will turn you.
