Football Manager 2022 shipped on 9 November 2021, and its headline addition was the Data Hub, a dedicated analysis section holding match momentum, pass maps, zone maps, shot maps and xG timelines. Sports Interactive also added the Wide Centre-Back role for three-at-the-back shapes, rebuilt transfer deadline day, and introduced a weekly Staff Meeting covering Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning. This is also the edition where Manchester United became Manchester UFC in the database, after SEGA settled a long-running trademark dispute with the club.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (UEFA Europa Conference League)
The third UEFA club competition began in real life in the 2021/22 season, which is FM22's first season, so this is the earliest Football Manager where you can win it. Branding is generic in this edition; official UEFA presentation arrived in FM23.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-table top-flight and strong second-tier league clubs Key Rewards: European prize money and reputation for clubs too small for the Europa League
What to Do in UEFA Europa Conference League
- Learn Data Hub. A sidebar section built for FM22 that gathers match momentum, pass maps, zone maps, shot maps and xG timelines in one place. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Complete Wing-Back as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
- Open the Data Hub after every match and look at the xG timeline before the scoreline. A 2-0 win where you were out-created by 1.8 expected goals is a warning, and FM22 gives you six weeks of those warnings before the results turn.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Overlap Left or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Data Hub fundamentals
- Complete Wing-Back selected and functional
- UEFA Europa Conference League main content cleared
- Ready for Serie A
Phase 2: Early Game (Serie A)
Italy's top flight, modelled with the country's foreign player registration rules, so a squad assembled the way you would assemble one in England runs into paperwork limits. Wage structures are tighter than the Premier League and free transfers carry more weight.
Level/Difficulty: Top tier Italy Key Rewards: Deep tactical opposition, strong bargain market in over-30 free agents
What to Do in Serie A
- Work on Scout Assignments. FM22 recruitment runs on assignments. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Overlap Left if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Set scout assignments by position and competition rather than by named player. An assignment aimed at right-backs in the Eredivisie for six months returns more usable options than manually filtering a global search you have to repeat every month.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Ligue 1 Uber Eats.
- Consider whether Wide Centre-Back might suit your playstyle better than Complete Wing-Back.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Scout Assignments integrated into gameplay
- Overlap Left acquired
- Serie A fully cleared
- Ready for Ligue 1 Uber Eats
Phase 3: Mid Game (Ligue 1 Uber Eats)
Carried its sponsor name through the FM22 period. The league's real strength is the volume of teenage talent in its academies, so the Data Hub and your scout assignments earn their keep faster here than almost anywhere else.
Level/Difficulty: Top tier France Key Rewards: Cheap high-potential youth, resale profit as the core save mechanic
What to Do in Ligue 1 Uber Eats
- Master Weekly Staff Meeting. Runs alongside the Recruitment Meeting that FM21 introduced, and covers Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Work Ball Into Box. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- The Wide Centre-Back only functions with a wing-back ahead of him who can hold width or tuck inside. Give that flank a defensive full-back and the Wide Centre-Back runs into his own teammate for the whole season.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Deadline Day for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Weekly Staff Meeting mastered
- Work Ball Into Box acquired or in progress
- Ligue 1 Uber Eats fully cleared
- Ready for Sky Bet Championship
Phase 4: Late Game (Sky Bet Championship)
England's second tier and the most brutal fixture calendar in the game, with 46 league matches plus cups. Squad depth and rotation matter more than any tactic you pick.
Level/Difficulty: Second tier England Key Rewards: Promotion play-off money, a wage budget that punishes bad contracts
What to Do in Sky Bet Championship
- Finalize your build. You should be running Wide Centre-Back or Complete Wing-Back with optimized gear.
- Work Ball Into Box should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- FM22 pressing accounts for stamina and sprint capacity, so check Work Rate, Stamina and Natural Fitness across your front five before setting a high Trigger Press. A squad averaging under 13 in those cannot sustain it past 60 minutes.
- Stamina-aware pressing optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Vanarama National League.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Work Ball Into Box upgraded to max
- Sky Bet Championship fully cleared
- Ready for Vanarama National League
Phase 5: Endgame (Vanarama National League)
The fifth tier, carrying its real sponsor name in the FM22 period, with the regional divisions below it forming the lowest playable English level. Part-time contracts, tiny scouting range and no youth budget make this the hardest honest start in the game.
Level/Difficulty: Fifth tier England and below Key Rewards: Full pyramid climb, free agents and trialists as your only transfer market
What to Do in Vanarama National League
- Vanarama National League tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Attend the weekly Staff Meeting rather than delegating it. Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning items surface there, and the development flags in particular catch stalled youngsters months before the training report does.
- The endgame loop: run Vanarama National League, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Advanced Forward for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Stamina-aware pressing mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Vanarama National League fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Judging a tactic on results for six weeks while ignoring the xG timeline that already showed the problem
- Copying a FM23 scouting workflow into FM22, where Recruitment Focus does not exist and assignments do
- Fielding a Wide Centre-Back behind a conservative full-back, so both players occupy the same space
- Setting a high press with a squad that lacks the Stamina and Work Rate the FM22 engine now checks
- Leaving individual training on defaults for a full season and wondering why role familiarity never moves
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
