Football Manager 2022 shipped on 9 November 2021, and its headline addition was the Data Hub, a dedicated analysis section holding match momentum, pass maps, zone maps, shot maps and xG timelines. Sports Interactive also added the Wide Centre-Back role for three-at-the-back shapes, rebuilt transfer deadline day, and introduced a weekly Staff Meeting covering Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning. This is also the edition where Manchester United became Manchester UFC in the database, after SEGA settled a long-running trademark dispute with the club.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

Data Hub

A sidebar section built for FM22 that gathers match momentum, pass maps, zone maps, shot maps and xG timelines in one place. The Ask For request sends your analysts off to produce a specific graph instead of making you hunt through screens for it.

Scout Assignments

FM22 recruitment runs on assignments. You point a scout at a player, a position, a region or a competition and set a duration. FM23 later replaced this with filter-driven Recruitment Focus, so scouting advice written for FM23 does not transfer back to this edition.

Weekly Staff Meeting

Runs alongside the Recruitment Meeting that FM21 introduced, and covers Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning. Your backroom staff raise problems here weeks before the league table makes them obvious.

Deadline Day

Rebuilt so the closing hours of the window actually move. Agents push late proposals at you, loan business surfaces at the last minute, and the minute-by-minute pacing is far closer to a real deadline day than FM21 managed.

Stamina-aware pressing

FM22 changed how players decide to close down, weighing stamina and sprint capacity into that decision. That single change is why a copied gegenpress stopped being a default answer in this edition and started needing a squad built for it.

Equipment Guide

EquipmentWhy It MattersBest For
Work Ball Into BoxTells the side to refuse low percentage shots and keep circulating until a chance opens inside the area.Possession sides with patient forwards, and any team whose shot map is full of efforts from 25 yards
Overlap LeftAsks the left-sided attacker to hold the ball and invite the full-back or wing-back past him on the outside. An attacking wing-back paired with an Inside Forward who drifts infield
Prevent Short GK DistributionPushes your forwards onto the opposition centre-backs at goal kicks so the keeper has to go long.High pressing sides facing an opponent with a weak passing keeper
Higher Defensive LineSqueezes the pitch by pushing the back line up, shortening the distance your midfield has to cover to press.Quick centre-backs and a keeper with decent Rushing Out, usually paired with a high Line of Engagement
Be More ExpressiveLoosens the leash so players make their own decisions rather than following the tactical script.Technically gifted squads against deep blocks, where the scripted option is always covered

Work Ball Into Box: Tells the side to refuse low percentage shots and keep circulating until a chance opens inside the area. It lowers shot volume and raises average shot quality, which shows up directly on the Data Hub xG timeline.

Overlap Left: Asks the left-sided attacker to hold the ball and invite the full-back or wing-back past him on the outside. It only works if the player behind has the Stamina and Crossing to justify the run.

Prevent Short GK Distribution: Pushes your forwards onto the opposition centre-backs at goal kicks so the keeper has to go long. In FM22 this interacts directly with the rewritten pressing logic and burns stamina faster than managers expect.

Higher Defensive Line: Squeezes the pitch by pushing the back line up, shortening the distance your midfield has to cover to press. It also exposes anything slow in central defence to balls played in behind.

Be More Expressive: Loosens the leash so players make their own decisions rather than following the tactical script. Excellent with high Flair and Decisions, damaging with a squad that lacks either.

Location Progression

LocationLevel RangeKey Rewards
UEFA Europa Conference LeagueMid-table top-flight and strong second-tier league clubsEuropean prize money and reputation for clubs too small for the Europa League
Serie ATop tier ItalyDeep tactical opposition, strong bargain market in over-30 free agents
Ligue 1 Uber EatsTop tier FranceCheap high-potential youth, resale profit as the core save mechanic
Sky Bet ChampionshipSecond tier EnglandPromotion play-off money, a wage budget that punishes bad contracts
Vanarama National LeagueFifth tier England and belowFull pyramid climb, free agents and trialists as your only transfer market

UEFA Europa Conference League: The third UEFA club competition began in real life in the 2021/22 season, which is FM22's first season, so this is the earliest Football Manager where you can win it. Branding is generic in this edition; official UEFA presentation arrived in FM23.

Serie A: Italy's top flight, modelled with the country's foreign player registration rules, so a squad assembled the way you would assemble one in England runs into paperwork limits. Wage structures are tighter than the Premier League and free transfers carry more weight.

