Football Manager 2022 shipped on 9 November 2021, and its headline addition was the Data Hub, a dedicated analysis section holding match momentum, pass maps, zone maps, shot maps and xG timelines. Sports Interactive also added the Wide Centre-Back role for three-at-the-back shapes, rebuilt transfer deadline day, and introduced a weekly Staff Meeting covering Coaching, Development, Staffing and Squad Planning. This is also the edition where Manchester United became Manchester UFC in the database, after SEGA settled a long-running trademark dispute with the club.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work Ball Into Box | S | Possession sides with patient forwards, and any team whose shot map is full of efforts from 25 yards | Tells the side to refuse low percentage shots and keep circulating until a chance opens inside the area. |
| Overlap Left | A | An attacking wing-back paired with an Inside Forward who drifts infield | Asks the left-sided attacker to hold the ball and invite the full-back or wing-back past him on the outside. |
| Prevent Short GK Distribution | A | High pressing sides facing an opponent with a weak passing keeper | Pushes your forwards onto the opposition centre-backs at goal kicks so the keeper has to go long. |
| Higher Defensive Line | B | Quick centre-backs and a keeper with decent Rushing Out, usually paired with a high Line of Engagement | Squeezes the pitch by pushing the back line up, shortening the distance your midfield has to cover to press. |
| Be More Expressive | B | Technically gifted squads against deep blocks, where the scripted option is always covered | Loosens the leash so players make their own decisions rather than following the tactical script. |
S-Tier: Work Ball Into Box
Tells the side to refuse low percentage shots and keep circulating until a chance opens inside the area. It lowers shot volume and raises average shot quality, which shows up directly on the Data Hub xG timeline.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear UEFA Europa Conference League
- Overlap Left → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Prevent Short GK Distribution → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Work Ball Into Box → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Open the Data Hub after every match and look at the xG timeline before the scoreline. A 2-0 win where you were out-created by 1.8 expected goals is a warning, and FM22 gives you six weeks of those warnings before the results turn.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
