The Master Chief Collection bundles six games into one launcher: Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4. That is 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps, with 4K support, mouse and keyboard controls, ultrawide resolutions and an adjustable field of view since the PC release on 3 December 2019. Progression, customisation and matchmaking are shared across all six titles.
Your choice of weapons defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Weapons Rankings
| Weapon | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle Rifle | S | Mid range team shooting across the Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 map pools. | The BR55 fires three round bursts through a 2x scope. |
| Energy Sword | A | Close quarters maps like Lockout, and clearing Elites in campaign. | A Covenant power weapon with a long lunge and a one hit kill. |
| Needler | A | Close and mid range fights against targets already committed to a lane. | Fires homing crystal shards that stick and then detonate together in a supercombine once enough land. |
| Sniper Rifle | B | Open maps like Blood Gulch and Valhalla, plus removing Jackal snipers on Legendary. | The SRS99 holds four rounds and offers 2x and 10x zoom, killing with one headshot through shields in most titles. |
| Rocket Launcher | B | Vehicle denial and holding the ground around power positions. | The M41 holds two rockets and kills anything infantry sized outright. |
S-Tier: Battle Rifle
The BR55 fires three round bursts through a 2x scope. Four bursts kill with the final rounds on the head, which is why it has been the default competitive weapon since Halo 2.

Weapons Progression Path
The order you should acquire weapons as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Blood Gulch
- Energy Sword → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Needler → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Battle Rifle → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Weapons Tips
- Always upgrade your primary weapon before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your weapons to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Buying the collection gets you all six games, but each title installs separately from the in game menu. A full install with every campaign and both graphics packs runs well past 100 GB, so install only what you plan to play first.
- Check our tier list for how weapons rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
