The Master Chief Collection bundles six games into one launcher: Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4. That is 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps, with 4K support, mouse and keyboard controls, ultrawide resolutions and an adjustable field of view since the PC release on 3 December 2019. Progression, customisation and matchmaking are shared across all six titles.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Blood Gulch: Starting Area

The Halo: Combat Evolved canyon with two bases, vehicles at each end and a long central sightline. It returned as Coagulation in Halo 2 and again as Bloodline in Halo 2: Anniversary, so the collection carries three versions of the same layout.

What to Do Here

Lockout: Early Game

Halo 2's asymmetric tower map of catwalks and drops, rebuilt as Lockdown in Halo 2: Anniversary. The Energy Sword spawn near the lower level decides a large share of matches played here.

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Two weapon carry limit. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Energy Sword if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in The Pit.

The Pit: Mid Game

Halo 3's symmetrical competitive map and the reference point for ranked Team Slayer and Capture the Flag. Sword room and the two sniper towers are the contested ground.

The Silent Cartographer: Late Game

The third mission of Halo: Combat Evolved, an island beach assault that opens with a Warthog landing and a Covenant held structure. It is the most replayed level in the series and a short, honest Legendary practice run.

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Battle Rifle should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Season points and shared customisation mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Lone Wolf.

Lone Wolf: Endgame

The closing mission of Halo: Reach, a last stand on the surface where survival is not the objective and the outcome is fixed no matter how well you play.

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Halo 3: ODST for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Blood Gulch → Lockout → The Pit → The Silent Cartographer → Lone Wolf. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
