That is 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps, with 4K support, mouse and keyboard controls, ultrawide resolutions and an adjustable field of view since the PC release on 3 December 2019. Progression, customisation and matchmaking are shared across all six titles.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Blood Gulch)

The Halo: Combat Evolved canyon with two bases, vehicles at each end and a long central sightline. It returned as Coagulation in Halo 2 and again as Bloodline in Halo 2: Anniversary, so the collection carries three versions of the same layout.

Level/Difficulty: Large team battles, 8 to 16 players Key Rewards: Sniper Rifle, Rocket Launcher, Overshield, Warthog and tank control

What to Do in Blood Gulch

  1. Learn Recharging shields over health. Your Spartan carries an energy shield that refills a few seconds after you stop taking fire. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Buying the collection gets you all six games, but each title installs separately from the in game menu. A full install with every campaign and both graphics packs runs well past 100 GB, so install only what you plan to play first.
  4. Acquire your first weapons upgrade: Energy Sword or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Recharging shields over health fundamentals
  • Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary selected and functional
  • Blood Gulch main content cleared
  • Ready for Lockout

Phase 2: Early Game (Lockout)

Halo 2's asymmetric tower map of catwalks and drops, rebuilt as Lockdown in Halo 2: Anniversary. The Energy Sword spawn near the lower level decides a large share of matches played here.

Level/Difficulty: 4 to 8 players Key Rewards: Energy Sword, Shotgun, Sniper Rifle, control of the top platform

What to Do in Lockout

  1. Work on Two weapon carry limit. You hold two weapons and swap constantly, which is why the sandbox is designed around pairing a precision weapon with something that strips shields. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Energy Sword if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2: Anniversary let you switch between original and remastered visuals live with one key. Classic mode often reads more clearly in a firefight because the remaster adds fog and background clutter.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to The Pit.
  5. Consider whether Halo: Reach might suit your playstyle better than Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Two weapon carry limit integrated into gameplay
  • Energy Sword acquired
  • Lockout fully cleared
  • Ready for The Pit

Phase 3: Mid Game (The Pit)

Halo 3's symmetrical competitive map and the reference point for ranked Team Slayer and Capture the Flag. Sword room and the two sniper towers are the contested ground.

Level/Difficulty: 8 players, ranked play Key Rewards: Energy Sword, two Sniper Rifles, Rocket Launcher

What to Do in The Pit

  1. Master Grenades, precision fire and melee. Grenades soften, precision weapons land headshots, melee closes. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Battle Rifle. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Charge the Plasma Pistol, release it on a shielded target, then land one precision headshot. This works in every game in the collection that carries the Plasma Pistol and it is the fastest route through Legendary Elites.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Skulls and Legendary difficulty for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Grenades, precision fire and melee mastered
  • Battle Rifle acquired or in progress
  • The Pit fully cleared
  • Ready for The Silent Cartographer

Phase 4: Late Game (The Silent Cartographer)

The third mission of Halo: Combat Evolved, an island beach assault that opens with a Warthog landing and a Covenant held structure. It is the most replayed level in the series and a short, honest Legendary practice run.

Level/Difficulty: Campaign mission 3, playable on all four difficulties Key Rewards: Shotgun and Warthog, achievement and collectible hunting on a compact level

What to Do in The Silent Cartographer

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Halo: Reach or Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary with optimized gear.
  2. Battle Rifle should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Legendary rewards cover discipline far more than aim. Enemies throw grenades specifically to flush you out, so keep two exits from every position and never sit still while your shield refills.
  4. Season points and shared customisation optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Lone Wolf.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Battle Rifle upgraded to max
  • The Silent Cartographer fully cleared
  • Ready for Lone Wolf

Phase 5: Endgame (Lone Wolf)

The closing mission of Halo: Reach, a last stand on the surface where survival is not the objective and the outcome is fixed no matter how well you play.

Level/Difficulty: Campaign, Legendary recommended for the achievement set Key Rewards: Campaign completion credit toward the collection's 67 mission total

What to Do in Lone Wolf

  1. Lone Wolf tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Halo 3: ODST replaces the Spartan shield with a stamina bar and hides health packs, so it plays slower than everything around it. Keep the VISR night vision on, since it outlines enemies in red and pickups in yellow.
  3. The endgame loop: run Lone Wolf, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Halo 3: ODST for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Season points and shared customisation mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Lone Wolf fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Installing all six campaigns and both graphics packs first, then wondering where 100 GB of disk space went.
  • Holding the trigger down like a modern shooter. Precision weapons in Halo need burst discipline and headshots.
  • Dismissing the Plasma Pistol because it feels weak uncharged. Charged, it removes a full shield in one shot.
  • Attempting Legendary solo on Halo 2 first. It is the hardest of the six because Jackal snipers hit instantly and there is no separate health bar to absorb the error.
  • Camping the sniper spawn without tracking the respawn clock, then losing the weapon to a team that does track it.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Buying the collection gets you all six games, but each title installs separately from the in game menu. A full install with every campaign and both graphics packs runs well past 100 GB, so install only what you plan to play first.
  2. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2: Anniversary let you switch between original and remastered visuals live with one key. Classic mode often reads more clearly in a firefight because the remaster adds fog and background clutter.
  3. Charge the Plasma Pistol, release it on a shielded target, then land one precision headshot. This works in every game in the collection that carries the Plasma Pistol and it is the fastest route through Legendary Elites.
  4. Legendary rewards cover discipline far more than aim. Enemies throw grenades specifically to flush you out, so keep two exits from every position and never sit still while your shield refills.
  5. Halo 3: ODST replaces the Spartan shield with a stamina bar and hides health packs, so it plays slower than everything around it. Keep the VISR night vision on, since it outlines enemies in red and pickups in yellow.