Ligue 1 Uber Eats: Carried its sponsor name through the FM22 period. The league's real strength is the volume of teenage talent in its academies, so the Data Hub and your scout assignments earn their keep faster here than almost anywhere else.

Sky Bet Championship: England's second tier and the most brutal fixture calendar in the game, with 46 league matches plus cups. Squad depth and rotation matter more than any tactic you pick.

Vanarama National League: The fifth tier, carrying its real sponsor name in the FM22 period, with the regional divisions below it forming the lowest playable English level. Part-time contracts, tiny scouting range and no youth budget make this the hardest honest start in the game.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Open the Data Hub after every match and look at the xG timeline before the scoreline. A 2-0 win where you were out-created by 1.8 expected goals is a warning, and FM22 gives you six weeks of those warnings before the results turn.
  2. Set scout assignments by position and competition rather than by named player. An assignment aimed at right-backs in the Eredivisie for six months returns more usable options than manually filtering a global search you have to repeat every month.
  3. The Wide Centre-Back only functions with a wing-back ahead of him who can hold width or tuck inside. Give that flank a defensive full-back and the Wide Centre-Back runs into his own teammate for the whole season.
  4. FM22 pressing accounts for stamina and sprint capacity, so check Work Rate, Stamina and Natural Fitness across your front five before setting a high Trigger Press. A squad averaging under 13 in those cannot sustain it past 60 minutes.
  5. Attend the weekly Staff Meeting rather than delegating it. Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning items surface there, and the development flags in particular catch stalled youngsters months before the training report does.
  6. On deadline day, hold your asking price on players the AI has already bid for twice. The rebuilt window pushes AI clubs into late panic buys, and the last three hours regularly produce the best sale of your season.
  7. Zone maps in the Data Hub are the quickest way to diagnose a broken flank. If one wide zone shows almost no touches over five matches, the instruction set and the player attributes on that side are contradicting each other.
  8. Individual training set to a player's match role is what drives role familiarity and attribute growth. Leaving it on the default is the single most common invisible mistake across a FM22 season.
  9. Prevent Short GK Distribution combined with a high Line of Engagement drains stamina quickly. Use it against opponents with poor passing keepers and turn it off in fixture congestion weeks, or your bench decides the run-in for you.
  10. Manchester United appear as Manchester UFC in the FM22 database following the SEGA settlement, and third-party name fix files exist for this. If you use one, apply it before starting the save, because the club naming is baked in at save creation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Judging a tactic on results for six weeks while ignoring the xG timeline that already showed the problem.
  • Copying a FM23 scouting workflow into FM22, where Recruitment Focus does not exist and assignments do.
  • Fielding a Wide Centre-Back behind a conservative full-back, so both players occupy the same space.
  • Setting a high press with a squad that lacks the Stamina and Work Rate the FM22 engine now checks.
  • Leaving individual training on defaults for a full season and wondering why role familiarity never moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is new in FM22 compared with FM21?

The Data Hub, the Wide Centre-Back role, a weekly Staff Meeting covering Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning, a rebuilt transfer deadline day, a new animation engine that removed foot sliding, and rewritten pressing logic that weighs stamina and sprint capacity. The manager creator and Fantasy Draft were also revised.

Why is Manchester United called Manchester UFC in FM22?

Manchester United sued SEGA and Sports Interactive in 2020 over use of the club name. The parties settled in late 2021 on a no admissions basis, and from FM22 onward the club appears in the database as Manchester UFC rather than Manchester United.

Is the Data Hub actually useful or is it decoration?

It is the most useful screen added in years. Match momentum, pass maps, zone maps, shot maps and xG timelines all live there, and the Ask For system has your analysts generate a specific graph. Managers who read the xG timeline weekly catch a failing tactic roughly a month earlier than managers who read the table.

Can I still play FM22 Touch on PC?

No. FM22 Touch was made a Nintendo Switch exclusive and was discontinued on Steam, the Epic Games Store, the App Store and Google Play. The full FM22 remains the only PC version of this edition.

Does the gegenpress still work in FM22?

It works, but not as a copy-paste answer. FM22 rewrote how players decide to close down so that stamina and sprint capacity feed into it. A high press with a squad short on Stamina, Work Rate and Natural Fitness collapses in the last half hour of matches.
