The Master Chief Collection bundles six games into one launcher: Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4. That is 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps, with 4K support, mouse and keyboard controls, ultrawide resolutions and an adjustable field of view since the PC release on 3 December 2019. Progression, customisation and matchmaking are shared across all six titles.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best characters, weapons worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Recharging shields over health
Your Spartan carries an energy shield that refills a few seconds after you stop taking fire. Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo: Reach also hide health packs around their levels, and Halo 3: ODST swaps the shield for a stamina bar because you play as a regular trooper.
Two weapon carry limit
You hold two weapons and swap constantly, which is why the sandbox is designed around pairing a precision weapon with something that strips shields. Plasma weapons drop shields quickly, kinetic weapons finish what is underneath.
Grenades, precision fire and melee
Grenades soften, precision weapons land headshots, melee closes. Veterans call this the golden triangle, and the standard pattern is a plasma grenade stick, two Battle Rifle bursts, then a melee hit.
Skulls and Legendary difficulty
Skulls are collectible modifiers hidden inside campaign levels that raise difficulty or change scoring. Running every skull on Legendary is the LASO challenge and the collection tracks it with its own achievements.
Season points and shared customisation
Playing any of the six games earns season points, and those points spend from a single customisation menu covering armour, visors, emblems and nameplates. You do not have to play Halo: Reach to earn Reach armour.

Weapons Guide
| Weapon | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Rifle | The BR55 fires three round bursts through a 2x scope. | Mid range team shooting across the Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 map pools. |
| Energy Sword | A Covenant power weapon with a long lunge and a one hit kill. | Close quarters maps like Lockout, and clearing Elites in campaign. |
| Needler | Fires homing crystal shards that stick and then detonate together in a supercombine once enough land. | Close and mid range fights against targets already committed to a lane. |
| Sniper Rifle | The SRS99 holds four rounds and offers 2x and 10x zoom, killing with one headshot through shields in most titles. | Open maps like Blood Gulch and Valhalla, plus removing Jackal snipers on Legendary. |
| Rocket Launcher | The M41 holds two rockets and kills anything infantry sized outright. | Vehicle denial and holding the ground around power positions. |
Battle Rifle: The BR55 fires three round bursts through a 2x scope. Four bursts kill with the final rounds on the head, which is why it has been the default competitive weapon since Halo 2.
Energy Sword: A Covenant power weapon with a long lunge and a one hit kill. Charge is limited and it leaves you completely helpless past a few metres.
Needler: Fires homing crystal shards that stick and then detonate together in a supercombine once enough land. It tears through shielded infantry and does almost nothing to vehicles.
Sniper Rifle: The SRS99 holds four rounds and offers 2x and 10x zoom, killing with one headshot through shields in most titles. Rounds are scarce, so bodyshots are a waste.
Rocket Launcher: The M41 holds two rockets and kills anything infantry sized outright. Tracking differs between games, with Halo 2's version able to lock onto vehicles where Halo 3's cannot.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Gulch | Large team battles, 8 to 16 players | Sniper Rifle, Rocket Launcher, Overshield, Warthog and tank control |
| Lockout | 4 to 8 players | Energy Sword, Shotgun, Sniper Rifle, control of the top platform |
| The Pit | 8 players, ranked play | Energy Sword, two Sniper Rifles, Rocket Launcher |
| The Silent Cartographer | Campaign mission 3, playable on all four difficulties | Shotgun and Warthog, achievement and collectible hunting on a compact level |
| Lone Wolf | Campaign, Legendary recommended for the achievement set | Campaign completion credit toward the collection's 67 mission total |
Blood Gulch: The Halo: Combat Evolved canyon with two bases, vehicles at each end and a long central sightline. It returned as Coagulation in Halo 2 and again as Bloodline in Halo 2: Anniversary, so the collection carries three versions of the same layout.
Lockout: Halo 2's asymmetric tower map of catwalks and drops, rebuilt as Lockdown in Halo 2: Anniversary. The Energy Sword spawn near the lower level decides a large share of matches played here.
The Pit: Halo 3's symmetrical competitive map and the reference point for ranked Team Slayer and Capture the Flag. Sword room and the two sniper towers are the contested ground.
The Silent Cartographer: The third mission of Halo: Combat Evolved, an island beach assault that opens with a Warthog landing and a Covenant held structure. It is the most replayed level in the series and a short, honest Legendary practice run.
Lone Wolf: The closing mission of Halo: Reach, a last stand on the surface where survival is not the objective and the outcome is fixed no matter how well you play.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Buying the collection gets you all six games, but each title installs separately from the in game menu. A full install with every campaign and both graphics packs runs well past 100 GB, so install only what you plan to play first.
- Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2: Anniversary let you switch between original and remastered visuals live with one key. Classic mode often reads more clearly in a firefight because the remaster adds fog and background clutter.
- Charge the Plasma Pistol, release it on a shielded target, then land one precision headshot. This works in every game in the collection that carries the Plasma Pistol and it is the fastest route through Legendary Elites.
- Legendary rewards cover discipline far more than aim. Enemies throw grenades specifically to flush you out, so keep two exits from every position and never sit still while your shield refills.
- Halo 3: ODST replaces the Spartan shield with a stamina bar and hides health packs, so it plays slower than everything around it. Keep the VISR night vision on, since it outlines enemies in red and pickups in yellow.
- Skulls change scoring as well as difficulty. In Halo 3 the multiplier skulls raise your campaign score, which is the difference between a completion and a scoring achievement.
- Cross game playlists can hand you a Halo 2 map and then a Halo 3 map in the same session. Set sensitivity and keybinds once in the shared settings menu and they carry across all six titles.
- Firefight exists in two forms here: the Halo: Reach version and the Halo 3: ODST version added to the collection later. ODST Firefight has no recharging shield, so ammunition and health packs become the scarce resources.
- Season points accumulate from activity in any of the six games and spend from one shared customisation menu. Play what you enjoy and unlock armour for whichever title you like.
- The PC version has ultrawide support and a field of view slider. Raising FOV to around 100 helps in multiplayer but shrinks distant targets, so re-tune your sensitivity after you change it rather than before.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Installing all six campaigns and both graphics packs first, then wondering where 100 GB of disk space went.
- Holding the trigger down like a modern shooter. Precision weapons in Halo need burst discipline and headshots.
- Dismissing the Plasma Pistol because it feels weak uncharged. Charged, it removes a full shield in one shot.
- Attempting Legendary solo on Halo 2 first. It is the hardest of the six because Jackal snipers hit instantly and there is no separate health bar to absorb the error.
- Camping the sniper spawn without tracking the respawn clock, then losing the weapon to a team that does track it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which games are in The Master Chief Collection?
Six: Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4. Together they hold 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps.
Is Halo 5 included?
No. Halo 5: Guardians is not part of the collection and was never released on PC. Halo Infinite is a separate title with its own free multiplayer.
Do I have to buy all six games at once?
No. The collection is sold as a bundle on Steam and the six titles can also be bought individually, so you can start with one campaign and add the rest later.
Which campaign should I start with?
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for release order, or Halo: Reach for story chronology since Reach is the prequel. Reach also has the gentlest introduction to armour abilities and movement for new players.
Does the old multiplayer still work?
Yes. All six games have working matchmaking through the shared playlists, plus custom games, Theater for saved films, and Forge in every title except Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 3: ODST.
